Basically they expand on the chapter by having Tohru's father take her back to the world for a while, which has a pretty rough effect on Kobayashi. It's kinda interesting that they didn't go with the typical fashion of having all the dragons return home, as we end up getting to see Kobayashi as a single mother to Kanna, complete with a transition from maid-cooked meals to store bentos.

That's really not very creative either. They also probably have the power to cast a spell that would make them share their lifespan, but that would likely fuck with a Human's mental stability to no end under normal circumstances. I mean, sure. If you have someone whom you love with you then it's not so bad being (almost) immortal, but that would still mess with a normal Human. Personally, I'd be pretty okay with being immortal, even on my own, but I'm the odd-man-out, so to speak. Maybe you are missing the moral of the story. In the last episode, Tohru was thinking of even though she won't be able to be with Kobayashi forever, this didn't make her regret meeting Kobayashi and she was grateful for these moments, even though they'd last for only a while.
It is not about not being creative enough to think of a way to make them live together in dragon years, it's about the moral of the story. Which makes it more realistic and deep, since a lot if times people can't get what they want, so they must accept it and just value what they can have.

Understand that dragons have a tendency to be physically intimate without being more than friends. Remember, Kanna and Tohru used to lick each other clean, but they are not lovers.

What is meant to be way too close for humans is normal for dragons. In fact one could say that dragons don't culturally possess a mean to show love. They are capable of love, but they don't appear to have marriages and parents appear to be harsh to their kids by tradition.
