This is a story of what happened between Brave Witches 7th and 8th episodes.

December 26th - the day after Saturnalia.
After resupplying the 502nd Joint Fighter Wing, Pilot Officer Eila Ilmatar Juutilainen and Lieutenant Sanya V. Litvyak decide to stay at the Petersburg base on break until the new year.
But, while the two have fun spending time with the members of the 502nd, news of a Neuroi attack comes in.

"Eila-san, you're really fired up!"
"Hikari, this is how you dodge an attack."
"Do you remember the first time we flew through the night sky with Yoshika-chan?"

Now, two original members of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing team up with the 502nd Joint Fighter Wing on a common front and "The Grand Petersburg Strategy" unfolds!!

I don't see why the shows issues is all pinned on Hikari. She's the the best part of the show, and the only one going through an interesting arc. HikarixNao is the only ship I was invested in as it was actually being developed on screen.

The show real issue is how it plays safe, since I could predict what's happening every step of the way. Still I found plot was still better the SW season 1, just with less gay.

It's weird how much Hikari is disliked around here. I can understand the hate toward Yoshika for her Mary-Sue aspects, but I thought Hikari was a pretty good protagonist.

The problem is the lack of yuri (like developing her relationship with Kanno further), but that's not the fault of the characters. They could have easily written them into being lovers and it would have been believable for me.

To add to that, the highest character moment of Yoshika for me was when she loses all her powers but still throws herself into mortal danger in the movie. There's something really admirable about such reckless (if stupid) heroics. Of course the movie destroys that entirely by giving her epic-tier powers at the end, but I still liked the scenes leading up to it.

Hikari is like that, except all the time. She's got barely any power to speak of, but she's just a brave idiot who refuses to give up and has the stamina to go with it.

The fact that she didn't get more yuri in the show is terrible, but I still like her.

Bullshit. The character focus episodes did focus on the 502. Hikari was there, but she only served as the audience surrogate. The problem is the they didn't do anything interesting with them other than "this my character quirk" with very little payoff in future episodes. Hikari had nothing to do with that, it was the writing playing safe and not trying anything new.

Just finished this series so I guess I'll throw my opinion into the mix.

I definitely feel that it wasn't as good as the first two seasons and the blame largely lies with how poorly a lot of the characters were handled. The fact that they chose to focus so much on Hikari was very detrimental to the rest of the cast aside from Kanno and possibly Nipa who were the closest to her and got some good moments with her.

Rossman and Krupinski had some good moments but I felt that they could have had more of it sprinkled throughout. Meanwhile, Rall ,Sadako, Pokryshkin, and Georgette were practically invisible.

I was really looking forward to Takumi since I thought it would be cool to see sisters interacting in the same unit, so I was kind of disappointed that they mainly used her as an obstacle for Hikari's development.

I feel like a lot of the character episodes that we got that weren't about Hikari were kind of lame. Was anyone really engrossed with whether or not Pokryshkin felt sentimental about the empty town? I believe they did the whole"showing a character loves their home" thing a lot better with Lucchini.

Sacrificing the screen time of the others for one character's development and for more dramatic elements may have worked if they wanted to do something more unique with the series' rather interesting world and lore, but its been pretty firmly established that Strike Witches is a franchise more about characters and the plot is mostly an excuse, so it just ended up being yet another season about destroying a Neuroi nest.

After finishing the original Strike Witches I eagerly wanted more, and sought to find all of the supplementary stories and character info that I could, but I can't say I would have done the same if Brave Witches had been my introduction to the series.

Also, most importantly, needed more yuri.

I was originally attracted to this series because I loved Takami's character design with her headwings and soft expression, so imagine how interested I was in the rest of the series after she was removed after the second episode. Definitely agree about Georgette and Sadoko, unless something was being cooked or healed they were stuffed in a cabinet somewhere, just as you said. I would've liked to hear more about Rall's past injury, myself, even as just a half-episode flashback.

The Witches franchise can't seem to break away from the trope of throwing a rookie into the mix as a way to get the rest of the cast to open up, probably because it does work somewhat, but I'd much rather see an already-established cast like Africa Korps or Red Pants Squad for delicious Dom and Jane yuri.

Worse in that the neuroi designs went from being based on experimental aircraft to just lazy mechanical alien designs. About the same in regards to how an interesting premise is let down by poor storytelling and awful action scenes.

Brave Witches was not as good as I hoped.
The show lacked the relationship chemistry between characters and it feels like the show purposely avoided all the possibilities of Nipa x Sasha moments outside of episode 6, not even the last episode... They could have at least let Sasha get princess carried by Nipa!(or the other way around works too)
That aside, the show doesn't make much World Witches cameos since episode 1; they don't even mention other materials like the manga where Nipa met Eila and Sanya; and it makes no sense for Hikari to join Brave Witches in the end, she's going to have to be gone by the time the movie started or else how else are the authors going to explain her absence in the movie, because if they just say "she was off screen at the moment", that would be the laziest writing of all times.
