I really liked the first two singles when Aqours seemed like it would have a more distinct sound. Step! Zero to One and Koi ni naritai AQUARIUM stand out really well and are probably my favorite Aqours songs.

Out of the anime inserts I think Daisuki dattara daijobu and yume de yozora are pretty weak and amazingly unmemorable. I enjoy mijuku dreamer, omoi yo hitotsu ni nare and mirai ticket, but part of that might be because of their story relevance and good live choreography. It was still kind of disappointing that all the anime inserts sound so similar. OP and ED are fine enough.

Non anime songs like Humming friend, sunshine pikapika ondo, daydream warrior, g senjou no cinderella and everything from Azalea and Guilty Kiss are pretty fucking great in my book. So I like about 2/3 of the songs and the rest are somewhere between passable and ok.

Have you ever thought about how weird it is that despite school idols being an incredibly big thing, muse are the only ones that are mentioned?

Like, realistically, in any music scene, things don't happen in a bubble, so not only should there (in theory) be other big artists coming to the front about the same time as the muse (in the same way Dylan, The Beach Boys, The Velvet Underground exploded on the scene at the same time as The Beatles) but also other artists immediately following after them in that five year gap as well.

More over, an artistic movement doesn't really work if someone isn't pushing it forward, nor does it really expand (Muse have already retired, so going forward, there's only so much hype their name can create alone.)

Basically, what I'm saying is that, by logic, there has to be other big, ambitious groups who are continuing to champion the idol movement.

Love Live isn't overly concerned with filling in the background details. Like it's pretty weird that after beating A-Rise in the prefecturals, we never hear anything about our heroines' competitors in the big finale.

If you like thinking about the show's implications, how about this: currently, talent agencies can justify taking all their idol's royalties and giving them a salary bacause they're the ones initially investing in their lessons and promotion and such. How would that work in a world where most prospective idols already have decent skills as performers and may already have a fanbase?

As for indie artists striking it out on their own, well, arguably the series reflects what's basically a reality these days. It's infinitely harder to get signed to a label than it was in the (early) 90s, so you basically have to still do a lot of the grunt work yourself.

Also, I didn't mind the first series' lack of detail because it was largely inconsequential and effort was generally made to tiptoe around unimportant details.

The problem is that the Sunshine isn't focused on the journey of the group. Instead a lot of the series is spent drawing comparisons between groups and one of the big themes of the series is how current art influences the next generation. Once you start placing Muse in a wider context (in this case, what is explicitly depicted to be an idol boom) it becomes very strange that they're the only ones talked about (aside A-Rise).

Like, look at the 90s, everyone knows who Nirvana are, you could even argue that they overhauled the direction of popular music and changed the face of music but what made alt-rock a cultural mainstay five years on, was that they were followed up by bands like Weezer/Foo Fighters/Smashing Pumpkins/Pearl Jam all who met similar success and continued to build on what, in some ways, Nirvana arguably started.

I mean, technically the first series only focuses on A-Rise too (so it arguably also exists in a bubble) but the difference is that only two characters in the series give a damn about the idols themselves (Honoka seems more interested in the concept rather than the specific group themselves) and further more, no-one ever really talks to Nico or Hanayo about other idol groups, so it's not actually an issue (though Nico's wall of DVDs suggests an awareness of other groups, so the idea of a wider movement is at least acknowledged).

I guess the thing with Love Live is that it wants to show idols doing what's appealing about idols and stay as far as possible from depicting what in reality happens behind the scenes, often to the point of absurdity: does Maki really handle all their arrangements, instruments, recording and mixing? Who makes and profits from µ's merchandise? How the hell did they stage a massive concert on a zero budget in the movie? Since they clearly aren't very interested in world building, it might have been a better idea to just make µ's and A-Rise into indie bands influenced by idol stuff, turn Love Live into a general band competition and never talk about sukuuru aidoru. Aqours could still be influenced by them, their dilemma being how to convince everyone they aren't just copying their predecessors' gimmicks.

There's only so many ways their lives can go after the way the anime ends. Now you're speaking my language. I understand that School Idol Project Season 1, Season 2, and the movie all take place over the course of a little less than a year, and that makes it a little tougher in writing a story set in that specific timeframe, and not just some sort of post µ's disbandment timeline, where you have so much more freedom. It just feels so much more.... I'm struggling to find the word. I want to use authentic, but that's not really it.

But back to the point though, better fics do use more originality. But trudging through LL fanfics to find that something good has taken it's toll, and it's made me tired of NicoMaki and Seagull. Especially since like I said before, it just feels like I'm reading the same thing over and over again. Though my tastes just aren't suited to the Love Live fanfiction market. I prefer fics where plot comes first, and the shipping is side piece. Just that in some of these stories, the authors are just too fast to pull the trigger on having the ship sail, and then they ruin the pacing of the story, then the shipping becomes priority to the plot. And then you get a ruined story.

One solution to the limited time frame I wish more writers took is to ignore the decision to disband and write about µ's taking their first steps as professional idols. That way you could both advance their stories and make the fic feel more connected to the original.

This is pretty inherent in most fanfiction, for most fandoms in general. It goes hand in hand, really.

I understand wanting "more" out of fics, certainly. But on the other hand, I'd argue that almost a majority of fic writers do it first and foremost for shipping/pairing - for better or worse. I won't be hypocritical; it's why I started too.

With LL, however, you also have a good set up inherently for the most boring, but most popular, AU - high school AU. A big part of LL is the fact that they're "school" idols. This isn't im@s, where that's something we rarely, if ever, saw. Of course fic authors are going to take advantage of that part of the set up.

Would it be interesting to see more fics about the idol part, or about their futures (which there are actually more of than one might expect)? Sure. But by the very nature of fanfiction and LL in general the vast majority will be shipping fics that cut those out.

I've never watched anything related to Love Live but from a cursory glance it seems like Sunshine isn't talked about nearly as much as the original series. Is that because Sunshine is shit or did interest just wane really quickly?

Season 1 of Love Live: Sunshine was positively atrocious.

As characters, the Aqours girls lack the character depth and focus that µ's gave their girls in SiP (With the exception of Hanayo. Fuck you, Sunrise). While Sunshine is basically "The Chika Show" and it doesn't give much of a reason to actually care about any of the girls outside of Chika, and to a much lesser extent, Riko and You.

There's a ton of other Aqours related material coming out at once so I see a lot of people just discussing that. Folks in my friend group get super excited as soon as we discuss possible themes and plots in a potential S2 of Sunshine, so I doubt interest has waned /that/ much.

Overall, Sunshine was far better written than S1 of the anime, and had better character depth as well. I just hope S2 gives Ruby more of a personality and explores the depth of Ruby and Hanamaru's friendship a bit more. Going from side materials like the SID, Hanamaru is super attached to Ruby something that YoshiMaru shippers seem to conveniently ignore.

A few reasons that I think may explain it (coming from someone who liked Sunshine a lot)

>People really loved, and are still attached to, the old cast.
They were something really special, and the show itself was strongly followed for the full 3 years they were relevant. (IM@S also has this issue in regards to the well-loved 765 girls in comparison to the CG girls)

Nothing wrong with referencing here and there but there were a bunch of shout outs, and the plot hit too many of the same points

Besides the one episode where each girl joined, any of the (few) character arcs never felt fully connected to the group and its struggles as idols. Compare Mari's to Kotori's arc in S1

Overall the show was stronger in some senses and weaker than others, but I think ultimately the first point is the real reason discussion on Sunshine is less than it was for LL!.

The plot is really nothing special in Love Live in general and can devolve to dumb forced drama. It's the character interactions that really drive it and Sunshine was fantastic at that.

It's what made Season 2 of the original group so much better than Season 1. The lack of a plot really helped it focus more on cute girls being cute to each other.

On a plus, Sunshine seems to great praised for it's greater character development (well for Chika and Riko mainly). Chika is liked for not lashing out and getting depressed when things did not go her way. Riko got over her stage fright and managed to perform on stage.

On the other hand, Sunshine has never been able to shake off the label that it's just LL rehashed. Chika is similar to Honoka. Dia tried to be Eli at first. You, like Kotori is that supportive friend. The fact that they dropped the whole 'save the school' plot mid-season did not help it's cause either. It's likely that at least 10 or more people did not want to watch the same show again and hence avoided Sunshine.

At some points, the anime almost seem to be making a meta commentary about how Aqours was living under the shadow of μ's with Ep 12 literally being a delayed lesson about how Aqours should 'be themselves.'

This then leads to another issue in that it came extremely late in the season. At that point, you can only wonder how Aqours is different and unique from Love Live? There are some differences. Eli did not speak blatant Engrish. The old cast arguably did not have a Yoshiko.

However in the overall plot direction, the anime seems to be heading in the same direction. Aqours goes to the Love Live, they will most likely win it and that somehow will boost enrollment.

I think Sunshine was ultimately pretty clever in its treatment of those two. Dia is probably consciously trying to act like Eli, and then it turns out she isn't much like her at all. You is an unselfish supportive friend who ends up hurt because Chika is drifting away and she's in love with her.

I think Sunshine has lots of interesting and original things going on, but unfortunately they decided to emphasize all the similarities and spent way too much time talking about how awesome the old cast was.

It's basically because if they're going to replace the old girls, they might as well do something new with a new cast or put a different spin on things. As it is I think a few people have a feeling of "why retire the old cast if you're just going to repeat a lot of archetypes and plot points?" People like the old girls a lot (clearly) and would love to keep seeing them.

I'm mainly just playing devils advocate here since I like LLS perfectly fine. But I do sort of think it feels like, and this is going to be such a great reference, Dark Souls 2 in a few ways. A sequel/continuation that seemingly wants to try new things, but then can't help but make reference and recreate what came before and so it ends up stuck in a weird limbo and doesn't particularly succeed well at anything specific. It isn't bad, but you can't help but wish they'd just commit to changing things up.

Love Live was awesome because it was a show about a bunch of characters who felt vaguely human for a change. Yes, it's still relatively upbeat and doesn't dwell overbearingly on the flaws of each character but they do exist and most of the drama that ensues stems from the flaws of the characters themselves (rather than the external world).

In that sense, the series itself already has a leg up over the competition because the characters (having such defined personalities), become someone you identify with rather than simply something you yearn for. I think the fact that the series has managed to appeal to an audience outwith the core "moe consuming" demographic attests to this much.

Inversely, the problem with LLS was that a lot of time was wasted on three girls who (at that point) hadn't joined the group, who seemed to spend most of their time just acting like right cunts, taking passive aggressive digs at each other.

Plus, the third year angst just isn't all that compelling. Nico and Eli are sad and emotionally shut off because of past failures, and Nozomi had a crappy childhood. The KanaMariDia drama is about all of them being good friends and bad communicators, which is much less compelling and beliavable. They should have just gone with them choking on stage instead of pretending.

The YouChikaRiko drama worked much better, because it was believable, rooted in their characters and developed calmly over several episodes.

It's pretty cute, and I feel like it got a lot of subtext in the first few episodes of the show only to fall by the wayside by the time Yoshiko's own episode came along. Either way, I feel like it has a lot of potential, what with Ruby thinking the Yohane stuff is unironically cool and Yoshiko struggling really hard to keep up a cool front (not used to any response other than eye-rolling) and Yoshiko trying to win Dia's approval.

Sunshine's got its flaws, but it's off to a better start than µ's was at this point in its career. I think it's just a matter of µ's having six years of material under their belts while Aqours has less than two. If this franchise lasts long enough to spawn a third generation, I'm sure Aqours will get a lot more discussion than this hypothetical third generation during its first couple of years.

So I'm rewatching the original series. In light of her later characterization as the nicest girl in the world, It's pretty cute how Rin turns territorial and bitchy when she sees Maki talking with Hanayo in episode 4.

Yoshiko having to deal with over protect Dia is one of the reason I enjoy it so much.

After all if say Hanamaru started to court Ruby, Dia wouldn't mind, since Hanamaru is clearly a upstanding figure of society, while Yoshiko is clearly not what Dia defines as sociably acceptable.

Also not saying Ruby goes to Yoshiko to rebel against her overprotective sister, I just like the comedic aspect of Dia trying to stop Ruby and Yoshiko getting together, only to be foiled by everybody and having to accept her sister has fallen for a Fallen Angel.

Maru-chan and I actually have rather different taste in books--- As one can tell, she prefers comparatively serious literary fiction, while I like books written by female authors. Things written from a female perspective. For better or worse there's a lot more "confusion" or wiggle room with the ships this season. It's hard to pick any "canon" ships like OG LL had. Nearly every girl has multiple, well-supported ships.

I think I'd prefer less confusion, even if my favorite Sunshine ship (pic related) tends to be challenged by RubyMaru

I agree, and it seems like the wiggle room is really prominent among the third years. All three KanaMari/KanaDia/DiaMari work with their own charms (granted the last one is a bit weird but it does work sometimes) and I can't choose which one is "the one".

We could go for the O3P route but that just doesn't feel the same.
