For many people into this fetish, there's also an aspect of pain being as deep and all encompassing as an emotion. Similarly, some of us, myself included, feel terrible on a normal basis, or a desire hurt because at least it's something different than feeling numb.

Serious answer? Personally it's about empathy for bodily sensation. I don't feel sexually aroused at it, and I don't want the characters I like to get physically hurt - but the world is a dangerous place, and people get hurt all the time, so being able to relate to those things is very powerful. Seeing characters dealing with pain, wounds, scars, or being comforted, healed, cared for, etc, those are all very powerful things.

We don't really get exposed to a lot of visual proof of physical pain in everyday life, unless we suffer from something or live with somebody who does, so often fiction is the only place to come across it in such depth. And it has all the more impact if it's happening to a character we care about.

It hurts to see, and to think about, you don't want it to happen, but you can't look away because it speaks to all your own primal fears about your body and the experience of being wounded.

Maybe I'm weird - I lost a finger when I was four and also suffered a serious fracture at the same age, so empathy for pain and wounding is pretty important for me.

For a long time I thought I was one of the only ones.

I would look up guro stuff in order to find the 1 in 10 that was both well drawn and not excessive - more about the futile suffering, the hurt and sadness of the victim more than anything else. It was only recently that I found that other people did this, and that what I was looking for was a different tag on things.

Regardless, I empathize more with pain and sadness than with happiness, which I believe is what draws many of us to like this kind of thing.
