Well, the soul we receive from Velstadt is conspicuously corrupted with Dark. Of course, whether that's because of Nashandra's meddling or simply because he was exposed to the Dark of the Undead Crypt is subject to debate.

What's clear is that Velstadt became subsumed by the Dark at some point over the course of his watching over Vendrick. I don't think he's in league with Nashandra/Elana, per se, but I do think it makes him subject to their manipulations from time to time (i.e. Elana is able to summon him).

You know i have been thinking recently.

In Dark Souls 1 the bonfires are fueled by Humanity, which is basicly the energy of the Abyss (Dark). The more humanity you spend on it. The stronger the bonefires become.

The bonfires are linked to the first flame. Which means the first flame is fueled by Dark/Humanity.

Now, if you look back at the intro of Dark Souls you see that after the first flame was lit, undead are awaking to approach it and touch the first flame. These undead are infact the human gods we see afterwards (Gwyn, Nito, the Witch), aswell as the Furtive Pygme who is the father of the normal humans.
Judging by some elements like the goddess of sin being feared even by the human gods, further indicates that there were gods before the first flame, most likely born from nature spirits and dragons.

So being undead is not a curse that befell humanity recently. It's a natural state for all human beings, which includes the gods, the great humans (Artorias, black knights and co.) and the small humans (the normal ones like the PCs).

However to lift the state of being undead one has to burn some humanity (energy of dark) on a bonfire. This is likely what happend when the gods touched the first flame. Their humanity which they naturaly absorbed was burned away turning them into living beings.

So it seems humanity/dark was part of the overall nature of the world before the first flame. So it's entirely possible that the Dragons themself fed on humanity from the Abyss.

Perhaps that's actualy why they were challenged by the gods. The gods needed the first flame to be human, but with the first flame burning away humanity from the Abyss, the dragons were robbed of their natural energy source. So they fought the gods.

Now that the first flame also became weaker the Abyss was finaly able to reach back into the world and as you pointed out. A dragon appeared to feed on it.

This makes no sense. Why would they become living beings with the humanity burned away? It seems the OPPOSITE is true. When you have humanity in you you take on the human form.

I subscribe to the "Gwyn made it" theory. As a means to get humans to nuke themselves like he did in order to prolong the age of fire indefinitely.

As long as people are cursed, they'll seek humanity, burn it at bonfires, absorb it, whatever. This is a way of keeping the dark at bay. If only a little. Until a powerful enough undead can sacrifice himself in a blaze of glory to keep the dark at bay. Once that happens, there's no need for undead and the curse is TEMPORARILY lifted.

Also "humanity" in Dark Souls is indicated to be something dark and terrible, it deforms humans and turns them into monsters, destroys the mind and destroys the soul of a living being.

Also you are in fact using up humanity, not absorbing it, to remove being hollow. The humanity counter indicates how much humanity your character has in him. If you turn him from hollow into living, one point of humanity is gone. Forever.

So you are infact burning up a point of humanity to become living. You are not absorbing it.
