The "recap talk" was awkward as fuck, and that stuff with the students that amounted to anything was ridiculous too. What were the episode director and the writer thinking?

I love all of Sunshine episodes but episode 12. Episode 13 was legit good because it 's very 'Sunshine'.

Competitions like that usually have pretty strict time limits for performances in case someone decides to do something absurd like a five minute spoken-word intro. Interestingly, they left all the lesbian drama out of their recap.

It shouldn't be hard to deliver a dramatic and exciting season finale when your characters are in a competition. Just copy Glee or Hibike! Euphonium.

The ending was a bit shit, but overall it was much better than LL season 1. Production values and animation were higher, it did manage to distinguish itself and do different things, all of the girls feel distinct and I like all of them, plus it has more yuri and none of it really felt forced or arbitrary.

If they do a season 2 I really hope they don't do what they did with LL season 2 and just slam two characters together and shiptease with them because they're popular in the fandom, despite doing nothing in the first season to really build a relationship. The NicoMaki stuff in 2 was hilariously forced and I could never buy into the anime's portrayal of it. I just worry they'll be like oh shit YohaRiko and suddenly Sunshine S2E01 will have the two of them on a date with no explanation.

Most of the characters in OG, barring the 3rd years stuck closely to their archetypes(except maybe Rin).

In Sunshine, we see all the girls break out of their cliches, showing more dimension and changing greatly over time. As a result, seeing Aqours grow and succeed feels much more gratifying than μ's ever had.

Case in point:

Honoka's conflict was about his friend she had all her life was about to part ways, and since they already saved the school, honoka (being not true with her feelings) decided to quit the competition since Kotori was leaving. This felt more humane, like it or not.

See also the 2 other episodes with least percentages of the audience picking option 1. Episode 1 only did basic introductions and setting the scene. Episode 7 was quite bland and all the events in it were buildup for what would come in episode 8 and on. Narrative-wise, while this buildup is needed for climatic scenes to have impact later on, when the buildup itself takes place it is comparatively less interesting.

Going to agree with the other anon here. LLS! was pretty trashy, like, whether you like it or not, there wasn't much that particularly made it distinct from the previous season (regurgitating plot points i.e. antagonistic school council or school closing down) or anything that was particularly outstanding about any of the characters that made them appealing.

At least in the first season a lot of the drama derives from the flaws of the characters and it consistently tries to resolve them in some manner. Arguably the first season could be broken down into three core arcs - Founding the group / Eli / Kotori - but in Sunshine, any antagonistic elements are just throw by the way side rather than being resolved.

Just look at the way Dia is handled in the earlier episodes where the implication is that - for some arbitrary reason (and not just because she's an idol otaku) - she opposes the formation of a new group and like Eli, rejects the application. Like, surely it would have made way more sense (and allowed the writers to A) do something different and B) save time) if she'd just stepped in as a mentor from day one (and maybe later decided to join in). She has no reason to be as jaded as she apparently is, since she's the one who conspired with Kanan to throw the live. Of course, like, even then, I just thought it seemed really awkward how quickly she came around off screen - as if no-one had quite figured out how to resolve that dilemma (at least Eli admitted that she was in the wrong).

At which point then, the whole school shutting down element gets introduced, which was kind of inane because in a small fishing town, where are they actually going to pull new people from? (unless they move in, which requires job vacancies), never mind the fact that, what teenager actually gives a damn about their school? It was a questionable plot element the first time but hard to swallow the second time.

And even then, the justification as that they really like the town because it has a nice community but it's not as if the community is going to disappear because you have to take a twenty minute bus ride into the city (as someone who lives rurally, where some schools have been merged, I can attest that this is the case). I mean, I suppose you could argue that over time, without a local school, families might feel less inclined to move to the town itself and eventually it might die out but then the issue becomes a systematic one and one that even the government is struggling to resolve, so it's hard to think that even as idols, Chika and co will necessarily achieve much - even if they do, odds are that their school will be used as the main school for the area rather than the one in the next nearest city, so ultimately, it would still become a mixed gender school.


Of course, this is just kind of dropped until the final episode.

Then we have the Yoshiko e episode, which isn't really a source of antagonism but it was a bastion of shit writing. The implication from the final five minutes is that Yoshiko enjoys being dressing up, even if she's aware that it runs counter to what is socially acceptable and even if she is aware that she isn't really a demon. Except the entire episode up until that point does nothing to convey any of this, only Yoshiko going into chunni mode and then getting upset because she acted compulsively (as if she had DID or something), like, all it needed was some introspection to convey the reason why she's upset but it's never given until Chika states it, at which point, we've already been through a rather convincing scene (which feels a lot like the end of a character arc) where Yoshiko decides to give up her demonic side and because the viewer is never given any insight other than Yoshiko's apparent distress over her inability to shake this character, it feels, naturally, like a rather fitting resolution.

Anyway, Yoshiko gives it up and moves on in life. Except then the cast turn up and tell her to put the dress back on (presumably because the show can't function otherwise) and tell her to join the group - which arguably could have functioned as an outlet for her to experiment with new/alternative identities - effectively, move forward, except it doesn't, so it kind of makes everything moot, especially since nothing of substance is conveyed until the final five minutes).

Also, the fact that they recruited her felt kind of forced (like, no-one every really seemed to give that much of a damn about her as a person, other than trying to understand her eccentricity, so it came off like Chika was recruiting her because she was pretty and had a residual fanbase, rather than because she was actually after a sixth member - something that is somewhat cemented by the following several episodes, in which Yoshiko is effectively used as a punching bag for jokes).

Also, the fact that she never breaks character after episode five felt kind of lame. Like, especially since her chunni-persona is used for comic relief, it's hard to feel emotion for a character that is rarely sincere or introspective in any manner.

Then it gets into the third year drama (there is also Saint Snow but they don't feel like particularly meaningful antagonists since they don't actually hinder or challenge the cast in any way, other than sharing a few mean words).

I didn't really mind the resolution to it but it felt weird that they'd turn up at the end of scenes, like, actually going out their way to find each other, just to spout cryptic, passive aggressive lines at each other (to foreshadow the coming arc),

At the very least, given how often they run into each other prior to episode nine, it's weird to think that things are still so frosty, that absolutely nothing at all between them as come out in the wash.

And at least after Eli joined, she got some lines and was acknowledged as the new member of the group. When Kanan joins, she gets like thirty seconds of dialogue tops and everyone just acts like nothing has changed - as if nothing of consequence happened in the previous episode.

I didn't mind the conflict in the final two episodes - the question of being "yourself" should have been the core foundation on which the series was built, like, that way, at least the finale would have felt climatic - in the sense that they realise saving the school and winning (like Muse) are things that don't matter and thus become irrelevant (hence why we don't see the conclusion to the Love Live or the school issue, because it no longer matters).

But doing it in the space of two episodes didn't really give the viewer enough time to really buy into the whole thing - if nothing else, because when they decided to be themselves, you realise "great but what is Aquors?"

The show sets out a question that should have, to the viewer, should already have an answer before the cast even started asking it but the problem is that with so many half developed characters - who just slip into comic relief roles (i.e. Hanamaru, Yoshiko, Mari, Ruby), it's hard to really feel particularly interested in the characters or their ambitions.

Sure the cast is big, so I realise it can't get developed properly in one season but that's why a) you cut down the cast or b) don't write in a question that hinges on having a well defined cast. The resulting effect is that the conclusion just falls flat because the emotional appeal it relies on isn't well enough established.

Plus the hollow philosophical waxing in the final episode about going from zero to one just felt hollow because Aquors still have no defined personal goal/motivation that fits that narrative (the fact that they got into the Love Live means that they made someone smile, so they achieved that, effectively) other than gaining new school applicants - which just sorta feeds back into the criticism that the series is a carbon copy of the first Love Live (also the amount they bring up "Zero to One" in the space of, like, five minutes is really grating, like, it doesn't make it more impactful if you keep saying it).

Plus there were the meta allusions to the first series throughout the series, that just got kind of annoying, like, it's hard to feel like it's "their" story if it's just being co-opted as a vehicle to reference the previous series, say nothing of the fact that the allusions to Muse only serve to make a distinction of what the new cast aren't.

In a sense it's like negative space because all it does, by comparing the new cast to the previous, is tell us what they aren't. But it doesn't actually do anything to convey what they are, so fundamentally all it does is waste time and ruin the immersion for the viewer.

Personally speaking, had I not enjoyed the previous series so much, I'd have stopped after the Yohane episode, to be completely honest.

It's 2:00 a.m. here, so I'm not going in-depth like the other anon, but I found myself Sunshine more than the original.

I'm more invested in Aqours because they have to work harder for their fame, while μ's honestly had their's handed it to them on a silver platter. Season one of Sunshine is a more polished version of the original series, with the drama actually planned and elements like the school closure playing off better. Identifying a location as its own character is such a cliche, but Sunshine succeeded in characterizing Uchiura similarly to the cast: a nobody with a lot to offer to the world if given the chance to shine.

The constant name-dropping of μ's was controversial for good reason. Early episodes really overdid and made the series come across as plagiarizing the original series, than paying tribute to it. The third episode of Sunshine basically replicating Honoka and co.'s first disastrous performance - despite some few differences - rubbed me the wrong way. However, I do think these moments serve as necessary fuel for the breaking point in episode eight, where you see everything come back to bite Chika; snapping her out of her μ's fantasy and taking things more seriously.

Overall, I do believe the meta-commentary about "moving on from μ's" was clever. What I really love most about Sunshine, however, was the examination of inspiration and the good and bad that comes with it.

Final episode may have been over-indulgent with the stage play, but there were a lot of great callbacks to the series' own gags and clearly demonstrated Aqours are going to shine in their own unique way from now on (and they're finally making progress because of it).

Sunshine wasn't perfect, but it was lots of fun. More gayer and more real than initially expected.

That's why chuuni characters just don't work. The only character development you can give them is getting over their stupid shit, but if you do that, they aren't a chuuni character anymore. The one drama element I thought worked really was the Riko/Chika/You triad. It was nice to see Chika and Riko's relationship grow, Chika being empathetic and considerate of Riko while at the same time not being that at all to You, which hurt her.

I never understood the appeal of this ship. I mean, out of all the popular ships it seems to be the most random. They rarely if ever talked, which makes sense considering how incompatible their personalities are with each other.

Maybe not in the anime (which is just one of the many things Hanada is drawing flak for), but they interact quite a lot in all other media. Even in the anime, any reference they make to each other, such as Riko telling Yoshiko to get down from the table, is met with enthusiasm, particularly from the voice actresses themselves.

The "incompatibility" of their personalities is also only on the surface. Yoshiko is attentive and considerate past the bluster: compare her apology to a passerby she bumped into versus Chika barreling into and past the same passerby. Meanwhile, Riko looks like she has got it together when she really hasn't most of the time. They have complementary sides which balance out.

And it's a funny dynamic when one of them is carried away while the other has to hold her back.

tl;dr: even if you don't see it, others still do.

Regarding the flak, let's be honest the only person manning the guns are YoshiRiko fans.
Regarding incompatibility, the one time they sorta kinda interacted it pretty much established that Riko is weirded out by Yoshiko's persona. The only one I can see getting along with Yoshiko in a serious level is someone who genuinely likes or appreciate the stupid demon act which strangely enough would in fact be Chika.

Heck, SoraPai ship NicoMaki and JolKs ship NozoEli. Everybody in μ's ships RinPana. Mimorin ships HonoUmi and personally wants to date Kotori. All these are treated as support for the pairings since the shipping comes out in their chemistry and portrayals of the characters, >>2151942 is but one example.

Or compare Suwawa and Ainya going on about Mari picking out Kanan's clothes, Kanan and Mari sharing the same transport to school, etc. Would you say, no, it adds no value, the ship isn't happening?

Secondly, not every ship comes out of the seiyu relationships. EliRin has no noticeable connection to anything Yoshino did with Rippi to become a noticeable crack ship. Stuff like NicoMaki predated the years when Sora and Pile started pandering to it.

Still looking back it amuses me. A suspected YoshiRiko-shipping poster on this thread ranted about tumblrites shipping Yoshimaru.

13 episodes on with a tacked on backstory and 20 lines more than Riko ever had with Yoshiko and it's now the most popular Yoshiko ship and an even more popular Hanamaru ship.

I guess it's pretty cool if the seiyu ship anything but to me it remains trivial. I don't ship characters based on how their seiyu interact. I certainly don't ship NozoEli or UmiMaki even if their portrayers get close.

The fact that I can't understand Japanese to understand what they are saying and I don't like watching the seiyu programs makes it even more meaningless.

Does it add any value? Not much, the value it adds a ship I already support is minimal and I certainly won't ship it any enthusiastically because of it. Even if I cared I don't understand what they're saying half the time nor particularly care about their real life interactions too much to use it as the basis for shipping fictional characters. Even if translated, I probably would not watch these programs which supposedly is the source of shipping.

Is a ship going to happen? They aren't the writers so they don't have much control over that. It's not as though they actually wrote their scripts and scenarios.

That is simply not true. Actors( or Voice Actors) are subject to the interpretation of the writer/director/creator or whoever is responsible for creating the character. At best, they can provide their own insight on the character they are portraying that the creators can accept.

Even more amusing that early during the anime airing, a smug YoshiRiko shipper was declaring that his ship would be the next NicoMaki and leave every other ship in the dust, as if it was anywhere near the level of 3-4 years of pre-anime popularity.

Safe to say that didn't happen. In fact the tags pretty much show that YoshiMaru is the new hotness, while YoshiRiko is basically on the same level ChikaRiko.

I really don't mind YoshiRiko, (since Love Live is an all ship inclusive franchise) but the shippers have been quite obnoxious about it, feeling the need to cherry pick every scene where they don't even interact as if it was shipping material and feel the need to show it to everyone.

You mean the same people who can't decide on how characters address each other, what stories contradict what stories, and revise personality traits as and when they deem fit?

Yeah, it sure is an easy job, just voicing some characters. Not as if they have to constantly adapt and consolidate all the different official material and directions. Not like they hadn't beat out many other participants in auditions to prove how they are best suited for their characters. How hard is it to stand behind a mic, right?
