Is Korea really that bad with lgbtq people though or is the writer exagerrating? I know a k-drama got canned for having a lesbian kiss but the webcomic just seems excessively homophobic. Korea seems like a pretty modern country but the characters in the comic are less tolerant than in America/Canada/England.

Well I won't claim to be any kind of expert in Korean culture since all I know basically comes from watching entertainment from there, and especially not on homophobia specifically. But from what I do know, I think it's fair to say it's probably quite a bit worse about it than most western countries (though to be fair, all your examples, especially the US, has plenty of it in certain areas while others are basically pride-town 24/7).

Even compared to Japan, my impression of Korean culture is quite a bit more rigid and old-fashioned. Despite being someone who consumes media from both places, I'm definitely no weaboo/Koreaboo. Taking Japanese views of something like homosexuality for example, one popular idea of it is they don't disapprove the nebulous idea of it, or of some stranger on the street being gay, but they wouldn't approve at all if it was their kids.

In Korea, I'd say that sentiment would naturally be even stronger. My impression of Korean culture is that A: even compared to Japan, the reverence of elders both in general and especially within the family is many times higher. Basically if you're old you can do whatever the fuck you want and young people will be at your beck and call. And B: the family units are very very often multi-generational, in that adults in their 20s or 30s will still live with their parents, who also might house a grandparent or two, and so on. Far more so than Japan or the west.

So basically, imagine all the typical family-related LGBT drama in Japanese media and multiply it by a lot. As for media, what I know of Korean TV feels a lot less transgressive than Japanese TV, and far less so than the west for example. Korean internet is fucking crazy so I wouldn't envy any gay celebrities in the slightest. Etc etc.

Its a webtoon about a straight guy who ends up rooming with a gay guy. Romance will never happen between them. It's like a story about straight people becoming more and more accepting of gays, lesbians, etc as time passes on. The Yoona girl anon was talking about is a recurring character from the story. She has had her own arc with her exgay-hating brother, then she showed several times after that, and the chapter where the translators left off (last translated update was 100+ days ago) is the best arc - her yuri arc.

In Korea, it is a much different story and it's honestly because of the culture. Both Japan and Korea are conservative, but Korea is sort of it's own variety of conservative due to historical religious beliefs. Most noteworthy case was an upcoming Korean heartthrob actor who came out on TV as gay. When he said that, immediately after the taping, everyone dropped him as a contact and was kicked out of the film industry. He commited suicide after.

There was another male actor as well who was well known for being typecast as a coded girl's best fag friend, but when he came out as gay, dramas and comedies refused to hire him, ironically. He's doing well for himself as a bar owner in a gay district though.

It actually used to be that in Korean girl schools, girls used to do that lovey dovey romance stuff with each other, like give each other chocolates, give each other love letters, etc. But with gayness as an issue popping up, those kids immediately changed their behavior and now those girls are absolutely vicious towards anything that could be perceived as homosexual behavior. There's actually been reports of gay high school girl gangs who form out of secrecy. And those girls in turn bully the bi chicks, it's all kinds of fascinating.

I can't really speak with any great authority, but it wouldn't surprise me if China was better than Korea at it (though probably still pretty bad). At least in terms of impact on personal relationships and daily life, as opposed to laws and media. However, while I say that, China is fucking huge and diverse in many ways, I'd say even more so than the US. And just like the US has the Bible Belt on one end and places like San Fransisco on the other, there are huge differences in how stuff like that is treated across China.

Anyway, back to my Korea comparison, my impression is that of basically all the big Asian countries it has the biggest reverence for Traditional Ways of Doing Things. I've watched a lot of Korean variety for example, and the hard-on those have for making its participants - typically celebrities of various kinds, usually from the music/idol-industry - do hard, back-breaking menial farm-work and similar in the guise of challenges and entertainment is almost mind-boggling from a western perspective. There's also the previously mentioned extreme reverence for old people

Keep in mind South Korea went from a country of economic and political hardships through large parts of the 20th century, certainly relatively low-tech and 'backwards' compared to western nations of the time, to a technological and cultural superpower in an EXTREMELY short period of time. The difference not just in standards of living but in cultural exposure - both ways - is staggering. I'm no expert on it but it's not hard to imagine that, combined with the North Korea tensions as well as the norms and ideals instilled by various autocratic dictators, this has had a lasting impact on the national psyche and people's general views and attitudes. While Mao-time was bad, China's own progress through the century was still far less...schizophrenic, shall we say. And most discussion of Chinese culture/norms/etc will naturally focus just on its most populated regions and cities.

The idolon author/artist hurt (her?) shoulder, and that put a limitation on (her?) ability to draw. Oddly the Alien Hand Syndrome author/artist also hurt his/her shoulder (actually tore rotator cuff from what I recall reading).

Not sure what it's worth, but there's canon /u/ in Ozzie the Vampire. Nora's a sort of side character who's been showing up more and her wife (I think they're married) just came back from Japan. So far, the main characters of Ozzie and Kimmy seem to be uninterested in anything but kicking demon ass and (in Ozzie's case) collecting video game toys.

For me the art is not really a problem, it's the obnoxious I have to give representation to every sexuality or identity there is and waste pages on that as some rule, while in the comic the only sexuality who never got really represented as it turned out after author reveal chapters are lesbians and gay guys.

I don't know about /u in general, but I just marathoned the last 1200 comics, and I like it. I know a lot of 4chan'll be turned off by the depictions of gender fluidity and transformations, but I like how consistently he's created his world. He probably put more thought into how his magic works than JK Rolling did for Harry Potter's. Plus I like the art, and there's just the right amount of lesbians. I hate it when stories decide that half the female main characters are gay just because lesbians are cool.
