Stealing this thread for Oshiyama general.

I think he's fairly versatile as an animator but if his style would be ghibli-ish with fluid and lively movement. He's good at 3D camera movement.

Yuasa would appreciate his work in Space Dandy I think. I hope he can at least work as episode AD with Yuasa and have a future as a director not reverting to just an animator for life.

He reads psychology as a hobby and ideas in flipflap were just drawn from his hobby. I hope he can direct more Jungian scifis.

I feel the same way, but I also hope he comes back to yuri at some point as well. Flip Flappers delighted me on both fronts.

Perhaps one day he'll be able to make the space opera Flip Flap was originally going to be.

It's interesting knowing that even in a project as creatively free as this, some elements like the magical girl outfits were forced upon them by the producers.
I wonder weather /u/ thinks the producers had a positive or negative effect on the series?

Personally I definitely think those that pushed the costumes were the ones that tried to market it as a standard magical girl show and that negatively effected sales but I'm not sure about whether they effected the actual quality of the show.

Oshiyama might as well have been looking for ideas to make it more appealing and producers provided some ideas that he also agreed with. Iso's complaint was from his personal experience when he had very specific vision for what the work should look like. I think Oshiyama was fairly open to what his work should look like so it was probably more cooperative. He really didn't place himself high enough as a director, saying things like "if I fuck up I can go back to be an animator" or "I have 10k hours of experience as an animator and 0 experience as a director so I'll use animating skills more" or "I'm a no-name director and I need these moe elements to sell the work."

I think it is also suggested that the yuri itself was also producer's suggestion. I mean, two girls space opera doesn't have to be yuri but the producer got Yuniko on board first.

it's possible and it was certainly an aspect he expected to help sell the series. However Oshiyama seems to have been fairly enthusiastic about his "yuri lessons" and a lot of the defence of that aspect of the show came directly from him. His input in those ways is charming to me and is part of what makes me hope he isn't done with yuri.

Two female protagonists in a space opera seems a pretty good premise for a yuri work anyways so it's also possible that it was integral to the project from the start.

it is relevant when the quote is your "proof" that the idea to have yuri elements must have come from a producer. It's certainly a possible scenario but there is no solid proof.

Oshiyama was a staunch defender of the yuri in the series which may indicate he had a large hand in it, and the original premise seems tailor made for yuri from the start. But he also associated yuri as a thing to bring in fans which may indicate the idea came from producers. (though that idea seems naïve to me.)

Of course making an anime is a collaborative process, and it seems Oshiyama's style was to try to be both a perfectionist and open to the ideas of others. But wherever the yuri came from it was definitely one of the most well developed core aspects of the show and I will always be grateful for that.

She always seemed like a late-bloomer through and through. Her whole introversion and wallflower attitude and everything was pretty characteristic of a late-blooming pubescent girl, as was her thinly-veiled thirst. One thing that always struck me about Cocona was how BIG her hands and feet are. At the start of your growth spurt, those grow first and the rest of your body kinda catches up later, so it really did feel like it was a subtle detail about her being at that beginning stage of pouberty.
Maybe she didn't wear bras because she was just embarrassed about adult hygiene and that whole thing was still new to her. It's not like the bra police are gonna come and check.

I remember some people speculating that her whole run around the school in episode two was hinting at her getting her first period (hiding Uexkull as a substitute for hiding what was going on 'down there'). So maybe she was really that late (I'unno, 14 seems like it's kinda abnormally late so I'm not too sold on it).

her acceptance of her feelings for Cocona was really an acceptance of herself. Her henshin is not a pair like Cocona or Papika's she is now able to stand on her own.

Cocona implicitly forgives her but Yayaka realizes she can't have the relationship Cocona has with Papika and resolves to feel happy for them.

Pets are a good coping mechanism for dealing with something like a broken heart and some see the bunny as shorthand for maidenhood/ innocence.

her arc about coming to terms with herself as a person is much less co dependant than Cocona's and thus pairing her up with someone in the end would feel cheap. If the bunny really does mean maidenhood/ innocence than it says to me that Yayaka will now be able to let someone in like Cocona did with Papika but only after she takes some time to heal.

Yayaka pairing up with someone needs more effort than a pity paring, and she definitely didn't need to be their for Cocona and Papika's honeymoon so leaving her to forge her own path makes the most sense to me.

I think we're talking about two different things here.
The resolution to Yayaka's character arc: the apology and henshin and forgiveness and all that, that was great.
But the conclusion to her character: munching a creambox and petting a bunny she got on loan, that kinda sucks. Yes, it's a hopeful note, especially if you only look at it allegorically, but it's not a happy note. She ends with nothing but the possibility that things will get better some day. I wanted more than that. I wanted more than a vague hope of recovery. I wanted recovery.

This kills me. I had already picked her as my favorite character very early into the series, and already knew she lost because of the "curse of Yaya" meme, but it didn't really, really hit me until after I finished the show where I thought "damn, I'm sad Yayaka's been left alone"

Somehow, the explanation that Yayaka's going to set off and find someone else on her own is so unsatisfying to me. Maybe she's just stronger than I am. It's like a dark cloud hanging over anything related to a ship involving Yayaka, or even Cocona.

functionally she's in the same place as "girl who lost" in many other anime but her character arc and self acceptance / improvement makes her much more satisfying than most of them.

on the whole I felt she came out a little wiser, knowing more about herself and accepting herself more and those victories overshadowed her lack of a romantic partner.

besides, she gained those victories partially through the support of friendship but mostly through learning to stand for herself so pairing her up wouldn't really suit the character arc.

A somber but hopeful note just worked better given the circumstances.

Funny you should mention that, I thought that was one of the best things the ending did. My headcanon was that since KKK got blown the fuck up and YYK not having a place to stay, she would automatically end up at Sayuri's and those two as a pair just make too much sense for me. We have the headstrong and no bullshit YYK with the more relaxed and at times even playful Sayuri, over time the two could develop a pretty balanced relationship. It would also nicely showcase a more realistic approach to love. PPK and CCN were really like from a fairytale, sentimentally romantic in that they were destined to be soulmates which worked because of the whole fairytale vibe the show deliberately went for. With a possible YYK Sayuri couple we could see what a relationship is like that slowly blossoms through interaction between the two. They even have the whole angle of loving someone who didn't love them back with it just being a common past experience and not just simply pairing off the leftovers. If I could draw or I was rich, I'd definitely do something with these.

Anyways, while cute, I'm not sure if I'd call a romance blossoming between a middleschool girl and a college-aged woman 'realistic'. Not everyone can be Papikana about these things, there are some humps that need to be worked over before Sayuri can work over those humps, if you know what I mean.

I think the OT3 sort of arrangements work if we're considering an aged-up version of the characters where they've obviously had lots of time to work through things. Yayaka needs space, time and a bit of help to figure everything out again, but that doesn't mean she needs her childhood friend forever out of her life. Similarly, Cocopapi will eventually leave that loveydovey honeymoon phase where they can't keep their hands off each other and just move on to a point where they can be casually in love without making Yayaka into a 3rd wheel.

But I have an indescribable problem with long-haired Cocona. Why would she go out of her way to look more like her mother when she gets older? That just ain't right. At very least put it in a ponytail or a braid or something
