How come all of Maki's pairings that aren't with Nico are so unappealing? I don't thinkeit's just the shipper within me, since I rather like Nico with Nozomi.

I feel the same way. For some reason for me, it's Nico or no one when it comes to Maki. I dunno if it's just me liking NicoMaki too much, because when I think about pairing Nico with people (aside from Maki) I'm actually okay with it, like NicoEli, NozoNico, NicoKotori--of course I wouldn't go out of my way to do that, but the thought is okay to me. With Maki, I just want Nico for her.

Kinda disappointing there isn't more NicoEli or NicoKotori desu. Like, you're right sis, those ships work quite well but then Nico is quite a dynamic character and she means a lot of things to a lot of different people with in muse, so she's capable of filling quite a few roles. Though it helps that she's able to play off a lot of people.


But with Maki it isn't really the same, like, because of her personality, she feels kind of inflexible and most of her potential relationships with other members of the group just feel watered down derivatives of her relationship with Nico.

Maki isn't bland, but she needs a foil to really work and none of the other girls are as good at it as Nico. The magical thing with her is that she's simultaneously Maki's inferior (poor, childish), superior (senpai, practical, mature in her own way) and equal (someone to argue with, part of the same sub-unit). Rin and Honk don't have an edge on her that would allow them to challenge and help her grow, aside from enthusiasm and that's a tired cliche. Nozomi does have a bit of a mentorship thing with her in the anime and they have a nice friendship, but a romance between them would feel unbalanced.

There's only so much that can fit into two cours (plus a movie), not to mention the staff/cast originally hadn't planned for a Season 2 at all.

SIF is good in that the stories fill in many blanks about how the members' daily lives are like, such as unit shenanigans and what they do when hanging as a group or with members in the same year. Nico offering to lend Eli her cardigan is probably one of their best friendship/bro moments. And as BiBi, it's interesting how Eli often goes along with Nico's stuff or makes Nico do things when Maki would just provoke/sass her.

It's yet another wasted opportunity to differentiate Sunshine from the original. Everyone knowing everyone else at least vaguely is a defining characteristic of small towns. I don't get people who claim there's no NicoMaki in season one. They're the only major couple who get any kind of romantic implications. Just looking at the first season, Rin and Hanayo are depicted as really good friends, as are Umi and Kotori (and the ending makes it pretty clear that Honoka's more important to Kotori than Umi). It wouldn't be unreasonable to assume Nozomi is in love with Eli based on her being an obvious lesbian who cares a lot about her, but there aren't any romantic scenes between them.

It's not that the amount of NicoMaki is staggering either, but they do get scenes of tension and then surprising closeness, like all the times they're seen walking or standing together. Kotori teases them about their relationship by bringing them a couples' milkshake. They get a big emotional scene where Maki prevents Nico from beating up Honoka by hugging her. It seems to me like a perfectly good start to a relationship.

Considering the amount of confusion new fans had on Season 2 (where NicoMaki was cranked up to 11), I don't think it was that obvious.

If anything, the early episodes were pitching HonoMaki with the classic Genkixtsun dynamic. She was the one who gave her the opportunity to explore her prospects in music and not just being a doctor. (It was Nico who did that in the Manga). Heck, season 1 is probably the only reason there is a HonoMaki ship since fanart only started popping up after that.

If you mean girls explicitly in love and they kiss and say "I love you in a romantic/sexual way and not just as friends" then you can probably count the number on one hand.

If you're more lenient, Love Live would qualify for most people.

As for HonoMaki, if they were a "designated ship", the plans must have changed somewhere since there's very little of it in the second half of the first season, aside from the scene where Honoka persuades Maki to invite them to her family's summer villa. In-universe, I like to think Honk's attracted to Maki without any deeper feelings involved and Maki doesn't know how to deal with her enthusiasm.

I'd go as far to say that there was definitely mutual attraction with HonoMaki. You can actually see more of it in their SID chapter like it could be more if it was explored. It just didn't happen, Maki grew closer to Nico and Honks loves her 2 BFFs too much.

Would have interesting to see at least. GenkixTsun is on of my favorite shipping archetypes. Heck, I would probably have shipped it if I didn't already ship Honoka with someone else. It was at least noticeable enough to spawn some nice doujins and fanfic.

I don't really care for HonoMaki, but I like the idea that their romantic lives could have worked out differently. Like there's probably a parallel universe where Nozomi joined the band after Nico's original bandmates quit, resulting in a much happier Nico, a lonelier and scarier Eli and everyone at Otonokizaka knowing you do not enter the idol research club's room without knocking first.

I always kinda liked Nico because I could relate to her plight but idk, like, it took me two years of psychological therapy to realise that part of the reason I was so scared of other people was because I was scared of the stress that might ensure if I wind up being obliged to help them through whatever mental anguish (because, hypothetically, at that point they're my friends) and also out of fear that if we were incompatible, I might upset them by cutting them loose.

The grumpy personality is easy to keep up and gets her what she wants (most of the time), while also preventing insults and people finding out about how she really feels/her hopes and dreams/the things she'd rather hide. I like how they gave the original third years (plus Maki) emotional baggage that was pretty low-key and realistic. There's loneliness, failures, family issues and unhealthy coping mechanisms there, but they tend to be underplayed and don't solely define those characters. It might be one of the reasons the franchise became so big outside your normal moe audiences.

I guess they went for a similar mood with Sunshine's third years, even including a shot of them looking sad in the OP. However, their past issues felt a lot more contrived and were a little too easily solved. Their second year drama worked really well, though.

And in terms of shipping, well, I never considered the original being very high in the subtext ladder, while Sunshine really managed to impress me.

I think you are overreacting. There are plenty of official material that shows how other ships work. Even if you interpret them as platonic its still a good read to see how tight µ's is with each other.It also gives them more dimensions since they can be seen in a different light with other members of µ's and not just be defined by how they act around their favorite shipping partner. Its why I roll my eyes when there are shipping wars in Love Live, its just limiting their characterization into a small shipping bubble.

This normally isn't a major factor, just about everyone in μ's has gone on record in support of NicoMaki, for example. What makes it unusual, however, is that Aida and Kobayashi give zero fucks about how the anime, staff and merch barely suggest anything to do with shipping at all (outside Chika/Riko), and still have gone on their merry way despite that.
While some might claim the only cause to ship their characters is because the portrayers are close, Aida also fuels Chika/Riko and other ships every now and then, and Kobayashi literally gave all her groupmates Valentines this year, so. It's not the only or entire basis; because by that logic, would you ship Eli and Hanayo just for that? On the other hand, they do hang out together a lot, comment to each other's stuff on Twitter/Instagram, etc., and have good chemistry. Aida is a self-professed little demon for Yoshiko (not Kobayashi).

The characters both have lines which make reference to each other (the Halloween set in particular). There are also event-triggered lines which imply that Riko's attention often is drawn to Yoshiko, such as those on Children's Day and Yoshiko's birthday. The Aqours main story also gives them a lot more interaction which was absent from the TV storyline. For example, they went out for karaoke with Ruby (tying in to their rest-day schedules shown in Dengeki G's magazine). One recent chapter has the whole group go shopping for cooking ingredients, and Riko nonchalantly rattles off a lengthy tongue-twister of a chuuni title for the recipe Yoshiko was making.

It's interesting to note that the "Yocchan" nickname originated from a time when people didn't actually know who Riko was referring to, and only after Aida and subsequent articles/materials confirmed it did we find out she, for some unexplained reason, calls Yoshiko that. A common theory is that it saves Riko from having to pick between "Yoshiko" and "Yohane" when addressing her. For what it's worth, Mari also calls Yoshiko "Yocchan" in print works and SIF, as did You in a recent Q&A.
Although the magazine articles are taken as a standalone continuity on their own, it is still ongoing and already poses the seemingly strange scenario of two people who, at first glance, are incompatible yet willingly spend time together on their own regularly rather than in a group setting. Now that they are in the same unit, GK-specific articles down the road will also show more of their thoughts on and interaction with each other. Furthermore, a closer look at their characterization would reveal that they both have traits that the other might appreciate or be attracted to.

Anyone got scans of the latest SID manga chapter with Nico at her part-time job? Just saw some phone pics and it looks pretty gay.

I adore the NozoRin SID chapter. There's a certain romantic charge between them, but rather than act on it or let it make things awkward, they turn it into fuel for a cuddly and affectionate friendship. There's something oddly tender about a serial molester like Nozomi choosing not to take advantage of the situation.

With Kanan's obliviousness, it's hard to imagine they would have gotten together unless Mari took the initiative to confess first.

On the other hand, Mari is implied in almost all media, not just in the anime, to be attracted to Kanan. And given what we know of Mari, can we say for sure she hadn't pursued Kanan before she left, or even already was successful?

Eh, I'm not saying that Hanamaru doesn't have a good voice, but Riko and Yoshiko for example get praised far more for their singing capabilities than her. If you've paid attention to the singles Lantis has released you'd understand.
The pleasantly sounding singers gets more parts in verses. Thrliing One Way for example has Hanamaru in the background. If she were a good singer like you claimed, that would be a major waste.
