I love how easily Yuu and Touko are able to understand each other and almost read each other’s thoughts.

sloppy summary to keep you gaijin content

going through play lines while thinking about how she's not like her sister

Mistakes of that nature are common with translations. With Japanese, getting mixed up about who or what has which role in a clause is easy, and also the same form of verb is used for both make someone do something and let them do it.

Speaking generally about learning Japanese, 1 year is enough to get to the point where you will be able to follow manga well enough that you will probably enjoy it more than reading translations (although it requires effort). However, that's not the same as understanding well enough to translate accurately and the diminishing returns are fierce, so there are fan translators who have been active for a few years who get confused by fairly standard sentences and common idioms.

I'd say it depends on the translation too. Like it or not good localization is inseparable from good translation so I guess reading plain and uninspired TL can turn away some learner. It's good that you enjoy reading because you'll be more motivated to learn and improve but if you're not careful you could end up like those obnoxious nerds that put people down for not reading it in original language.
