I watched the entire first season in one day because it was so fucking good. But the second season is boring as fuck. Even Kumiko herself is boring as shit, and she was so great in the first season. I'm on episode 9 and she's spoken to Reina like 3 times. The rest of the time she just stands there and watches everyone else's drama happen.

Personally I adored the first season of the anime, I haven't gotten around to watching the second season yet but I hear that it falters around there. It's undeniably Yuri baity,and probably the biggest cop out i've ever seen. The reason why people are so mad is because the show keeps portraying Reina and Kumiko in an undoubtedly romantic light, but they chickened out at the last second and left a lot of people unsatisfied. But I've seen enough anime to have gotten used to it by this point. You should never watch an anime JUST for the Yuri, it's always nice to see it canonised but it wont save otherwise awful shows.

I honestly think that >>2270073 is onto something since back in 2012 /u/ never really cared if the girls in question were involved in "het" romances (either crushes or outright relationship wise). As long as there was cute GirrlxGirl pairings to be made, and content to support them, then go at it! But for whatever reason all of a sudden "LGBT representation" in anime has become a bit of a hot button. Shows like K-On or Hidamari Sketch have no canon confirmation of the girls ever feeling more for each other than a strong friendship, but in recent years people have went from "wouldn't be cute if they paired up!" to "they are 100% gay for each other and you are BLIND for not seeing it" despite how the authors probably envision them getting married off to guys in their later years.

I feel as if this obsession with "it has to be CANON yuri" is overall detrimental to the board as a whole. Reina and Kumiko would certainly make a cute couple and there's SO much content of them paired together. Artwork, Doujins, Fanfics; enough content to fill threads quickly.

I went on a tangent there but I've been really sick of the attitude /u/ has had. It's ruining what would otherwise be fun threads. You can absolute criticize, bitch and whine about how the show copped out on the Yuri(it's justified), but outright saying that Hibike should be banned is retarded.

There seems to be 4 doujins but none of them are translated. I'm not surprised, when it comes to Yuri Japan seems to like it more when the "possibility" of Yuri is just there (Like Yui x Azusa, Kagami x Konata). Up until the hopes and dreams of Reina x Kumiko shippers were smashed all of the yuri subtext in Hibike was very heavy handed, wouldn't surprise me if it turned a lot of doujin authors off.

The pairing is still popular in Japan, there's still a fuckload of Reina x Kumiko pictures on pixiv. But I don't think that Hibike is what Japan typically looks for in their Yuri anime.

This doesn't become an issue in garden variety SoL because it is usually assumed that the author won't sabotage their own work. The need to establish canon only comes when a possible threat is introduced.

Less so abroad, but if you constantly send market signals that you're satisfied with these sort of non-committal scraps to feed your imagination that's going to be all, or at least the bulk of what you get. But that isn't a problem for people who couldn't care less about canon, or thereabouts.

Moreover, the real issue isn't just the source material being het. It's that the creator knowingly led you down the garden path with little hints designed to keep your interest and raise your expectations, only to shit all over you when you got to the end. I don't know what sort of person would feel happy seeing threads still being populated in droves after being shown such disrespect. Less fun and more embittering.

I see that page posted a lot, but I don't think I'd go as far as to say that it was more gay than the cheek caress and confession of love between Kumiko and Reina in episode 11, if not simply because that was more about their actions and the words said, while the excerpt from the book you bring up is mostly a long description of what's happening, there to paint a (admittedly rather steamy) picture of what's happening so the reader can visualize it, but DOESN'T really get into how either of the characters feel about any of what's being described. Although I will say that it was gayer than its corresponding scene in the anime.

But the book goes on at length about the descriptions of a lot of things. A lot of straight things as well. For instance, this scene describing Kumiko and Suuichi's "handshake".

I've only seen the first season, I felt like it would be obvious that Reina and Kumiko wouldn't get together since this isn't the first time I've seen anything with undertones (though the undertones here were overkill I'll admit).

Regardless I always interpreted as Kumiko x Reina as being extremely onesided considering how indifferent Reina seemed with her autism for trumpets. I could never imagine her returning Kumikos feelings.

Yuri on ice have the same issue. They hid the romantic relationship in a coach / student relationship in the last episode. Probably because a second season was confirmed. Hibike and Yuri on ice isn't on the same level but very very close.

Yuri on ice went further than Hibike but they were thrown back at the end as well. Plus Yuri on ice is anime original. Hibike is a novel adaption with a "end".

it won't be disappointing if you already know what happens. kumiko and reina have an incredibly romantic relationship, but then reina is also "in love" with the teacher, while kumiko is seemingly just patient and understanding about it. the problem is the show never explicitly deals with this, because the second season is about drama with other characters instead, so reina has no real arc and there is no romantic conclusion

basically the show tries really hard to be "real yuri", and it does go further than any other anime, but it's still unable to go far enough and it ends up being unsatisfying. the yuri scenes on their own are still incredible though

I've never understood this obsession with 'canon', honestly. Not just in regards to yuri, but fiction in general. It's really easy to just disregard stupid shit in a story, no matter how 'canon' it is. For example, Mass Effect 3 shipped without an ending. Fallout 3's story is naught but a deranged fever dream. So on and so forth.

It can be easy, but not when a story fails to deliver on something you truly care about. Since yuri anime is so rare, and this show did it so perfectly, it's extremely frustrating when it turns out that it's actually just some strange ambiguous friendship, with male love interests involved. Fanart and fanfics are great too, but they can't make the show itself more enjoyable to watch when the disappointment still seeps through it

Honestly, while watching the second series, it felt as though the show itself was trying to demonstrate how incompatible Shuuichi and Kumiko are, as well as how ridiculous Reina fancying Taki is. I'm not saying this out of loyalty for the yuri shipping or anything, because I'm not particularly loyal to said ship; if the other relationships were written convincingly, I'd adhere to them just as easily. As it is, they're not, so it's easy for me to just stick to the other ship. It's true, the show is directed as if Kumiko genuinely isn't attracted to Shuuichi, and Reina's crush on Taki is treated like a joke half the time. The over-the-top romantic imagery (especially the red string of fate) also seems to be sending the message that Kumiko and Reina are destined to be together.
But it doesn't happen in the show itself, and it's all very ambiguous, and then you read interviews with the creators acting like Kumiko and Reina are just close friends, and you find out Kumiko actually accepts Shuuichi's confession later in the novels, etc. I wish I could put that aside and still enjoy the amazing yuri scenes on their own but it's too irritating.

It's not really wrong. The people more importat to you can be a friend, family, or someone else you aren't sexually actracted because it's not your sexuality. In fact, most people I know don't even love that much the people they're in a relationship with. In real life, most people probably have as the most importat people in their life someone they don't have a sex life with.

But that's real life. When you're making a fiction, you're the one who decides the character's sexuality. And while she could make a story about platonic love, when she does it with a same sex couple, it doesn't have much value. I want more people making not sexual relationship between a man and a woman, that's unusual in stories, and so, it has more value. As have a lesbian relationship.

Still...platonic love doesn't involve checking the other people body and showing signal os being actracted by it. That's where Hibike makes no sense.

Come to think of it, that's the kind of build-up the second season was missing, both in terms of quiet moments between Kumiko and Reina and in building up the new characters and relationships we're supposed to care about prior to them taking over the plot. Mamiko was the only part that really worked, for exactly the reason that it had been quietly building up Kumiko's problems dealing with her since the first season. Trying to fit two volumes in one season didn't work well.
