They might give us something during this summer event, especially considering it's been a while since Pharah got any new skins. Although creating a skin that shows off her figure without disrupting her silhouette or making her abilities look silly seems kinda impossible, to be honest.
There is an early Pharah's concept art of a guy who just has a jetpack with wings strapped to his back, so something similar might work but it'll still need to be bulky enough to look like her regular skins.

The official story is that they don't want to bring too much stuff from other IPs because Overwatch is supposed to have its own universe or some dumb shit like that. Because pimp Lucio, Sentai Genji, "Cruiser" D.va, "It ain't me" Soldier, fool Junkrat, Valkyrie Mercy, Jetstream Hanzo and other "legendary" skins are all very consistent and totally not immersion-breaking.

I think it's less "muh immershun" and more they don't want players giving their attention to other franchises while playing the game. HOTS is fine because it's literally a bottom of the barrel effort cash cow, while Overwatch is Blizzard's new baby. They'll want to make it as unique and desirable as possible without milking the nostalgia crowd. At least not yet.

And Pharah's getting annoyed because their star utility isn't showing up to practice and the tournament's next month.

Forget the spinoff, this is already the main premise of Japanese Overwatch.

They can be. Most of the time the cafe is a centerpiece but they're usually modern too. Modern AUs have the grace to be more upfront about being obviously different in potential setting.

Same reason people don't like Highschool AUs or Bookstore AUs. They bring nothing to the table, usually are OOC and mostly just used to have two characters meet/shag without the writer having to worry about how it will work in the actual setting.
That and there are thousands of them. Kinda gets stale after a while, even if it's your thing.

Chars in AU usually just turn into a typical tropey bs that happens to look like some established characters. A decent writer can literally write anything into canon. Not being able to do that is just called being bad.

They're debatable most of the time and also most of what >>2361688 said. They lose any appeal when it's like the go to quick and dirty AU and for things more fantastical or just sci-fi it's a bland way to just get them to bang while not including the interesting stuff from the setting.

I think the exceptions to that are "what if?" AU fics. For example a fic that mostly sticks with the proper canon but might alter a small amount of factors, such as having a character alive who was killed in the canon or having somebody have a slightly different profession, etc.

Can't speak for everyone, but I don't mind "what if?" fics, as long as the setting stays the same. Even if key events change (say, in case of Overwatch, instead of Omnics revolting and killing humans someone decides to write a story where anti-Omnic extremists started a war, for example), as long as the basic concepts are there and you can recognize the original, it's all fine in my book.
Coffeeshop/Highschool/Whatever AUs don't fit that principle, however, and as >>2361706 said, they usually degrade characters to most basic tropes. Reading the 100th fic about a stereotypical femme fatale seducing a stereotypical naive energetic girl while drinking her espressocinolatte gets boring pretty quickly.
