I don't know, but I've binged studying the cultural aspect of japan regarding sexuality. While homosexual sex has always been openly allowed, every girl must end up as cock holsters. I mean, what the fuck? In Medieval Europe, homosexuality was outlawed but so was homosexual sex, so at least they considered sex as something sacred. And I'm sure that Medieval European lesbians could easily choose to become chaste and live in a monastery with other girls, that's at least better than being forced into marriage. I'm following an Aikatsu! fan artist and she draws a lot of yuri art and made several books exclusively yuri. She even made a one shot original yuri doujin (I'm still looking for it dammit). I can't say she's a lesbian, though. I can understand she wants to be secretive about it, but signs point to the idea she's into girls like she tends to retweet a lot of posts regarding yuri. Confusingly, she drew some BL art as well.

Anyway, I'm gonna follow her on Twitter and see how she'll move on. Will she remain single, continue working as a desk clerk in a love hotel, seek out other women, or become the next generation of yuri mangaka? Or will she eventually marry and have kids? I hope she'll keep her Twitter when that time comes.

Additionally, I know a few Aikatsu! fan artists who are female and some of them do GL, BL and hetero art. I think they're bisexual or they like girls, but never go to yuri territory.

NanoFate popularity was because they were pretty much the only yuri couple at the time. Same with other anon's examples, in fact.
Now there's things like Ymir/Historia, Precure pairs (MahoTsukai is still getting a lot of fanart even though it's over), any MTK show (the hot one now being New Game), Bandori is getting a lot of fanart on twitter, as well as some smaller stuff (some pairings in Granblue, Izetta and FliFla, even fucking Dragon Ball now...), and of course, the recent trend KemoFure.

Most anime don't have anything more than seasonal appeal so it'll naturally fizzle out unless you get a huge fanbase like nicomaki doujins or madohomu doujins which take on an entirely different life on their own. Touhou also does this where the fancreations are where the real life of the fandom is rather than the actual series.
And those 3 have production matching nanofate which also had this going for awhile, though I'd argue nanoha is one of the few anime that keeps its appeal long after it aired.

This is kind of true. There's way more stuff, so it's easier to consume huge amounts of media which makes each individual experience just a little less impactful. But I sure as hell would rather have Madoka, Pandora, YuriKuma, YuYuYu, Kemono Friends, Symphogear, and Flip Flappers plus all of those things sequels and their side content in five years instead of ShizNat, Himeko/Chikane, and NanoFate over ten. I actually find it pretty hard to recommend Mai-HiME and especially KnM nowadays, though Nanoha is still very worth watching.

Yeah, I actually watched Mai-Hime and Nanoha recently and I agree with this. Although Mai-Hime does have some strong parts, but the overal is just not worth it.

Mai Hime had plenty of other things going on that the yuri-related parts didn't get that much screentime, but when it did focus on the yuri-related characters, it's hard to call that subtext. KnM is very silly, but some people find it charming in its own way. I was sold on it in the first episode when a girl invited another girl to her birthday party by shoving a letter between her breasts since I found that hilarious.

It would probably have to be a moment where it's implied two girls had sex but you can't prove it happened. Off the top of my head:

Ange Vierge has two sisters that are heavily implied to have had sex off screen after being corrupted.
Symphogear has Hibiki and Miku sharing a bed for the entire series.
Nanoha StrikerS has Nanoha, Fate, and Hayate all wake up in bed together once randomly if I remember correctly.
The scene in HiME that shows Shizuru raping Natsuki was pretty subtle.


Alternatively, anything using a metaphor for two girls having or wanting sex with girls:
