Ryu will teach you the bare basics of the game. Learn him and things just kind of fall into place.
Also don't try to learn a shit ton of combos because chances are you won't be able to pull them off until your skilled enough.

Start with very basic ones, a lot of big ass impressive combos are fucking useless against a skilled player that know how to defend properly.

Learn to guard efficiently first. It's what seperates casuals from people who want to play seriosuly

Learn Super Turbo first. An ST player can get into 4 easily but a 4 player will be shit at ST.

Don't misconstrue this with them being easy to get good with. They both require raw footsies and fundamentals to excel with. But at the base level they help you learn these things the fastest.

The easiest intermediate/advanced characters are something along the lines of Cammy and Yun.

I actually found alot of what i played from Garou and GG more useful then ST in SF4. Now ST helped and its a great fucking game. But Garou and GG have a mix of footsies and mixups. ST isn't so much about mixups as raw footsies.

You don't need a fight stick to be competitive. They offer no hard advantages over a pad.
With that said OP you should definitely get a cheap one and see if it's more comfortable to you.

ok. i ask because i first played sf on sega genesis but that was far too long ago. any other experience i had with the game was probably on zsnes (keyboard) and later psx and psp sf alpha. by then, the controllers felt really weird to me. it was tough trying to do anything that required a 360 so i never could learn well.

The SF4 shortcuts forced me to be more deliberate about a lot of motions to avoid getting other things by accident. In older games I had a habit of overshooting my inputs to ensure I didn't miss one. Come to SF4 and try to play character like Seth and I'd get 360's while trying to do a simple sonic boom.

So, point being it isn't necessarily detrimental to a newbie's execution in the long term.
