Depends what you consider interesting. I wouldn't say they contain any revelations about the worlds within the stories (except who has the biggest breasts). They're more notes on what the author had in mind when he wrote them. For example: He says he wrote Showcase Girl as a microcosm of his perspective as a writer -- an outsider watching girls play around in little glass boxes. I like that kind of trivia, but it's not critical to a reader's understanding of the story.

Unfortunately I don't think there's an official translation for that poem (宮沢賢治「百合を掘る」), and I haven't the faintest clue how to translate it. Especially かたぎつ, what the hell is かたぎつ? I haven't looked at the full work, but I'd guess the point of including it is probably just that the poem involves "lily digging".

Yeah, it bothered me enough that I did a bunch of googling, and it seems like it might be an archaic version of ~たり~たり. So 担ぐ・肩ぐ fits, as it would become (かた)ぎつ.

Found a transcription of the poem, which helps seperate the dialogue a bit more. First verse goes as such:

I really don't know about 百合を掘ると. I tried googling the use of verb+to in classical writing but couldn't find enough to make sense of it. I think in modern it would be something like "when digging for lilies...".

I think ひと恋ひ is 人恋しい (yearning for human contact) but I'm not entirely sure what the て adds to it (I don't think it's a conjugation). The usage that seems most fitting to me is [~のに ~ても］ but there were a lot of possibilities. The examples I found for ば endings led me to think that 林に行けば might be closer to 林に行くと, which would make the line sth like 人恋しいのに、林に行くと and I'm not sure how you'd translate that without linking to the next line.

I think くるほしく might be 狂ほしく and うつりゆれたる is probably 写り揺れたる (たる can apparently be present or perfect tense?). So:

Depending on what software you are using, you may be able to set it so you can see the information about the pixel which your mouse cursor is above so that you can tell whether it's properly white or not. In GIMP for example you can find such an option under windows/dockable something. If you look at your monitor from a lower point of view the difference should become more apparent by eye for a quick check.

All translation team I've been in always implement some sort of double checking system. It's not because everyone is shit in that team, it's because people tend to make mistake. Additionally, translation isn't exactly easy and another's opinion can always help to improve.

You might think I'm defending Googled Anon, and I do notice that some of the TL can be spotty, but that's exactly why double checking is useful. If you really think you're that much better, how about you try translating one of the same thing Googled Anon did and let people see how good your translation is? Heck, I would even gladly typeset your translation if it's really great.

Otherwise, stop with the rant. Giving useful criticism is good, but telling people "shipping cancer", "fanbase", and ranting will not do any good for anyone in this thread.

Using levels is an easy way. Create a Photoshop Action (Alt+F9). Record yourself hitting Ctrl+L, moving the black slider all the way to the right (making everything darker) and hitting OK. Save and map to a function key.

Now you can hit that key to instantly turn even the faintest light grays to white. You still have to ctrl+z and do the editing "blind", but that action can instantly check if there's anything you missed.

It's basically as you say. Troll edits can stay for months on end if translators aren't around to point out the error or fix it. As a regular danbooru translator, I say that the site has been incredibly fortunate that there are enough people who understand japanese and these people care about what is translated on the site to maintain a high quality and keep out troll edits.

You're free to do it as an alternate scanlation if you feel like it. The one that's up there seems pretty much bare minimum (dialogue is mostly 'gist of it', RAWs unlevelled, etc).

I have a question for editors. If you were to edit some chapter from the YH digital version, this page for example, would you still apply levels? If so, how much?

Probably would've made sense to ask this in the current thread, but generally you don't need to do anything with digital raws as they are already in their intended levels.

though sometimes I see that digital raws from dlsite aren't leveled properly, meaning that I usually have to add some black (~8) and white (~248). You should always look first. That page looks fine, but there's a lot of jpg artifacts which can be lowered by leveling a bit more white. But it's up to the editor in the end.
