So the first bit of representation RT gives the fandom is a one-shot character that exists entirely for exposition during a one-shot fight that has zero long term impact on the primary story and even then, it's in the form of a non-canon tumblr post from a VA.

Even if this works out in the coming episodes this will always be a bit disappointing.

Maybe I'm just prone to medicalising these things because I'm doing a relevant degree but I really can't see it as anything else. Accepting it's just wrong but calling people inherently flawed just feels like telling the clinically depressed to "just get over it".

In time I hope all these identity disorders can have their treatments codified and accepted by the relevant authorities. Just now it almost feels like there's a danger to try and call someone with the condition unwell least to get your head ripped off for bigotry.

Literally any generic background character could be gay, bi, or what have you. But so as long as they remain a background character or just a one-shot it's all the same. It doesn't mean anything.

Non-canon sources about characters that have zero meaningful impact on the show just aren't good enough. Especially if RT keeps in enough plausible deniability for fans to reject it if it bothers them. There's no on screen proof so it might as well as just be fanon.

I don't want to make it sound like I'm being pushing. I would have been cool with a same-sex couple at the dance in volume 2, but non-canon sources are just bullshit that lets artists check off that target demographic without actually having to put in any real work or risk. And it was Monty and co. that acknowledged their intentions to have LGBTQ characters in their show several times now. If they didn't really mean it they should have just given the standard 'keep watching' response.

The lack of self-awareness in here is impressive.

Them canonizing useless characters like that isn't negative or really even positive in my eyes. It just is. I suppose that minorities getting representation in trivial ways is better than nothing, but still. It just doesn't seem like it matters at all either way.

My main point of contention is that they confirmed this representation in interviews several times now. Even Monty himself has stated it would or at least it would likely happen. This started way back in Volume 1 (maybe early Volume 2 I don't quite remember).

Yet there has been nothing done so far and they only keep confirming it. I wouldn't take such issue with it if they didn't confirm it and just said "watch and see," but they didn't. As I wrote before, I would have been good with just some background same-sex partners at the dance or something. Perhaps there is a bit of overreaction going on here, but it remains disappointing. Especially as it looks less and less likely that any of the /u/ pairs are gonna pan out. Even Bumblebee seems to have gotten knocked down a bit.

The most "fluff" way I could imagine it reasonably happening would be if at some point, Salem were to betray Cinder, killing Emerald in the process (this would be necessary to make room for Ruby, and quite easy, since I'd imagine Emerald would be willing to step in front of a strike/projectile/whatever to try and save Cinder).

Cinder would be left for dead her mask broken and clothing torn a bit, RNJR or whoever Ruby is with at the time would happen upon her. Everyone's first reaction upon seeing her again would be anger and trying to rush in to finish her off, Ruby would get there first because she's fast and then falter as she sees the scars Cinder has and realizes from the last moment she remembers on Beacon tower that she caused all this damage to another person.

Ruby would then stop NJR from killing Cinder and the guilt would drive her to convince them to take her prisoner and treat her wounds "for information" or some other excuse to mask the fact that she just can't bear to let this person she disfigured die. Cinder would wake up after a day or two, but the "fire" (or I guess more like smoldering in V4) part of her character would be gone, replaced by a more ash like, just waiting for death one. There'd be angst over Cinder ignoring NJR's interrogations or smiling to goad them into killing her, and Ruby continually standing in their way to the point of ending up emotionally isolated from her teammates.

She'd end talking to Cinder while nursing/redressing her wounds or feeding her, just about small things, her childhood and the like, perhaps questions that would go pretty much unanswered. Every time Ruby would treat her or help wipe her down, she'd see the scars again and be forced to remember what she did, the guilt building up until finally, she'd break down, crying and apologizing.

Cinder would be silent at first, but then her her croaky whisper, she'd start off with something like "I didn't have dog, or a sister, or parents..." and continue on to tell Ruby the story of her abusive childhood as Cinderella and her struggles and fight to survive after she escaped, how she found Salem and so on, until she'd get bitter about being betrayed. They'd start to talk now and then about unimportant things while Cinder continued to recover. She'd whatever small information she has, probably not anything helpful because there's no way for a small team to attack Grimm-land. NJR would back off a bit but still resent her.

The two would get a little closer, once Cinder could walk again, she'd happen upon Ruby training and comment on her form, give her pointers and tips. Ruby's youthful naievty would grow on her, and Cinder's darker, more mature "cool" factor would grow on Ruby, who'd become more and more self conscious around her; getting flustered when Cinder would step in and touch her to adjust her stance or what-not. They'd end up locking eyes now and then with the increasing tension until one day Ruby would give in and kiss her and Cinder would kiss her back. They'd try to keep it quiet, because NJR still hate Cinder, but would get caught, fostering renewed anger at Cinder for Pyrrha's death, and accusations of betrayal towards Ruby.

Someone (Jaune?) would go to attack Cinder who's still listless and resigned enough to not try and defend and Ruby would step in prepared to fight them. The party might split up, or argue it out, or decide that Salem is the real issue. Cinder would start to smolder into an ember again and decide to take up her weapon for the first time in months for the sake of defending Ruby on whatever path she wants to follow.

And so on.

I could see some interesting, alternate, more dark/unhealthy ways to go about the pairing post fall of beacon as well.

I wonder if there's a fic out there where her father is pressuring her to marry, so in a fit of anger she tells him she'll just marry a peasant, and she finds the poorest, least classy, most unacceptable girl she can think of: Ruby. And then she starts falling for her afterwards, of course.
