From what I read, Bully truly believes (now) Su-ji's feelings for her is not romantic. So I think they still have a long way to go before any sex is on the table.
I would be traumatised af if I was bullied after I confess my honest feelings. Like girl, that is not okay. That past is not gonna be easy to overcome, so I hope author-nim gives it time to develop this couple or else it's just pure offending to Su-ji.

I agree with you here. Though I don't remember mention of Un-Jung hitting. If so, then hell no. I am also hoping that Un-Jung's role was more of a passive onlooker. However, I'm skeptical of this... to simply watch as your close friend gets bullied on your behalf is still bad. I mean, Un-Jung couldn't even console her or clarify things in private? As the translator, I will say that I hyphenate it out of preference.

When korean names are written, if they are saying the full name, the first "word" is usually the family name, so it is pretty important to distinguish so that if there are another character with same family name, you can immediately see it.

And sometimes, people reading the names will pronounce it wrong if it's together. Jeonghoon can be read as "Jeon ghoon" by an English speaker, which is wrong. So by hypenating it, they would say each part of name separately. "Jeong-Hoon".

Hypenating E-rae is because they are separate parts of the name, not just one.

It's a deep korean language thing..

Damn, I didn't expect it, but this backstory just continually warms me up to Yo-Ahn. She had difficulty comprehending and expressing emotion, so she tries her absolute best using sheer learned textbook knowledge. Like, to herself, that kiss she "demonstrated" on Cha-Yoon was probably an objective way to relay her feelings... but to Cha-Yoon (and me), it was smoooooth as fuck. Same thing as her trying to comfort Cha-Yoon in the hospital. "I don't know how to cheer you up, I've never read about this kind of situation. So I just grabbed everything I know that has brought people solace. Also, I'm gonna fuck you. That makes people feel good too. I halp."

This backstory is great because it provides a deeper understanding of Yo-Ahn (her struggles, her desire, her efforts). In contrast, it shows that Yo-Ahn is a much more complex and multi-layered individual than Cha-Yoon, who is just obstinate in all her endeavors. "Ballet. I love ballet. I do ballet. I hurt, I still ballet. Body is ruined, dgaf. I still ballet."

Also, Cha-Yoon has a tendency to run from her problems (the way she isolated herself from everyone) and refuse to confront her problems (dancing despite injury, driving despite pain, avoiding a meaningful conversation with Yo-Ahn, etc).

All that being said, I'm very excited to see the build-up to what tore Cha-Yoon and Yo-Ahn apart. When did she begin to show her "psychotic" tendencies to Cha-Yoon? Why does Cha-Yoon have so much vitriol towards her? Is it because of her feelings regarding ballet or is it because of romance?

Also, I think that hospital fuck is the same one we've seen referenced in previous chapters. They're both wearing white tops. When we first saw it, it came off psychotic because Cha-Yoon had tears in her eyes, fingernails scratching (I forgot who to whom), and Yo-Ahn's words seemed eerie. But if it's the same incident, then it's actually a more endearing fuck. She was crying because of ballet woes and Yo-Ahn was earnestly trying to make Cha-Yoon feel better.

But I could be mistaken, I'm too lazy to look up that chapter.

My speculation of what tore Yoon and Yo-ahn apart is that Yo-ahn had to leave/go abroad to pursue her ballet career and Yoon felt increasingly betrayed/resentful about everything. Yo-ahn doesn't seem like the type to cheat to me surprisingly.

Not sure if it's intentional symbolism, but early on, it was mentioned that ballet dancers with upward-turned eyes were more favorable. Su-Ji herself even mentions she prefers ballet dancers with upward eyes (when asked if Yo-Ahn was her favorite).

So the academy teacher was revealed to be a "failed dancer" who turned her efforts towards teaching/directing. She's for downward eyes. Likewise, so does Yo-Ahn, who only achieved her stardom because Cha-Yoon was out of the picture. I can't remember if Su-Ji's eyes turn downward (but she also was a "failed dancer").

It kind of makes me want to go back to old chapters and just observe each dancer's eyes.

Honestly, the more we find about their past, the more Yo-Ahn comes off as super intense, rather than legitimately villainous. I've only seen Yoon cry about ballet and I've seen Yo-Ahn cry about... Yoon. Shut, has Yo-Ahn ever been able to express sorrow like that before? My sympathies have successfully shifted towards Yo-Ahn. She struggled her ass off to cope with her alexthymia(sp?), to elevate herself in ballet (in Yoon's shadow nonetheless), and dealing with people's gossip about her. All I've gotten from Yoon is that she's extremely narrowly focused in ballet. So much that it led to her downfall. And even to this day, she still hasn't coped with it. In fact, she's actually rather spoiled.

I find myself rooting for Yo-Ahn's happiness moreso than Cha-Yoon/E-Rae's.

yup. at this point yoon and e-rae's relationship is on good ground so i don't think there's much more to explore right now. granted they do have some big issues in the background like e-rae not knowing much about yoon's past relationship with yoahn, e-rae needing to come clean to suji. the 1st one isn't that urgent imo and the 2nd issue is already unfolding.

yoahn's quite the tragic character as the story unfolds. her relationship with her mother seems very sad. in ch.35 we see their relationship in childhood being quite good but in the current chapter, we see that her mother was a substance abuser and so negligent that yoahn could just steal booze and cigarettes from her cupboard unnoticed. in the earlier chapters i remember yo-ahn saying "what's the point of visiting her, it's not like she's going to get better if i do". yoahn has a pretty terrible relationship with people that are not yoon or her senpai.

I definitely agree with you on this. In fact, I'm going to throw my hat in that this is what happened.

The story does seem to point towards a deep betrayal that leads to Cha-Yoon casting out Yo-Ahn. The numerous references to the play, Yo-Ahn's glances and background appearances relating to it, and the fact that Yo-Ahn had to "learn emotions," makes her extraordinarily perceptive. So, I feel certain that Yo-Ahn quickly caught on to Yoon and Teacher's plan.

Cha-Yoon views it as betrayal because, to her, it just looks like Yo-Ahn stole La Bayadere, won the competition, and gained fame. But the truth is that Yo-Ahn did it to save Cha-Yoon.

In the recent chapters where they sat down to talk, she actually says to Yo-Ahn that seeing someone else's face on the banners irritates her.

I think it's quite amazing how the tides have turned regarding Cha-Yoon and Yo-Ahn's respective characters. Did not exact this roller coaster of emotions and opinions.

It's only been 51 chapters. Dare I say this manhwa is deeper and more enjoyable than Fluttering Feelings? I like the pace a lot more, too. Even without the sex; I like how direct everyone is with their emotions. agreed. i was quite surprised myself. it went from just another case of "crazy psychotic ex can't let go and comes back to sabotage" but it's more like "emotionally challenged ex tries to fulfill promise to childhood love. i think yoahn's lack of feelings strangely make her the deepest character in the series. the fact that she has only felt love for yoon and is unable to move on, even though she desperately wants to as she said in previous chapters, makes her feelings to me the purest even though yoahn is far from pure. i do wonder how she started sleeping with senpai though? her lack of feelings to me might even extend to her not understanding the connection between sex and love? maybe she tried to find that feeling that she had with yoon again? that would explain why she asked manager to almost cosplay yoon.

mhm...i think they're both enjoyable in different ways (sounds like a cop out i know). with FF i feel like i'm more invested in their relationship whereas with this i feel more invested in the characters as people? in ff they go through one thing after another to the point where i got annoyed and felt like the series just dragged. i do like the pacing here better yea and the lack of boy drama is certainly welcome. I've thought this for a long time. In the sense that the characters in The Love Doctor are three dimensional to a degree that few other mangas - even those outside the yuri genre - have been able to successfully create. At different points, each of the main characters' actions have been shown to be driven by both good AND bad traits within them. No one is completely heroic or villainous. It's truly refreshing and I hope the author continues to develop a complex and rich story line. At this point, The Love Doctor has surpassed WDTFS as the mahnwa I look forward to in each update cycle.

Keep up the great discussion everybody. I don't have anything to add just yet that hasn't already been covered, but these are all great points you're bringing up.

TLD definitely has been a rollercoaster of emotions.

I don't think it will ever be possible to make a true comparison to FF if it is never finished. This is because the ending and final length can make such a huge impact on a story, and while we will find out that for TLD, we may never know for FF. (Also 3 couples vs. 2 well..... E-Rae is such a dope that if TLD had only one couple FF would win for me hands down.)

We don't even know how close either story is to the end to properly gauge pacing to the fullest extent, though I am hoping TLD isn't short because Su-Ji needs some major screentime love.

I don't know...I think people like TLD more because it's more "fictional" while FF gives more of a realistic feel. For example, Erae relationship with Doc is a little bit rushed comparing to real life "Asian lesbian". I think their courtship should have been extended somewhat longer before the bed scene. FF is considered to be slow, but I like that it focused a lot of their acceptance to their feeling and how it was led to that point as well as the fact it only focused on them as the main couple. Another example of TLD leaning on to a more "fictional", is the fact that all 6 characters turned out to be on the Yuri island (I mean I can't even have more than 5 gay friends in a normal environment). But all in all TLD is a good read still because I can get the feel from the characters and it's a good escape from real life due to its "fictional" aspect. FF still win though for me.

I feel like even the most dense person in the world would pick up on the obvious behavioral cues, body language, and romantic close calls they've had with each other. I know homosexuality is a tough topic to bring up when you think the other person is straight, but given what they've been through... I think the conversation wouldn't destroy them.

That's why I'm glad TLD didn't take that route, even though it could have. Cha-Yoon asked E-Rae, "You're sure about being gay? You're cool? You don't want any gay drama between us?" And E-Rae was just, "Nah, I'm cool. Gay's the way. Everything makes sense now."

I'm sure it's a more realistic story for people to struggle with their identity and society's acceptance (Su-Ji), but it's refreshing to see somebody so confident and accepting of their own feelings (E-Rae). Actually, I think TLD is a nice balance of different lesbian circumstances.

Cha-Yoon/Yo-Ahn: two young girls experiencing their first love... with each other! However they're both aware of its consequences in society and ballet, but deal with it together in secrecy.

Yo-Ahn/Manager: two women who are both confident in their sexuality (also aware of its consequences and act accordingly). One struggles with her past love and emotions and the other struggles with separating her personal and professional feelings.

Su-Ji/E-Rae: your classic "I think I'm gay for my best friend, but she's straight and I don't want to ruin things, so I'll pretend I'm straight and watch her from afar."

Su-Ji/Un-Jung: "I confessed my gay feelings to my best friend and now she hates me and so does everybody else who found out." It's still up for debate what Un-Jung's feelings are. Were her actions a self-defense mechanism that spiraled out of control or is she genuinely homophobic?

Cha-Yoon/E-Rae: confidently lesbian Yoon likes E-Rae, but assumes she's straight and willfully decides not to pursue it... easier said than done. E-Rae likes Yoon, but isn't sure because she's romantically-retarded. Fortunately for us, she's a go-getter, so the moment she finalizes her feelings, she just goes for it. She's still a bit retarded, but fortunately Yoon's lesbian game is strong and confident enough to propel the story.

Honestly FF was a loose and had no structure compared to TLD. Not to mention, some of the chapters are lazy with too much space. FF got to 76(?) chapters and I still sometimes confused everybody for Seol-A. I agree with the anon above you about the lack of progress after pivotal events (after No-Rae's cold shoulder, Seol-a's various emotional breakdowns, their numerous romantic close calls, etc). It often felt like huge things would happen, and then the next chapter would carry on without addressing what had previously happened or letting us see further reactions. TLD provides a lot of inner monologue/thoughts from all the characters and each chapter flows into the next.

If you reread TLD, it's like one long continuous day at times, whereas FF timeskips like crazy (the next chapter after their almost-kiss never mentioned it again and was already onto a new thing).

TLD is only on chapter 51 (still less than FF) and it's progressing faster and developing lots of back story. I adore FF, but it definitely dragged. Compare what development we had by chapter 51 in FF.

OP here, gonna give myself on the back for guessing correctly. this chapter really made me feel more sympathetic for yoahn. the fact that the entire school was exploitative and only saw yoon as a means to an end, another candidate to potentially win them more accolades without any care for her well being in the long-term is extremely ethically questionable. no one was willing to step in so yoahn had to do it. kinda hard to see how else she could've handled it given how short-sighted and stubborn yoon is plus the approaching deadline and the fact that practising more will also put yoon's health at risk and we've got a catch-22 on our hands.

I know some of y'all are bored of the flashbacks right now, but I love them. I'm loving the depth that's being given to Yo-Ahn, and I love finding out what happened between Cha-Yoon and Yo-Ahn. Looking forward to seeing how this is all resolved in the end... And I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with Suji and that bully. I'm finding myself more and more invested in the side characters.

I feel like her "internal homophobia" is due to the bullying and ridicule she received from coming out (which she took a big risk doing so). Society already considers homosexuality taboo, so when things got ugly, all the insecurities, doubts, and negative thoughts were exacerbated.

I feel like all the characters represent different lesbians. Suji represents the majority of closeted lesbians (confused, internalized shame), Erae is the dgaf about society "I am what I am" lesbian, Cha-Yoon/Yo-Ahn are also "I am what I am" lesbians but they are acutely aware of its repercussions in society.

Suji could also very well be bisexual though, but I feel like if her past was more positive, she probably would have fully embraced dating women.

I think Suji is trying to convince herself throughout the chapter that she is straight, but the more proof she gives, the more the reader can see the fault in her argument. When explaining that men chase after her and treat her like a queen, she essentially shows she is in a position of power in those relationships and that that is the primary reason why she doesn't mind their company. The guys who go out with Suji tell her that they like her show it. It makes her feel good to know that if she wants their love, she doesn't have to work too hard to get it. Her "moves" work on guys, so its easy to have success on that front. One can understand how having success at something- even something one doesn't particularly care for - can make one continue keep at it simply because it feels good to be good at something.

In contrast, E-Rae and Un-Jung were both oblivious to Suji's attraction to them. Even though she continually showed them affection, E-rae and Un-Jung just interpreted her actions as that of a good friend and basically "friend-zoned" her. Therefore, in the two situations where Suji actually had romantic feelings for someone; those people were women and she was not in a position of power. So from those experiences, Suji came to feel that in liking and attempting to have a romantic relationship with women, she was bound to have a difficult time where she'd have to do the chasing and even then, it would in no way guarantee her chances of success.

Overall, in trying to convince others that she is straight throughout the chapter, I believed it less and less. To me, Suji dates men because from her personal experience, its easier to do so. Whereas in showing interest in women, she has by and large experienced nothing but grief and heartbreak.
