SWQ was a lot of fun and did a lot to improve what we got in SW Anime S1 and S2. It was over the top and fun, and didn't start getting stupid until toward the end.

If you don't thing S1 and S2 were bad, then you'll probably hate anything that's trying to "fix" SW.

As someone who liked SWQ and thought S1 was eh and S2 nearly offensively bad, I also liked Brave Witches a lot. BW might actually save the franchise, I'm seeing a lot of activity on Japanese twitter.

On one hand, I do like some of the ideas posed - making the conventional human forces actually worth a damn (unlike in the show where they're mainly cannon fodder), making the witches a bit more like a military unit, etc.

Well yes. One of the major problems with SW, in addition to not really knowing what the hell it wanted to be, was the stark contrast between the setting we're told (Humanity circa WWII is fighting a desperate battle against an alien force) and the setting we're shown (Magical girls occasionally fight monsters by themselves, the rest of the time they're left alone in a gigantic castle).

The reason why people get offended by this is they want different things from the show. /u/ wants shameless y/u/ri fanservice, /ak/ wants /k/ shit. There was enough of both to whet the appetite, but in reality it failed for either audience (though marketed itself toward /u/).

SWQ was fixing SW for /ak/. I'm one of those /ak/ folks, myself.

It's more that SWQ did away with the fantasy nations and put the real world ones back in their place, 1940s cultural sensibilites and all (modified for the historical presence of witches, obviously). Meaning that coming from a restrictive and conservative background in Actual Soviet Russia, being deeply in love with another girl had some deeper psychological implications than just "kawaii uguu~ onee-sama".

From what I can recall, what might have been construed as "abuse" was more along the lines if Eila being hella jelly about the MC being a big brother figure to Sanya and Sanya getting a bit sick of Eila's overt jealousy.

Yeah, except he's dead, and it's pretty clear the show has her now interested in Mio (see her reaction to being kissed by drunk Mio, for example).

Some, not most - the primary problem is that when '89 finished original SWQ was still on eternal hiatus. So only those girls who had descendants relevant to the quest got any sort of info - Sanya most notably, since her Granddaughter had a prominent role. Beyond that, Perrine, Mio and Minna each got a mention or two. One of Minna's daughters ended up going full Yuri with one of '89s support cast, too.

Oh, and Georgette Lemare. She actually shows up repeatedly in '89 as a fairly important side character.

I am not against the idea, but it is as if I am gladly ignored the fact that SW is an alternate history and it is normal for things to work differently

Mysteriously in this type of histories the "OC" have more relevance even than the real characters or attribute to them that the real characters could have done or even did in the Canon

When I look to read a SW story, I want to read about the witches, not about new people hanging out with the witches. If I wanted to read about OCs, I'd look up some original fiction.

Because /tg/ is all about throwing weird things into stories and running with it. Most people who play traditional RPGs are fine with the idea of playable characters becoming important or focal points for the story, potentially to degrees that would be unacceptable in other media. Because that's the point of the story.
