I've got up to volume 10 too, and read up through volume 6 recently while on vacation. The tankoubons have actually got a whole bunch of supplementary material about stuff like body types/genetics/trait inheritance in mixed-race families, as well as the historical development of Kanata City (the town they live in), which make them a pretty good investment on top of the scanlated chapters.

They make for a pretty good excuse to reread the series as well. Volume 10 is when the official releases finally pass the scanlations and get into new material; I just put in my order for volumes 11 and 12 earlier today, and plan to catch up through the rest of the volumes soon.

I think it's pretty apparent that Hime and Nozomi's relationship is deliberately meant to be ambiguous. You can easily view it as a potential crush, or just friendship. Since this is /u/, we hope that it'll eventually lead to them getting together (even if it's only offscreen, once the anime and manga end). There won't be anything to contradict that, neither of them will get boyfriends or any romance with guys whatsoever. Pretty standard for a SoL show.

I think there's also a lot of subtle mentions that enforcing equality through fear is also a problem. Suu-chan once mentioned that she prefers when people are open with their questions about her culture and species, when the Mitama kids were sort of scared but curious about her. I definitely feel like the anime is upping the level of yuri from the source material. There was yuri in the manga but it was spread out among a lot of other things and more subtle. Whereas the first two episodes are jam-packed with yuri moments from different chapters. The more I think about it, it looks pretty normal to their reality, actually. It might be too much thinking without considering their culture, but all makes sense.
America values "freedom" over everything, but in a lot of places of the world, saying the wrong thing can get you in problems. Japan might no enforce things to that extreme, but they have some sensitive topics that aren't allowed on TV, for example.

Mounting centaurs is racist because of their history. It's like using words that weren't meant to mean anything bad is racist to us because of the context they were used once. It's why using certain symbols is even considered a crime. Mounting centaurs is a offense to their races, because of the way they were used in the past. But her friends can talk and make fun of her weight, something that could be seeing as racist, with no consequence. The same way they can snuggle on an angel wing. If in the past angels were captured to make clothes with their feather, that would probably be a offensive gesture. But they can do things that will discriminate them, as long as it has not historic weight.

One thing that makes it different of a dystopia is the lack of censure. In the manga they make sure the snake people should be respected, as foreigners in their country. Still, the same country sells movies despicting those people as monsters. Kinda like American does for natives, or Japan does with chineses. If their enforcement of equality was that strong, those movies should be banned. They're cleary discriminatory.

There's a part not shown on the anime where littering on the mermaids school would make the soldiers shoot you. It might seem extreme, but remember how that's the environment they live, and they even rise the water on normal days. Having trash thrown in there might be actually dangerous for those people.

I don't remember the guys creeping looking at the teacher in the manga, too.

That's the thing. I might've missed it, but I didn't remember those men in the black checking the school in the manga. The anime puts so much emphasis on this kind of thing while in the manga it just looks more like a "this is how our world works". I won't disagree that the anime does give a creepy feel with their society, but the original work has a different feel, while following the same theme.
