As much subtext is there in that scene, Marimite S1 was even gayer.

And I'm not talking just subtext either. Even setting aside Sei's tragic lesbian backstory, there's that episode where Shizuki Kanina confesses to Sei that she's been in love with her for two years and Sei gives her a farewell kiss.
>>
>>2173863
>there's no denying its effect on the yuri genre
Which is not exactly a compliment. Sure, it helped make yuri more mainstream, at least for a certain value of "mainstream." But it also helped crystallize one of the more frustrating aspect of yuri today: ambiguity being a desired trait of a mainstream yuri work.

I do not think Marimite is responsible for it. The whole "keep it subtext" thing comes from a general fear of doing full romance work. It is not like yuri is the only thing that suffers from the "will they get together some day?" curse.

Is yuri getting better or worse?
>>
>>2174099
Ignoring the more critical anons with varying definitions of the term 'yuri', I'd say it's been pretty darn good these past few years.
>>
>>2173870
>>2173921
>expecting explicit lesbian relationship in a christian anime about catholic schoolgirls
>>
>>2174099
I believe it has improved. We have been getting a few explicit titles in quick succession such as Sakura Trick, Valkyria Drive and that bear thing, while being flooded with franchises that might not be outright girl on girl actions but ones which are extremely yuri friendly have no males in sight. I'm certainly picking up more shows for yuri only than I did seven years ago when I started consuming the media. Manga scanlation is also in a good shape, there are numerous releases I'm looking forward to all the time. While there still are disappointments and out of the blue het endings, it's a great time to be a yuri fan. Sure, people will complain about stuff, but that's nothing new, especially when it would take a quick glance at the source material to adjust expectations.
>>
>>2174099
I would have killed to have had yuri like we have now when I first got into it. Back when Yamibou was one of the top recommendations.

But anons will continue to bitch and moan their exact tastes are not catered to.
>>
>>2174099
>Is yuri getting better or worse?

It's definitely better with a good number of yuri manga titles and ESPECIALLY yuri VNs coming out of the wood works. Not to mention there's a definite increase of anime titles edging towards or outright explicit yuri canonicity.

Still the biggest issue yuri is still facing now is it's not yet supplanted itself along with other subgenres like ecchi fanservice, moe, or anything fujoshi related.

Hell, freakin' Genshiken doesn't even talk about yuri fandom at all

Thanks for recommending this you guys, it's delightfully comfy (and definitely Stretch-like, the chapter with all the "dances" especially). The simultaneous release of content for two different time periods in their relationship is a really interesting format.

I thought pic related was interesting because I've never seen intentional transmission considered as an option during a zombie outbreak (plus it's adorable).

Maybe it's something about human psychology?
Protecting females is instinctive. It might have similar causes to natural white knighting.
Or maybe it's just a dominance thing. A male would rather let female spend time with other females, than males. It seems to be reflected in more social acceptance for female homosexuality, than male one.

>>2174371
I would disagree about the reasons. Hetero anime is often unenjoyable due to harem theme with unlikeable male character.

Morishima's semi-autobiographical works are quite realistic. I think she self inserts as a wavy haired blonde woman and the short black haired woman is her IRL gf/wife.

Is this underrated? Looks generic and starts off weak but gets interesting as it progressed. I like the character development, simple but not repetitive or boring. It's better than Numale Game imo. I actually can't comprehend how new game got so popular while this stays under the radar, they basically have the same formula, only this one utilized it better.

>>
>>2174369
It gradually happened to me as well. At first I didn't mind het at all, although I had a strong preference for yuri for as long as I can remember. Our first match is with /x/, and we do have /u/ relevant franchises that deal with ghosts and the supernatural.
Therefore, the staff will change some of the music for that match. If you are interested, follow this pastebin which contains links to the music poll, the /u/ team page and the /u/ 4CC Discord channel:

The poll will run exactly 24 hours.
As always, please don't discuss this poll in this thread, you can join us through the Discord channel.

We can't say for sure that if Marimite didn't exist less ambiguous yuri works would have become popular in its place, especially considering Japan's stance towards homosexuality.

One could just as well say that without the commercial success of Marimite producers would have abandoned yuri altogether, and we would have got none of the more explicit works that came later which were inspired by Marimite and shows like it.

I see. The term was not used to imply something negative in the original tweet by the artists so I wonder if there's other meaning. Guess it's okay to call it almost 1:1 translation of yurifag then. We don't use the term here in /u/ but I don't think anyone that likes yuri actually felt insulted when they're called yurifag. Or maybe I'm just desensitized to it.

>lesbians more socially acceptable than gays

Oneesama, that's not true. Lesbianism is only more "acceptable" as a fetish, meaning two pretty girls getting it on in porn, and historically had not been prosecuted due to people can't see how two girls can have sex. But as soon as either girl is not hot or when people realize the girls actually love and want to marry each other, it's less digestible than male homosexuality.

I come from a very conservative Asian country, and we are just starting to have progressive stuff in our media. For the past 10 years, a dozen serious lgbt movies had been made and it's all about gays. Last year finally a lesbian movie is made, and the director and cast all said what I knew: lesbianism is a much harder pill to swallow than male homo for the majority of the population, that's why it took this long and this much courage for them to commit to a project this risky.

All of my IRL friends have the same sentiment. They're all homophobic (despite being non-religious) and would never watch those films, but they're ok with a gay side couple in a mainstream film. According to them, gays are those "weirdos," whereas lesbians are "disgusting." Sonetimes I tested their reaction by showing them an AKB48 fluffy clip, and both guys are girls said it's disgusting. The only difference: guys said it while scoffing condescendingly, girls cringe and show more annoyance.

So yeah, male homosexuality is much more socially acceptable than lesbianism.
>>
>>2176163
In the opening quest you'll sleep with a woman no matter what your gender. I haven't played it much after that though.

Lesbianism is much more accepted in a christian society than in an ancient pagan one. Not the sex though, just the purity and self commitment. Male homosexuality in the other hand is more tantamount to lust than love, therefore in the christian society it would be seen as repulsive.

What >>2176205 said is 100% true in western countries (which would be the prime "christian societies") too though. Think about all the western media with gay male characters/couples and all the western media with gay female characters/couples. The former is a thousand times more prevalent than the latter. The farthest you generally get is "otherwise straight female character has a temporary bicurious fling" or porn "lesbians". I'm not trying to start an oppression olympics thing, just saying that female homosexuality is not more accepted.

Male homosexuality got more media coverage, but I think it's much more obnoxious. I hate that literally all comedy films from my country, need to have gay or trans (drag queen, male in dress) character.

The "acceptance" you talk about, seems to be from desensitization due to extreme exposure. We could speculate, that difference in media coverage, is due to real opposition to male homosexuality in society, and serves an agenda. Unlike female one, which is ignored due lesser opposition. While I wouldn't say that female homosexuality is accepted, I think people are just much more ignorant and indifferent towards it.

And, as you say, culture plays a big role in it.

Islam for example explicitly bans male homosexuality with severe punishment, but female homosexuality is regarded as a lesser sin.

I've never actually watched My Hime or anything related.
I know it's not actually yuri, and apparently even ShizNat are not actually a couple during the anime itself. Only afterward, so I've heard.
Is it worth a watch?

Also is My Otome better in regards to yuri? I know literally nothing about it except it's some alternate universe with some shared characters.
>>
>>2176825
>Is it worth a watch?
Yes, it is a pretty good series but it has a lot of het though. Also the end is shit.

>is My Otome better in regards to yuri?
Not really
>>
>>2176825
It is...okay. If you're okay with exageratted het drama, that was my main complain with it. They even do something interesting with it at the end, however.

Mai Otome starts pretty good as a good adventure anime with fun characters...then again, het drama ruins everything. Zwei OVAs are good, though. S.ifr are shit.

I think the best of both works are the characters...Side characters, at least.
I really like Arika when she's not in love with a random guy, but Mai is boring.
>>
>>2176825
Yes and no. All up to taste and all.

Been a very long time since I saw it but I felt let down by all the school drama/filler after the first episode had the awesome yacht shit going on, and that stuff continues for at least a dozen episodes if I remember correctly. Eventually the plot kicks in, and it kicks in really hard, and the music during that is fucking perfect and a lot of HAPPENING happens. It's all really great up until the ending. The ending is universally regarded as fucking awful and it is best that you know that and keep your expectations for it low.

If you are into mahou shoujo like I am you will probably like it at least a bit. It's pretty different though, and while it has a complicated but prominent yuri couple there is a lot of het going around. Overall it is deeply flawed but worth watching, I think.

Never got around to watching Otome, though.

I watched S.ifr for the first time last night and just found the whole thing a bit odd really. I know they're constrained by the fact that it's a prequel, but there seemed to be a lot of shoutouts that straight up didn't make sense, and considering we know that Lena and Sifr have to be in het relationships to have their kids it was disappointing that the only explicit yuri was Eliot's perverted, unrequited love for Lena and references to Zion being gay, but no followup whatsoever. The animation was great though.

Definitely watch it. The plot is above average, the execution is quite poor but not terrible. But the main reason you should watch are, of course, ShizNat, music, and the world's setting.

ShizNat didn't generate the biggest yuri fanfiction fandom for nothing. Besides their relationship and character development (scattered throughout the show in brief chunks), their strength also come from the other characters. The big cast lent Shizuru and Natsuki a group of diverse friends and enemies that can be used in different AUs.

Mai Hime is a better anime than Mai Otome. But watch both.

You need to rewatch the whole thing, especially that double suicide episode.

Natsuki's apologized for never noticing Shizuru's feeling and wasn't sure if she could reciprocate. It's not a rejection, otherwise nothing after their resurrection would make sense:

- The epilogue showed Shizuru continue with her flirting (joke about staying back a year to help Natsuki with studying, glomping her in the karaoke).

- The bonus animation showed Shizuru walking naked into a bath and surprised a flustered Natsuki.

All of these advances it clear that Natsuki never rejected Shizuru. In fact, Natsuki allowed Shizuru to woo her openly and Shizuru jumped on that chance. The eventual confirmation that Natsuki reciprocate is a fitting conclusion, not something happened out of nowhere.

I never said it wasn't canon, just that it's terribly handled and cheap. I understand people clinging onto the series a decade ago when there was so little else, but there's no point in continuing with that now.
>>
>>2177843
>That's not what she says.
Let's see if I can fix your retardation.

If they both had died permanently right there, then Natsuki's words "I DIDN'T feel the same way" would have 2 possible meanings: 1) I didn't and will never love you, 2) I didn't back then but I'm not saying anything about the future. You have no ground to say number 1 was "definitely" what she meant, when the ending, bonus animation and word of god had all confirmed number 2 is correct.

>It's a shitty ending that doesn't make sense in general.

The happy ending was too perfect, but it still is canon and make sense in regard to ShizNat in particular. Natsuki got over the rape. She got her revenge through killing Shizuru, Shizuru is still her most important person and Natsuki decided considering Shizuru's feelings. That's why she allowed the wooing. That's why shizuru DARED touching her.

>And doesn't show Natsuki reciprocating in any way.

Natsuki is a tsundere. Are you dumb? The fact that she allowed Shizuru to touch and woo her again (instead of freaking out at her rapist like before) is a significant progress. If Natsuki has no feelings for Shizuru, she would tell her to keep a distance, both to prevent misleading her friend and to spare herself PTSD.

>More cheap pandering after the fact

>hurr durr anything that don't fit my mental gymnastic is just pandering.

I bet you love the het because anything yuri is just pandering to you.
>>
>>2177875
>I DIDN'T
That's not what Natsuki says in the original Japanese, in which she uses the present tense, "I don't". It wouldn't even make sense for her to talk about not being able to reciprocate in the past, since she only found out about Shizuru's feelings a few days earlier.

>PTSD
Mai Hime's treatment of rape is so incredibly unrealistic it doesn't even make sense to talk about PTSD. Well, at least you aren't trying to argue Shizuru just cuddled her.

Honestly though, even in places where people watch tons of anime and have minute knowledge of key animators of particular scenes in an episode, the view is that yuri is only appealing to men and being "queerbait" unless it's about living as a gay person. I guess it's because yaoi is so female dominated so the opposite must be true for yuri.

>>
>>2179808
It doesn't "resonate" because it isn't trying to resonate. Sakura Trick is a fantasy. It's what Tachi wanted her high school life to be: secretly sneaking off between classes to make out with a girl who loves you just as much as you love her. She isn't trying to touch on real issues because she probably already deals with that stuff in real life already.

So call it male pandering because it some guys fetishize it, but the heart of Sakura Trick is the love story the mangaka always wanted and probably never had.

I admit that I went a little overboard tried to make it sound more deep and meaningful that it actually was. But pretentiousness aside, I think there are some validity to my points.

Firstly, Japanese entertainment is largely based around wish-fulfillment. Look at how many self-insert MCs and high school settings are in anime and manga alone. And it doesn't only appeal to guys, girl have their shoujo manga. I don't think it's out of the question for a lesbian to have some as well. Secondly, several other lesbian mangaka (Jin and Ritz) have talked about the challenges of being a lesbian in Japan so she's probably dealt with similar things, especially with a pen that says shes the top in a lesbian relationship. Is really at much of stretch to say that she might imagine herself as Haruka in her manga?

But who am I kidding, it is probably me just being delusional.

But I just saw the content discussed.
Yeah, I see why it's gone.
>>
>>2181177
Mods never delete shit when we complain about duplicate threads, they only delete shit when they feel upset. Fuck.
>>
>>2181194
Which is hilarious considering some people were complaining about the lack of thread pruning in said thread. Could also have to do with no one really reporting the duplicate thread but that seems like a silly thought.

Hey /u/

I just saw pic related in a book store and bought it. 3rd volume start with 27th chapter, French, but if anyone is interested I'll upload it. (i didn't know it was released in France, 1st and 2nd volume are out of stock so I can't upload those before, for now)

Since English scan are stuck at the 21st... If you want it I'll start a thread later. For now I have to order the other ones.
