In 2009 "I kissed a girl" got released. My sister and I stumbled upon an AMV made to this exact song that used scenes from various yuri anime, among them Strawberry Panic. It was surreal and controversial, anime lesbians. Out of sheer curiosity we decided to watch Strawberry Panic, ended up marathoning it. We liked how melodramatic and cheesy it was, and the atmosphere was very unique compared to other anime I'd watched. Although that was my first yuri experience I didn't really feel attracted to the genre. What really made me love yuri was K-on and Mio and Ritsu. I went crazy over them. I happened to see some yuri fanart of them and it snowballed from there.

Sailor Moon anime which ironically had a real yuri couple in it even if in my country they were called cousins in initial mid 90s release.

It got me hooked for real and made me look first time for "cartoon lesbian sex" in Netscape Navigator browser, I never imagined how that would open my mind and how much of such content there were already on my poor 56k old modem connection, loading the bigger pics was a torture and I had to reset my computer so many times so my parents couldn't see that.

As for first non-yuri anime where I shipped girls together and found their interactions better than with guys?
There was some really old 80s, if I recall right, anime about female volleyball team and oh boy how much I shipped some girls in it despite all of them being straight and got bf during the anime run, but at that time I even didn't know that was anime and what even yuri was.

Thanks to that tomboyish sword girl and her master, and then I started thinking how nice it would be if Nodoka and Yue are a couple. The series was a total shitshow tho. I'm glad I aborted before the mangaka made that horrible ending to the point some Shaft people and that "Sayonara, Zetsubou-sensei" guy made fun of him. He now tries to comeback to the spotlight with a sorta continuation of Negima, but I hope it crash and burn.

The first yuri I ever read was Yellow Drops, and I fell in love with it completely, and quickly read the rest of the series. It'd be nice to see more work about those two in the future. Futari Gohan is a cute read too.

Getting into yuri helped me realize that I am a lesbian,and helped me recognise the feelings I've had since childhood and I've felt a lot happier in myself since. I've found love too.

I'm not alone, it's nice to know.

That's your problem. The males in KS are either plot devices or supporting characters, never going beyond that. And even if you see a couple of episodes you cannot grasp how important the female MCs are to each other in such time, you need to see 3/4 of the first season at least. And goggles are unnecessary, even my mother picked up on it.

Even if people dare to say KS isn't yuri it doesn't change the fact that it was my starting point, my OTP, my revelation or whatever shit you wanna call it- everything originated there: in the beginning there was Layla and Sora. They soared above the trapeze and were gay for each other. So gay that they could jump from the trapeze midair, do some aerial hand holding floating around for 5 minutes and go back to their own trapezes. And it was beautiful.

The mecha mikos, the soeurs and the lesbo assassins showed up later. Like, next year later, because after 2003-2004 I was like a hound after the tiniest bit of yuri, no matter the source.

It was a wild time.

You need 3/4 to grasp the relationship they have, the rest of the seasons (for there were 2) are dedicated to the circus and how the relationship between Layla and Sora always affects everyone else one way or another, it remains unchallenged. Hell, just so people don't forget at the start of the second season they do another gay-ass stunt complete with leathers and whips, and the end of the season closes with *another* maneuver where Layla goes all "to make u an angel I'll be ur demon".

And don't even get me started on the OVA. It was the gayest piece of shit, what with Layla moping around because she couldn't have Sora around 24/7.

There are only two het couples in KS (Sarah/Kalos and policeman/doctor but both are established early on and receive very little screentime. Ken never goes beyond the friendzone with Sora, and there are no romantic plotlines for any other female characters. It's prime goggling material.

Sailor Moon was the "breakout" anime for me, but the seeds of the lilies weren't properly planted until Tenchi Muyo! rolled around, as odd as that sounds.

I began with yuri shipping in Kill la Kill (Satsuki x Ryuko). AnR first actual yuri anime/manga so I'm not sure which one.

Started with Negima i guess. Konoka/Setsuna and Nodoka/Yue made my heart dokidoki but the first real yuri work i watched was Utena. Nothing since has captured that exact perfect everything, but i still like it.
