Why is age gap stuff so damn popular?

Great capacity for contrasting characters, mucking about with power dynamics, having protags with different levels experience that are also rather different in themselves. Plus they tend to come with for other popular themes like student-teacher or (usually parent-child) incest. Add in a bit of angst or tragedy due to the obvious problems with ages differences and you've got something that is emotionally satisfying as well as sexually pleasing.
