MELEE AT EVO
POST ACTION REPORT
HUNGRYBOX RETAINS GOD STATUS
AXE IS UNDISPUTED BEST NOT GOD IN THE WORLD
LEFFEN AND HAX ARE OVERRATED
FOX STILL WINS LOL
NOW SOMEONE FUCKING NETPLAY ME
>Everybody is happy and smiling
>M2K and Armada standing awkwardly and pushing up their glasses in a wave of autism
What the fuck, man.
They are, apparently M2K has been training Scarfland and that's why he improved so much.
A friend of mine is a journalist and has been in contact with ZeRo after an interview, he and M2K are hanging out all of the time.
>Implying Smash not fighting game.
Mahvel should go to the other thread because this one is for Melee, not because casual elitist's segregation that died in 2007 except on /v/.
He wasn't fucking around at all, HBox is simply better than him at the moment.
Peach counters Fox well, Fox counters Puff well, Puff counters Peach well.
They're the Trinity right now.
True, it's just that when Armada and Mango fight it's the closest level of skill meeting seen in smash.
That's why people wanted armada and him to be in the champion finals, because the fight would have been great.
Sadly Armada was fucking around with young link for some reason.
The Peach/Jigglypuff matchup is fucking god-awful. Hbox would trounce him every time, which is why he learned Yink to try to shamelessly camp him out. This is honestly the first time I've seen Hbox beat his Yink.
It was a tricky situation:
I wanted Hbox to beat Armada because, like I said, I've never seen him conquer the Yink before.
But I wanted Armada to beat Hbox so that we could see Mango/Armada again.
>Smash autists really think that Nintendo isn't just promoting this shit to hype up Sm4sh
>Implying if Nintendo even bothers with EVO next year it'll still be for an old game they can't make any money on
Christ, you've got some blood in your stool, friend.
This is the first year the competitive scene has been recognized as legitimate by Nintendo. Since this year went so well (arguably), we can maybe hope that Ninty will start adding in pot bonuses for big championships like this next year.
Hell, the people at Nintendo probably didn't even know that was an option; they've been so disconnected from the scene for so long.
So as far as best in the world goes:
3. Hungrybox (I hate myself for doing this)
978. Goku X-treme
This list seems pretty accurate, right?
>Smash autists really think that Nintendo isn't just promoting this shit to hype up Sm4sh
>people even thinking that in the slightest
What kind of alternate dimension do you live in?
Yeah, the powerrankings are tougher now. I think I'd go:
Mango > Armada > HBox = PPMD > m2k
Unfortunately. I was pulling for the King to make waves this year, but he just can't keep his focus for a full tourny anymore, it seems.
And I've always been a DrPP fan, but he can't seem to say anything against Armada these days.
M2K moved to SoCal with his friend Sky so he can retire from tournaments, and focus on streaming. He doesn't have much longer in him. The stress is getting to him. He'll probably go to SoCal locals but thats about it. M2k is losing his competitive spirit.
It'd be fucking grand. Low items, no Pokes or ATs or Spicy Curry, no walk offs, everything else is fair game. 4 player ffa added as a separate tourney mode
It'd be exciting as fuck. Melee has gotten stale as it is. The best thing could happen is finding balanced rulings with items and less stage limitations through Nintendo's official sanction which would make people follow a better new standard. Grand finales no items maybe.
its irrelevant tho
its not like 99% of people who watch either will benefit more from watching one instead of the other
all you do when you post is show how much of an insecure asspained assfaggot you are
one event that isnt assfaggots and you literally cant deal with it
What a bummer. He really was untouchable for a good year or so.
Tied for 17th, which is better than he did last year at Evo.
But I'm pretty certain this is his last tournament, because he hasn't convinced himself he can devote his life to the game (can't blame him).
It was good watching smash
that pikachu match was the hypest of the tourney, shame there's no announcement from sakurai or reggie
Time for 500hit infinites because marvel is boring as fuck
>listening to Melee it on me
I watched that shit and they were all spouting retarded biased shit, their braindead opinions do not dictate who's "considered" top class especially the moron that is Scar, have you heard him commentate? He's a complete joke when it comes to things like that.
Before EVO HBox was coming out pretty even only ever losing to a single stock, now he's got the Young Link matchup down and it showed by him stomping Armada twice.
Three stocks and two stocks out the ass.
ALL Fighters are nigger-infested. I live in a 90% white area and whenever there's local fightan tourneys its STILL like 50/50 black vs everything else. I seriously don't get it.
Reminder that the E3 invitational and sponsoring EVO was just a publicity stunt by Nintendo. They don't give a shit about the tourney scene. They just used the tourney scene as a marketing platform.
it's just the genre of videogame that's insanely popular with black nerds.
I think it's because it screams "masculinity" and has the same elements that attract blacks to DBZ and Bleach.
It's mainly marvel and street fighter though.
Can't fucking deny Mango is a seriously fantastic player.
I'd just like Hungry to win. He played absolutely astonishingly good there winning from a 2-0 disadvantage twice and manages to get to the fifth round in Grand.
Of course, Axe or aMSa would have been even better than that again, but let's be fucking honest for a second: Axe and aMSa would be utterly raped and left for dead by Mango and that's the ugly truth.
The community has tried items before and it makes the fast characters even more dominating. No items is the reason why jiggs/falcon are even viable. Put them in and they are horrible with most of the cast. The game becomes space furry, space bird, or trangender ninja. Brawl would be even more of a MetaKnight circle jerk fest with items.
Axe and Amsa aren't on the same level at all. Axe is a much better player and plays a better character. Pikachu SHITS on fast-fallers if he can hold his own in the neutral game. Axe nearly beat Mango earlier and 3 stocked him in one of the games. Fox is dead the second he goes off stage against Axe's edgeguarding.
>It's never worked but that doesn't mean it won't ever will! I swear!
It's insanity. They tried it with melee. They tried it with Brawl.
Let it end. Items have no place in tournaments. They are there to dick around with in party settings.
and is at 15 to 3 in sets with mango, with mango winning 15 sets over hbox's 3. armada and mango are tied. armada is definitely better. doesn't matter if he lost to hbox, he's a better player overall.

>Axe is a much better player
Hold it right there. Go look up how to play Yoshi and you'll realize what level aMSa is actually on.
They're close but aMSa I think is better, especially looking at Axe objectively in his matches there were a ton of mistakes.
Axe was too excited today. The type of whiffs he was making are not the norm. Axe is much stronger in neutral and has a better punish game. aMSa has god like reads but he struggles at adapting and mixing up.
Axe is A+ Class and aMSa is A- Class.
Naw M2K has talked about it on smash boards. Mewtwo gets better with items(high tier if I remeber correctly) but so do the spacies and Shiek too. Mewtwo is shit without an item. The top 3 literally keep all their control options and get the advantages of being able to zone you like a bitch with items.
There can be a number of possible setups with items. Just because one didn't work and was sworn off forever, doesn't mean something else can't. They would change the entire meta of the game, but that's the point, it's stale as shit. I'd point to 20xx but it won't matter, this December Smash4U takes over and Melee finally dies.
aMSa is right up there in skill with the top 5 gods in my opinion, he just handicaps himself with Yoshi.
If he put the time he put into Yoshi into Fox, we wouldn't even be talking about Mango right now, aMSa would win all the tournaments.
20XX is indeed here and it's worse than I could have possibly imagined. Armada, aMSa, HBox, and Axe need to drop their "unique" characters and just start playing fox full time or else we are going to see Mango literally winning every single tournament.
Fox has reached Meta Knight status and this tournament has proven that. I love Melee but I'm off the bandwagon. It's the same small group of players in the final 8 and it's always mango with Fox that ends up winning. The game is extremely predicable and boring, the ceiling has been hit and it's time to put Melee to sleep.
I can't wait for Smash 4.
I can see how you'd think that, but I'd still put them in reverse, with aMSa being A+ and Axe being A-.
Those aren't thanks to just skill by itself, they're also on the character. Pikachu's neutral is much easier than Yoshi's and Yoshi is an extremely fucking high skill level character having a shit ton of tech that only applies to him and no one else. Pikachu isn't even close to that level.
Put in perspective I think aMSa is the better player, but still hasn't mastered his character. Whereas Axe is a really good player but has much better handle on his character and the options he has.
>aMSa is right up there in skill with the top 5 gods in my opinion, he just handicaps himself with Yoshi.
No he isn't. His punishes suck dick compared to the top 5 and he has a hard time in neutral. He makes some godlike reads though. Come on /v/irgins don't become the mangonation for amsa. I like him but he's not top 10 in melee.
I think project M could also be good if they'd just stop with all the changes and stabilize already.
But after watching this latest snoozefest, I'm absolutely through with melee.
It was great seeing Hungrybox doing so well. Much better than I expected. I actually started suspecting he had been sandbagging in previous tournaments to get people to not prepare for him, he looked so good.
People always say he is bad because he uses gimmicks or whatever, but he did some cool comboes, and it is really impressing how he is able to dodge Fox' lasercamping and getting close. Fox just jumps back and forth shooting lasers, and even has an 'Upsmash to win'-button, while Jigglypuff is doing real magic dodging all this and somehow managing to get close, and then pulling off some amazing combos. Hungrybox is really a great player.
They're sworn off because there's no way of knowing where they spawn as well as making the game extremely campy since it practically gives everyone free projectiles at no cost.
I'd like to see them come back though just to know how the metagame for it would really develop.
That's just wrong. Ken was untouchable, Mango has been beaten multiple times.
Axe is literally on the cusp of being an S class player. He has the closest sets with the gods of anyone who isn't one of them. If the five gods are suddenly banned from entering tournaments Axe is the clear favorite at every event.
>Smash4U takes over and Melee finally dies.
oh, you mean like with brawl? I admire your optimism, and I can only hope SSB4 has gameplay that just as satisfying/fun/deep as melee (if not more so) but I seriously doubt it. Sakurai has made a couple concessions to the competitive players, but I don't see him allowing any more advanced techniques ever again. It might be a little faster paced than brawl, but I think it'll have the same low skill ceiling. Call me a pessimist
I don't care if it's just a marketing plug, this video from Reggie is cute as shit.
Did they play this on the Evo stream or something and I missed it?
I have high hopes for PM because there's theoretically nothing stopping it from becoming supremely balanced, allowing an entire roster of viables. Can no one else see this and want its sheer glory?
Vectorman. He was considered the best Yoshi in the world and really famous for it before aMSa stole his spotlight. Hopefully he'll take over now that aMSa retired.
In a way he did, he more or less killed his Smash persona and left the community that missed him because it became too serious with MLG and he just wanted to have fun with friends
The animu pictures were pretty bad though
>F-Fox is the best character guys, he always wins
You really don't know shit about the game. Mango is just a great player, he won a shit load of times with Puff, he dominates with Captain Falcon and he does great with Fox. He's also expressed interest in picking up Marth and if he does guess what? He'll continue being great with him too.
Armada has also beaten Mango at times and he definitely struggles with the matchup so if Fox was such a dominant force like Meta Knight was then we wouldn't see the different characters that we saw in EVO because it would have just been 8 Foxes.
The changes are trying to stabilize the gameplay in terms of balance. They've done a damn good job so far - fox and falco are still above the others, but the gap is much narrower than in melee. They're doing gods work taking melee's gameplay and making almost all characters viable.
fuck zelda though. that cunt can go to hell
Yoshi has character exclusive tech but Pikachu does as well, and Yoshi's isn't as hard as people make it out to be, it's just very different. Saying Yoshi is outright harder to master than Pikachu is absolutely not true. Both are two of the highest skill ceiling characters. Axe's mastery over Pikachu is ridiculous and overall there have been Yoshi's closer to Amsa's level than than any Pikachu is to Axe's level.
Amsa has a lot of trouble when people force him to go on aggresive and approach. Compared to Axe, Amsa has big holes in his play. Amsa's punishes are really good but his neutral game isn't that great. Honestly the MLG and EVO results between the two speak for themselves.
Amsa is an amazing player but he gets by a lot on people not being experienced with the Yoshi matchup and it showed at MLG where the sets were all 3/5 and his opponents kept adapting to him after the first few games.
Thats what happens when you make characters into floaty spacies. The spacies are somewat balanced by the fact that they are combo food for the whole cast. Mario,Pit, and Mewtwo are floaty as shit and hard to combo with stupid recoveries, amazing combo games, good projectile game, etc.
I don't think 20XX is here quite yet, but Mango is making a very strong case for it with his fox.
Armada, HBox, and Axe are the only ones preventing total 20XX domination and out of those only Axe has a real shot of truly stopping it in my opinion.
Armada is a hell of a player and will always be a threat but I think he has hit a ceiling with his Peach. He was pretty even with Mango for a while, but Mango beat him pretty convincingly at MLG and KOC4. I think his era is done.
HBox is also a hell of a player but isn't even close to top tier. He had a very close set with Mango but relied on rest to do any kind of damage to mango and rest is very sketchy and he can't fly on that alone.
Axe is our only hope. He lost to mango sure, but he also totally dominated him in one of the sets. If he can learn to string that skill together for a whole match, he will go places. Axe/Pikachu are going to prevent 20XX and keep Melee at least somewhat interesting for a while.
Only wavedashing, and I guess moonwalking, are unintended consequences.
>different unintended advanced tactics arise from kerfuffle?
Pretty much guaranteed but that doesn't mean they will be useful in actual play.
That just isn't correct. Most everyone has character specific tech, but Pikachu's is absolutely not as difficult as Yoshi's and in order for Yoshi to be any good you have to use all of it in conjunction perfectly without whiffing and you could see a ton of whiffs from Axe on Pikachu that he got away with.
But I don't know enough as I should to be saying things definitively so I'll just let it go, but you really shouldn't imply that Axe isn't also skidding by on people's lack of knowledge of Pikachu.
It'll be an uphill for him now, I'll enjoy the show.
>Nintendo forces major events to hose SSB4 instead of melee to promote the new game
>forced to use Nintendo's format of time battles with sudden death rules
>matches are now about camping out until sudden death and landing one hit before the other guy
They weren't. The speed and physics of the game were made in such a way that allowed for stuff like wavedashing. Sakurai and co. knew about it beforehand but opted to leave it in. Brawl was tuned to be slower and inclusive as a response. I never really understood why since Melee accommodates slower play.
This was the year Brawl came out, there wasn't some great big split between Melee and Brawl players yet because the game was so recent. This was 100% the Smash community being shit and stealing prizes from literal children.
This isn't true at all.
If you watched his interview after KOC4 you will know that he is a total tier fag. He gets asked about aMSa and says that he is a great player but will never win because he plays a shit character and limits himself too much and he flat out says he would wreck him because Fox has too many advantages.
He also USED to play characters like Jigglypuff yet he became as dominant as he is now once he started playing exclusively Fox. That isn't a coincidence anon. Fox is considered top tier for a reason.
Don't get me wrong, Mango is a hell of a player and IS the best Fox in the world, but he doesn't play Fox because he enjoys Fox and wants to have fun. He plays fox because he is a try hard and wants to win.
>HBox is also a hell of a player but isn't even close to top tier. He had a very close set with Mango but relied on rest to do any kind of damage to mango and rest is very sketchy and he can't fly on that alone.
Stopped reading there. And you should just stop pretending you know jack shit when you're very clearly talking out of your ass.
>there wasn't some great big split between Melee and Brawl players yet because the game was so recent
except there was
people like scar were shitting on Brawl from the first gimpyfish videos
and I've still never even found a source on that story. It's all FGC people saying it happened and Smashers saying it didn't.
Axe said he avoids playing Pikachu, and only uses him in big tournaments, because he don't want people to get skilled against Pikachu. So he is actively manipulating people's matchup experience and is actively thinking about it. This is something Axe is aware of. Hopefully he will continue doing good. I'm hoping Pikachu has just been really underrated and actually has what it needs to stay relevant even when people get matchup experience
> I never really understood why since Melee accommodates slower play.
Same here. I don't understand why others on /v/ argue that sakurai is just trying to cater to the casual audience. The inclusion of in-depth tactics does nothing to prevent casuals from playing in a non-competitive way. Melee was great because it could be enjoyed as a party game AND as a competitive game. Best of both worlds because they're not mutually exclusive.
Pikachu still has hard to use things like his up air hitboxes and quick attack that Axe almost never fucks up. He makes Pikachu look easy but even just how little he kills himself with quick attack is a mark of his mastery of the character. Pikachu is also generally difficult to play in the neutral game due to a lot of shitty things like poor reach, worst shield in the game, among the worst grab ranges and almost everything he has being crouch cancelable. Amsa does whiff stuff also, he even admitted his neutral game isn't that good and that he depends on the gimmicks too much.
And Axe isn't skidding by on people's lack of knowledge of Pikachu anywhere near as much as Amsa is on Yoshi. That's a fact. He's been around a long time and almost every top player has played him several times. He adapts and plays around stuff like Armada crouch cancel down-smashing every fucking hit because he's good, and he's much more secure against the top players than Amsa because people knowing how to play against Pikachu doesn't mean they can do anything about his edge-guarding or overwhelming aggressive style of play. Amsa by comparison is a lot more defensive and gimmicky which holds him back when people force him to approach and know how to work around Yoshi's strengths.
reminds me of the old nintendo pokemon tournaments.
>oh, you guys almost universally like to play singles with legendaries banned?
>ha ha, FUCK YOU, doubles with all legendaries allowed
No lots of people played Peach back than in the NA with wife, pinkshinobi, etc. People knew how to fight peach and still do. Armada just plays her as optimally as a human being can.
