I think it's stupid and useless comparing series, each one has its good and bad points, but YagaKimi definitely outclasses Citrus in portraying yuri on the covers that is the first method to attract new readers who don't know the title.

In an interview Nakatani said that she choose to portray the cover in a way that someone would look at it and tell it was yuri, because the manga is actually published in a shounen magazine.
Generally speaking, there's no need to do such a thing for a story that gets published in a yuri magazine, because the reader would assume that it's indeed yuri since it contains the YH title on the cover.

You don't get the main purpose of a cover. It must get your attention immediately, especially in Japan where there are thousand of manga with always the same pattern of covers. The cover must attract you, make you think it looks interesting and make you pick it up.
In the moment you stop, pick it up and read "yuri hime" on it, it already got your attention. Actually there is not even written "yuri hime" but just "yh comics", you have to read the obi (if there is) or the plot in the back to find out it's yuri.
If I'm in a comic shop and I see these covers where just a girl, often barely dressed, is looking at me, I don't give a little bit of attention to them. I've bought them only because I already knew they were (supposed to be) yuri.
The fact yuri is a niche genre is a weakness but also a strong point, there isn't that many series so we end up buying everything as soon as we see a cover with two girls in a clear gay mood, I repeat, they should push it, not hide it.

Also ff I don't remember it wrongly YagaKimi actually made it into the list of tankoubon with best cover/book binding in last year. So maybe cover can indeed contribute some parts to the success of a manga. I personally also dig up anything with two girls in the premise or promo art. And both Citrus and YagaKimi deliver.
