Not sure if anyone here is enough of an oldfag to remember 1000 Luxuries, but I've been emailing with the author ever since the story got taken down because of all the melodrama. I've sporadically brought up the idea of finishing the fic up in private, just for me to read for some closure, and she seems open to the idea.

Finally meeting her in person this week, and I'm thinking of bringing the idea up again, and maybe asking if I can share it here with /u/ all. I don't think she really knows what 4chan or /u/ are, but there are like 5 people here, so I can tell her it'll be private.

Any of /u/ actually interested? If not, I'm just gonna try to be as much of a normie as possible and not bring up the fic at all when I meet her.

Overall the manga was better than the anime, but it felt like the manga should've shown more details about how Chitaru discovered Hitsugi's poison and their talks during the play skipped around too much. It's definitely improved, since their death scene was added to the doujin though.

I had to have this discussion on /co/ recently, but "gross" is not criticism. Gross isn't objective, isn't valid, and isn't a reason not to do something. Bad things happen in life, and ignoring them or not writing them doesn't make them go away.

Of course I can't defend badly used/done only for shock value/overdone rape. Rape deserves a kind of gravity and shouldn't be used cheaply.

The manga had so so SO many problems. If it weren't for Minakata's art, it would have have gained no traction whatsoever.

Look at some of dialogue. Even if you blame it all on iHoshiku's questionable translations early on, they were still some very campy writing and dreadful story pacing.

All the good parts of the stories were isolated instances, and none of those would have mattered without Minkata's art injecting so much personalities (or at the very least, inspiring fans to dream up so many personalities) into the characters.

I'd say the character popularities are more because of their good and distinct character designs as well as a great artist. I found the characters themselves to be somewhat shallow, especially since the 12-episode anime liked to do a villian of the week format.

Basically, here's the character, here's their sob story, they fail at assassination, goodbye forever, cue character song ed. This series was largely forgettable, it's a shame the writer didn't realize how bland the anime was and completely redo the second half of the manga.

I love them too, but only because of the "basis" of their characters and Minakata's Art.

There were very few developments with actual changes and actions taken by the characters. The notable ones were

1. Tokaku getting spooked by the queen bee revelation and making a dumb plan to prove her free will.

2. Isuke actually realizing she had some things in common with Haruki

3. Chitaru not pussying out and actually choosing the real knife.

The rest were just all simple back stories that were told straight up with nothing else to add. And then it all just ends happily for a group of teenager murderers.

Bad characters is different than characters not being thoroughly developed. Of course, if the characters are really underdeveloped (screentime-wsie) they indeed become bad.
But I think this is not the case here, since the basis we got and their air time is enough to support them on its on to a certain degree.

Sure I don't dissagree that there were some plotholes they had to develop more. But this probably is because they didn't want to work on this manga for many years. Also it feels like Kuga was getting tired, but this is totally my assumption.

Have you ever seen a bad B movie, or a shitty horror flick or romcom that, despite -knowing- is not a quality product, you enjoy anyway? It's kind of the same here. The girls of AnR aren't very well developed and most of them are nothing but a few personality quirks and a sad backstory - interesting characters these qualities do not make. And yet, we like them: their designs are nice, their interactions are cute and/or entertaining, and their role in the story works.

They aren't good characters. Most don't develop, most don't do anything, really, besides try to kill a single person. But despite this they're likeable because of the aforementioned quirks and backstories and interactions. In the same way that a badly made, 80's era horror movie is "bad" (cliche, badly acted, badly written) but might be enjoyable nonetheless (because of the characters, or the inherent nonsense of the plot, or the score, or the gore, or any other thing).

tl;dr
Bad and likeable are not mutually exclusive.

The problem with AnR, in my opinion, is that the stories are limitating. Like this anon >>2180332 said, if people stay in character and write only small fics, then it really gets repetitive.
Because there are like, 5 other similar stories, so to me it feels pointless repeting the same stuff.
These one shots and very in universe stories have already been written before many times already, when AnR was still freshly aired.

I actually don't mind writing something long or different, but AnR is not the fandom for these type of fanfics.
This is why I pick Mai Hime to write more original stuff instead. Because it's a big fanfic fandom, and it allows the author to have more freedom of their settings, characters and plots.
