Writer change memes aside, I'm fairly certain she was originally supposed to be more relevant, but they couldn't cram even more into the last third of the show.
The Deflowering of Cocona.
Iroha should paint this.
Yayaka would be too OP if they had her play an instrument.

I can't believe it.
All season long, I held out hope for her. She was so close. She nearly made it.
It was all for naught. In the end, she was ultimately made towear an outfit that had high heels.I fucking hate high heels so much. Seeing how she didn't have heels in her main combat outfit and fought with such beautifully-animated kicks made me so happy.
>>2262171
I'm with you sister. High heels are fucking ridiculous and a huge turn off. Which especially sucks because all the cool dyke characters seem to have them.
Cocona's mom's evil side was an underwhelming villain. Those episodes should have been about crazy adventures instead.
>>2262171
Her transformed costume doesn't have the gradients on either leg, so cosplayers must be punished in a different way.
>>2262277

>pretty much caused evil Mimi to exist
>imprisoned Papika
>tried to kill Yayaka
>run by Salt's tragically crazy father

I wish Asclepius had a bigger role in the plot than they did. It seems like they were built to be the main villains until Mimi showed up, and then the story just abandoned them.

Of course, she's a 30-year old woman that pretended to be a retard in order to seduce the teenage daughter of her unrequited love.
Flip Flappers is the most wonderfully predatory lesbian romance in recent memory. Made all the better because that teenager turned out to be gay as fuck and was apparently totally into being a hot meal for an older woman's substitute lust. The dog caught the rabbit and everybody ended up happily ever after.
Just look at the way she directly makes eye contact with the audience as she flies off to ravish her fresh little sex bunny. She knows exactly what she's accomplished. Her eyes say "this is mine now, viewer. I've won."

Papika would never throw away food!
>>2277035
I never got the impression that she was crazy about not throwing away food. Certainly nothing like Kyouko.
>>2276968
This seems backwards. I was under the impression Yayaka was the sporty girl everyone loved but was replaced in the eyes of the class by Papika. The first episode has Papika staring at Cocona through the gym window as Yayaka is cool on the court and the only other episode with bball focus I can recall has Papika usurping that role. It kind of played into the "she's taking away my place to belong" jealousy bit.
>>2277363
>the only other episode with bball focus I can recall has Papika usurping that role
When was this?
>>2277394
don't recall exactly, it was a one off scene that wasn't connected to anything else so I didn't easily find it just flip flapping though episodes. It might have just been an illusion but I'm fairly certain they pretty much used the basketball scene twice. It was one of the "all the classmates like Papika" scenes.
>>2277412
I think the scene your thinking of is in episode 2, and Papika is standing around being admired by the class while Yayaka is actually playing ball. I'm pretty sure we never see Papika play.
>>2277506
makes sense. I didn't look to hard there because Papika hadn't got the school uniform yet. I guess that scenes purpose was more to show the repetition of Cocona's life and how Papika disrupted that than the Papika takes Yayaka's place to belong subplot. Oops. Comics like that one still feel off to me.
>>2277615
>Comics like that one still feel off to me.
I don't really like the idea of Yayaka and Papika competing. They went through that in episode 9 and it was all very dramatic and emotional, but I'd like to think that their characters have worked past that whole issue, especially after episode 12.
It's especially kind of lame when they're competing to show off to Cocona like a pair of lovesick teenage boys. I never really got the impression of any of the characters in that love triangle being particularly masculine, and being shitty to one another over a sport game to try and display their athleticism to the blushing blue damsel just seems so jock-y. Doesn't really suit the characters.
Maybe I'm overthinking it. I just want to see more stuff with those 3 being friends and happy around one another.
>>2277636
It didn't seem to me like they were competing over Cocona, or at least Yayaka didn't. It looked to me like Papika was just another pair of ankles to break for Yayaka, and that Papika played that stupid gag with the basketball onigiri on Yayaka because they were friends.
I also thought Yayaka fit right in the middle of the "anime tomboy" spectrum in terms of masculinity. Not extremely masculine, but it was noticable. Speaks coarsely, has that bangs-pulled-back hairdo that reminds me of Ritsu from K-On.
Anyways, the purityfag in me is still conflicted that some of the Papika forms in episode 7 were male. I get that Cocona rejects all of them for the real Papika, but the scene where Cocona pulls her "ikemen" line still left a bad taste. After digging through the archives, I read that the director didn't want any of the Papika forms to be male, but the animator did it anyway.
>>2277725
Animator wanted them male, but Director said no-no because Yuniko's r/u/les of nature. So Animator made them all with some girly features. Like you can see delinquent papika's curves.

And while I'm at it is there some compilation of information on all the symbolism, references, and speculation in the show akin to the wiki for Madoka? Or maybe even videos made by youtube fags? I have a very large number of posts saved from while the show was airing but I'm missing a lotpartially due to never capping my own postsso it's becoming increasingly difficult to explain episodes and elements to other people who know to ask me about that kind of shit.
>>2278633
I suppose word-of-mouth has been doing its job.
There's somebody who was putting together a google doc "everything you need to know" sort of thing. Ask for it on /a/, though be warned it reads like a 1st year humanities paper and seems to be more or less the work of one person mixing their personal views with interview anecdotes rather than collecting the stuff discussed in the threads. Might still be a decent resource though since, as far as I know, it's the only such effort underway
>>2278633
I've been wondering if there's been any wiki/resource autism over Flip Flappers as well. Particularly a translation of the OST's song names, which are in something like 10 different languages. The Madoka wiki even has a track-by-track listing of which song is played at which point in time of the anime and movies.

The writing style is leaning towards more of a shill piece than a paper, which is unfortunately but necessary because FLFL needs that shilling.
>interview anecdotes
You don't call the interview anecdotes because that is the primary source and the hard facts from the horse's mouth necessary to backup any further speculation. Anyone could make shit up in the threads, only those backed by the primary source can be considered legit speculation.
I wrote the only part that could read like an undergrad psychology essay but no, it was mostly a compilation of verbatim citations of textbooks used by the director and putting symbols in juxtaposition to let you draw your own conclusions.
>>2278645
>Particularly a translation of the OST's song names, which are in something like 10 different languages. The Madoka wiki even has a track-by-track
FLFL doesn't intend to provoke autism in the audiences though. The symbols are actually symbols well tied to actual deeper narrative instead of wordplay and namedropping as in Madoka. Oshiyama wasn't intentionally obfuscating anything (a typical example of obfuscation would be the use of cryptic runes like in Madoka and LWA), he just eliminated spoonfeeding and made things not stand out from the background.
>>2278828
>You don't call the interview anecdotes because that is the primary source and the hard facts from the horse's mouth necessary to backup any further speculation. Anyone could make shit up in the threads, only those backed by the primary source can be considered legit speculation.
The text, or show in this case, is the primary source. Interviews and creator testimony are always secondary to the actual material itself.
The director saying "but I meant for it to be like Jung" is about as legitimate of an argument as someone saying "but I meant "fuck off faggot" in a positive way!" It doesn't substitute for an argument, and the strength of argument is what made most of the speculation in the airing threads interesting in the first place.
You're analyzing a piece of media here, not writing a history paper. The methodology is different, there is no objective truth or singular defining interpretation.
This looks promising.

He's just saying (paraphrasing here) that he took inspiration from the art of Dominique Ingres' painting "The Turkish Bath" and that it was supposed to contrast the impoverished village in order to create an image of wealth and power.
