What do you think the flagship yuri anime is?

KnM is the flagship anime for normal yuri fans.

Utena for people who are desperate for "mainstream" anime approval

Mai-Hime/Otome for actual mainstream anime fans.

KnM for "Yuri with Plot" (even though I think Simoun was much better for that, it didn't have nearly the popular impact), and Strawberry Panic for "Pure Yuri"

KnM was in your face yuri with plot. It was not bashful about what the main topic of the series was and that's what made it amazing.

It's way, way better then everything in Kannazuki No Miko.

Especially all the rapists get what they deserve.

If we're arguing about maximum yuri-ness, surely Strawberry Panic would win - Sakura Trick is super yuri too but not as popular for sure so it's overall lower impact. If we're arguing most recognizable/popular, I dunno. The two most popularly recognizable shows might be Marimite or Madoka, but neither is 'really' yuri with full romance or anything. You could argue Utena too. 'Best' is just purely subjective so no point in arguing that but Simoun is my favorite.

That said I only like Mai Hime of the older fan-favorites to be honest - MariMite is a fine show but it's way to subtext to count as yuri for me to be honest, I really didn't get into KnM or StoPani at all and never finished either.

since its being discussed here, is it true that simoun has a woman whose a genuine pedo and engages in /ll/? if so going to bump it to the top of my backlog.

Sakura Trick could have been like the new Strawberry Panic, but then they made it that the main girls didn't even recognize their feelings as romantic in the end, and IMO that soured everything.

Simoun just wasn't executed that well. It could have been really great. The whole Mamina scene for example just induced zero emotion in me with how the indicidual actions played out on screen, like it was the directors first gig.

The reused voice actors were also really jarring.

KnM had some weak aspects, but the romance stayed consistent and I welcome the fact that it pulled no punches in how it portrayed Chikane's emotions. It wasn't cute, pure or try to keep it subtle, it was just completely explicit in portraying a girl in love and her struggles with the fact that she was in love with another girl who had an asskicking "boyfriend". And that boy, at the time, was everything she couldn't be.

*OP* I was thinking flagship not as the quality of the anime but the popularity of it. I agree, Simoun is far better than Kannazuki No Miko, but it is not very well known.
