One thing I always find curious (and a little amusing) is most of the artwork depicting Lillie and the female protag (or even with the male protag), the Starter Pokemon are shown in their initial forms instead of an evolutionary form of theirs.

I really hope nintendo doesn't backpedal on the yuri with ultra SM. They definitely know about it's popularity but the question is what are they gonna do about it? Saw this posted on the Splatoon subreddit about the species of the two. The innuendo is so strong it's practically canon already. Relevant section:
"As anyone who also took a look at the Japanese Splatoon Nintendo Direct might know, Pearl and Marina's names in Japanese are Hime (ヒメ) and Iida (イイダ) respectively.

Hime's name is in reference to the Hime-Ika (ヒメイカ), or in English, the Northern Pygmy Squid (Idiosepius Paradoxus), which is currently the smallest known squid to exist. This might explain why Pearl/Hime is so short in stature in the game. Probably stating the obvious for a lot of folks here, but "Hime" also translates to "Princess" in English, thereby putting a reason behind why Pearl is wearing a crown, whereas it doesn't really make a whole ton of sense otherwise. They're so tiny that they have to live sticking very close to various grasses in their habitats using an adhesive membrane on the tops of their mantles to prevent getting whisked off by the current. One of those grasses is Common Eelgrass, or scientific name Zostera Marina. I'll leave the rest to your imaginations.

As for Iida, her name is reference to Iidako (イイダコ), or the Webfoot Octopus (Amphioctopus Fangsiao) in English. They live in the waters between the Indian Ocean, Australia, and Japan and are particularly known for hiding in holes or shells, which might explain Iida's rather meek and polite (of not outright subservient (to Hime) manner of speaking in the Japanese version. They also have a tendency of pouncing on anything that's colored white as the clams they prey on are similarly colored. They are also quite tasty."

At least in Marie's perspective, it's pretty darn gay it can be a bit blink-and-you'll-miss-it, but among Marie's in-game snark in the Hero campaign, she sometimes works in some touching dialogue during the second half such as "me and Callie would watch the stars together".

The SP Agent art has always been female. The female inkling was designed first in the early stages of Splatoon 1. Agent 3's art is the female inkling. Agent 4's art is the default short-haired(tentacled?) female inkling.

Splatoon is a franchise where the female player character is prioritized.
