Dune, if it wasn't fuck-tarded.

Alternatively, The Teachings of Don Juan for something truly refreshing.

Dune's perfect for this since we see so little of the world outside of Arrakis, it would be good as a kind of expanded universe thing.

best settings are usually found in manga because their storytelling often hangs upon exposition which is in turn achieved through detailed explanation of world/item mechanics.

tsutomu nihei's work and shingeki no kyojin basically laid out everything for designers. rules of the world carry the narrative.
>>
>>255068514
Love that series, but I don't think it'd make a good vidya setting. My vote goes to Dune

The thing with dune is, the lore was already kind of ruined by Brian Herbert. They could just pull a star wars I guess, and act like the non-Frank novels don't exist
>>
>>255071635
I like it, it's a fairly standard epic fantasy.

/lit/ is divided on Sanderson but he seems to be one of the few people around actually trying to write traditional epic fantasy, Rothfuss just does his mary sue harry potter shit, Abercrombie just writes unpleasant, GRRM-lite characters and expects you to like them and GRRM is just, well, GRRM (not that that's a bad thing, before the show everyone loved him).

So yeah, I like Sanderson. The main criticisms of him are that his magic systems are too mechanical (bullshit) and that his characters are too generic (some truth to this). But the worlds he builds are interesting enough to make up for any shortfall in another area.
>>
>>255071946
>Said the /lit/prole, whilst reading Eugenides, Franzen and other pomo faggot trash

Fact is, if Homer, Virgil and Dante Alighieri came back to life tomorrow, they'd find more in common with your average fantasy writer than they would your average self-indulgent shitlib like Franzen.

best settings for video games because exposition in manga focuses on mechanics.

>>
>>255072446
>Euginides, Franzen
>Pomo
u wot. Besides, I see more hate for Franzen on /lit/ than anything. If anything, they jerk about Pynchon the most
>>
>>255072593
exposition through mechanics is often good storytelling. you figure out how something works and the writer can invest you further into the story with no need to revisit established notions. and it translates exceptionally well into video games.
>>
>>255072593
Ugh, that's one of the main things I hate about Anime as a whole. It's like they don't know how to convey emotion in any way other than dialogue. The first half of Attack on Titan was a fucking chore to watch because of this.
>>
>>255071962

Probably end up being a MOBA or something.
>>
>>255072765
If you like "literary fiction" and consider it some kind of higher artform, especially scatological crap like Franzen, then you have no right to insult fantasy. Simple as that.

I'll accept fantasy authors as inferior to the likes of the Russians and even Dickens & Co, but people like you have fuck all to be elitist about.

The Knights Radiant class system just begs for RPG or multiplayer gameplay.

>>
>>255073172
>I don't know how anyone could complain about more transparent and explained magic systems. Stormlight is great.

The complaint is that it takes away from the "wonder" of magical systems, but I don't think that's strictly true with Sanderson. Mistborn for example is still full of things that sort of... sit outside the more "mundane" level of everyday magic. Likewise with Stormlight.

It's doubly retarded when they complain about Sanderson but like Abercrombie.
>>
>>255073550

In what way are Abercrombie and Sanderson alike?
>>
>>255073718
I'm not saying they're alike, I just find Abercrombie incredibly boring. I tried to like him, really.
>>
>>255073802

So why is it retarded to complain about Sanderson's magic systems and like Abercrombie?

THEY DON'T
>>
>>255074034

>>
>>255074242
It'd just have a hero system ala Warcraft 3 to go with the nameless units. Where you think all those MOBA heroes came from son?
>>
>>255073915
It's retarded to dislike Sanderson and like Abercrombie because one is very clearly a better fantasy writer than the other, who merely tries to be some sort of even more gritty GRRM.

I also disliked the way it's plainly obvious that Glokta is his Tyrion, and that the narrative implies by backstory that you're meant to feel some sympathy for him. The problem with Glokta is that he's totally unsympathetic, totally transparent and totally two dimensional.
>>
>>255074128

Yeah right, are you gonna try to tell us there are Star Wars prequels next?
>>
>>255074343

>DotA stole this from WC3
>the hero system is literally right there in the fucking game

>>
>>255074491
I read the first two, didn't read Last Argument.

Glokta's just fundamentally unsympathetic dude, his motivations are entirely transparent (was tortured, now finds solace in devoting himself to work as professionally as possible) to the point you find yourself questioning whether there's anything more behind it, but there never is, that's the two dimensional part.

Also, unlike Tyrion his internal monologues just make him seem even more loathsome.
>>
>>255074790

Read the last book and reevaluate that opinion.

I do, I don't deny a lot of fantasy is awfully written, and genre fiction can never really stand with the classics prose-wise or in terms of character development.

But it's a lot, lot better than contemporary literary fiction, that's my point.

For the record, sci-fi is generally a lot more poorly written than fantasy imo. Not sure why that is.
>>
>>255075559
>For the record, sci-fi is generally a lot more poorly written than fantasy imo. Not sure why that is.

Written by autistic STEM types generally I guess. Niven's the perfect example, god damn Ringworld is one of the worst written things about an interesting concept I've ever read.

I get your point as well anon. Fantasy and sci fi can really tap into myth and imagination.

Some really unrecognised authors out there that get lost in the egocentrical fuckfest that life can become sometimes.

I just read recently Stanislaw Lem, Eden. Such a great book.
