People seem to hate A1 (dunno if there is a good purpose, I almost don't watch current anime at all), but you have to give them that Vivid Strike looks way shittier than what they did in Vivid TV.

At least for the side characters. 7arcs did okay job with the design and art of the newcomers (Jill, Yumina, Fuuka and particularly Rinne). Those look ok, but the rest consisting of ex-Vivids look fulltime-QUALITY and very generic.

Sure, there was quality too, and style changes in an odd ep or two (#5 in S1). But they nailed the basis - to have cute chara designs in the slow/static shots. That's the start, it has to look good. And S1/S2/StrikerS and movies did.

In motion, it can look a bit worse and Fate's leotard can look like a thong, but whatever, as long as your fundament looks good, the anime looks good.

But Vivid Strike just gave no effort and Einhart, Vivio, Miura, Riona, Corona, Nove and all their pals just look like shit, very bland. It kinda harms the whole anime, they look too generic.

As/S1 had even the minor people look good.

Hmm, I just watched the start of the second episode of Vivid after some time.

It goes so nicely, exactly what I would like to see from Nanoha Mk.II. Too bad the manga couldn't follow that path through for somewhat more serious plot, more serious belkan stuff and more meaningful befriending and so on.

I guess there would still be people hating it, but if Subaru with Teana didn't take Einhart to their den of depravity straight away and we at lest get the classic secret/masked fighter plot for a season (few manga volumes), damn it would have been good. And it could at lest have established Einhart/Vivio and perhaps the other Belkan descendants as more serious mages/fighters, possibly paving way for their involvement in Force-like serious sequels.

No I will not give them that, just because they changed the production company doesn't mean the quality should go down to drain. The sequels should at least have some decent level of resemblance to the prequels when they switch production, I have never seen animes with such a 180-turn in quality until I saw Vivid and I'm usually not that nit-picky when it comes to quality. Sure Vivid Strike could be bland in its own ways, but Vivid Strike at least gives the feel like Nanoha franchise. 7Arc is not a great production company, but they should always do Nanoha franchise.

I paid more attention to the story than the quality, so what if 7Arc does have some quality issues back then and now? To me the quality wasn't too problematic except for Vivid, because the characters colors in Vivid were noticeably different than the others and had bigger eyes. I don't hate A-1 personally, it just that Vivid TV looks weird-er than the rest of the franchise.

It looks different but IMHO it matched the tone of the Vivid manga quite well and making a distinction between it and the "adult" Nanoha (I mean adult int he plot character, S1, S2 and StrikerS) was good since it distanced the SoL sport action from the original high stake incident plots.
The art already telling you to expect something esle was a good thing and the variety is not necessarily bad - the supplementary mangas before also had quite different style.

The Fuuka-Rinne thing in VS did have some of the bigger pressing drama of older Nanohas, but it got kind of half-assed by not very good direction and screenplay problems that managed to dull it a lot. I think it would still work pretty good if set with the Vivid TV art-style. (There isn't really any overlap in characters besides Nove and few other numbers cameos, anyway.)

Yeah, pretty much I agree with that. Or it needed to provide some other sense of necessity for the fights.

Well, tastes vary. It's possibly mine is in minority, but I think the palette is good (on my PC screen at lest, my TV plays it too brightly, but so it does with everything) and the designs were good, even if different from how Takuya draws.

That has more to do about how the adaption played out, for the most part. Vivid TV never got into the whole tournament arc dynamic opting to adapt the first few chapters, which with 12 allotted episodes took up most of the time.

It could be possible to condense that BUT... those chapters pretty much lay out how Vivio and Einhart relationship, which is something that most fans of Vivid (and let's face it, all of /u/) have an attachment to. There is no real promise that cutting that time would leave the relationship in tact in the same manner, and we know that fans would have a fit if that wasn't the case.


Truth is even with that both Vivid the manga and Vivid the TV show doesn't have much to entertain with unless you are really into the shipteasing, or the whole tournament arc. Which, when you compare it to the rest of the franchise, is MUCH different in tone. There is no sci-fi back drop, the military angle is near non-existent (which we can blame StrikerS for), the way that magic is used has changed (more of a contact thing than traditional spells), there is no really mystery to solve (Einhart starts out as one but it is resolved FAST and very little fills that void left by A's/The Original) and again, the cruiser full of characters to support.

I was gonna say that there is no way Fate would get into a fight at that age, that it would have to be just Nanoha getting angry and poor Fate would be perplexed, unhappy and probably rather anxious about the happening - but the doujin exactly nailed that and came with a totally plausible scenario, matching Fate's personality from As completely. It's fucking spot on. And it even doesn't make Nanoha look bad.

I really liked her so I always roll eyes when peeple start about character bloat. I think StrikerS did a good job using "excess" characters to make the world more lifelike. If there was just 2-3 other people shown besides the core cast, that would be rather weird. Yuuno was the mascot character of the first series, Fate was the cool yet troubled rival with whom the protagonist fell in love at first sight. In the pilot Fate's role was taken by Chrono instead, which made it even more obvious.

That is a bridge crossed when it happens but since Vivid is basically one large tournament arc and VS immediately used it a more of a backdrop. You can bet that if Vivid is extended in any manner (a second season, a sequel, etc.) it will likely use a tournament arc as part of the setup.

Honestly, I would rather that they drop it. I feel that Vivid doesn't do anything that is beyond the standard, hell EVEN dragon ball at least changed the format to the standard tournament arc.

Yes but tournament arcs are not really as important or prevalent as the memes say. Both series used them as an excuse to introduce new characters and then dropped those plotlines halfway through. The main issue with vivid is its lack of drama, something strike tried to fix, had vivid found something interesting to do with those characters it wouldn't be an issue.
If anything the overuse of mock battles and the fact that we never get to see the full tournaments are more annoying than the tournament arc itself.

I am not really saying that. I am saying that the whole thing has been rote from the moment Vivid attempted it. And it's only gotten worse when the contemporary (namely the dragon ball franchise) start redefining what that means.

It was never good enough as a backdrop since, at the end of the day there is nothing that make Vivid stand out with a such a rote element for the plot and using said element in ways that have been done hundred times before is other productions.
The "overuse of mock battles" simply delay the inevitable, which never really helps the fact that it does nothing new with what Vivid presents.
The whole thing is a wash, and Nanoha would be better served attempting something else than "Yet another tournament arc"

It's not since Vivid Strike. They started acting distant towards each other ever since spaceChina arc. You hardly, if not never ever, get to see them training alone together anymore.
The awkward distance between them is quite funny, though. Based on the way Vivio talks about Einhart and vise versa to other people, it's clear that they both still very much care and do understand the other yet when put next to each other, they can't hold a proper conversation.

But the important difference is that it in Vivid, we don't see why would that be, whereas in Vivid Strike, it is after a timeskip. It is pretty much unexplained in both cases, but in Vivid, you have seen everything up to that point so you don't get as funyn thoughts from it as in Vivid Strike, where this thing screams "something must have happened in the meantime".

This difference also kinda makes you downplay the "divorce" in Vivid and take it more seriously in Vivid Strike.
