Well I get it if you read the manga first. The tone is very different, even though it's technically a prequel. The manga and the anime were made at the same time, so I guess it's one of those cases where each work was handled by different people with no communication.
The anime really did shift gears quite heavily halfway through though, there was a lot more of Meg coming onto Jo (though not quite like in the manga). Maybe somebody in the staff was trying to align the two works just a little bit better.

This is probably a dumb question, but is there a good image viewer for Android devices? I want to read manga/doujinshi on my phone and the default Gallery won't let me sort the pages by name/number order.

I'm currently using ES File Explorer and while it's good, the occasional ad pop up is obnoxious and sometimes the app boots me out of the current doujin page when I minimize it.

The first episode did have enjoyable and funny moments. Agari seems like a smaller breasted Nodoka. I love that she got into table tennis for all the ladies she racks up from it. Doggie girl has a few similarities to Saki. (Not as many as Agari appears to have with Nodoka - personality wise).
Wonder if this show will spur on more animation work on Saki...I hope so. Hopefully the two can feed off each other.
