Dragon Quest VII recently released.

It's not really the most /u/-entry but hey, it's fucking DQ7.

I really wish that, since DQXI decided to go back to a pre-designed hero instead of the more customizable ones of late, we at least got a pre-designed female option like IV or III.

Not just for potential /u/(for what little the series has in terms of personal developments for the hero outside of games like V or VIII, anyway), but he looks really plain and at the same time the color scheme is really garish.

Plus it might just be the internet being what it is, but the female versions of III and IV's hero seem to be the more popular design.

Something like Persona where the production values are relatively high for an Atlus production is one thing, but for the fairly humble and still mostly sprite-based presentations of SMT4A I think would be easy enough to accommodate. Doesn't the Fire Emblem setting run on parallel universes when it comes to its canon? So the Robin you see in Fates is just one version coming from one particular parallel universe?

Something else that can be done to accomodate a selectable gender without creating too much of a headache when it comes to what is canon is having two distinct main characters who are always present in the game, then at the start of the game letting players choose which one is going to be the protagonist and which one is going to be a party member.

Eh, I don't really feel it. It's just Lucina just trying to get Kjelle to get along and stop being so passive-aggressive with everybody she deems inferior. Closest I'd say is the scrambles but it's pretty much just a redux of their supports.

But I don't really think it's so unique to that particular pair.

I finally decided to do more beyond Smash with the amiibos I'd been collecting. And the amiibo fights in Fates come with an army of generics representing their early companions. Marth's is his starting crew with Jeigan and all that, Ike's is the Greil mercs, Robin's is Chrom, Lissa and Frederick, and Lucina's is the Awakening Second Gen.

And Lucina arrives in the fight backed up by her team's pegasus knight. So I figure, go with Cynthia, so often portrayed as her sister(and is mechanically destined to be), and the incest angle. And I liked what I was finding, in terms of interactions and stuff online but was I really enjoying the interactions or was I just getting off to sister incest?

I think what Lucina needs is someone smarter than she is, but also somebody that's not so distant and uptight, and with a playful personality, or at least I think therein lies the appeal of putting her with Palutena, beyond Sakurai putting them in a screenshot together.

I liked Fates well enough. It's no Path of Radiance, but I'd certainly rank it above Radiant Dawn, Shadow Dragon (just because it's a remake of the NES original doesn't make it any better) and *maybe* Sacred Stones.

Storyline-wise... Well, neither Birthright nor Conquest feel like the wars they're supposedly about, everybody in Conquest is an idiot for not seeing how blatantly evil King Evil is and the main character is kind of bland.

Not really, if Fates actually matched the hyperbolic vitriol you see thrown around about it it would've killed the franchise's Awakening momentum, instead of outdoing it as it has in terms of sales.

The gameplay is fantastic, refining Awakening's mechanical ambitions into something where you have to make bonafide tactical decisions about what you do each turn and your general layouts and loadouts, since pretty much everything from weapons to formations has a bonus and a flaw, either explicit(e.g. steel weapons having a hit to speed) or just passive(Guard Stance depriving you of an attacking unit).

Now, the game does have some weird issues. Conquest's plot is full of questionable elements and bizarre bending over backwards over trying to justify siding with the evil empire and continuing to commit or at least directly enable atrocities, and Revelations just meanders trying to get both casts on board for the plot.

Birthright is just your usual FE story told in the dozen other games, just with weeb flavoring since it's not!Japan, so it's generally the one you see the least complaints about.

The 2nd gen are also kind of weirdly implemented since they can't just reuse time travel, aren't doing a two generation story, and the scenario they did go with, stick em in Outrealms where they grow up faster obviously isn't exactly the most ideal.

The localization script isn't really as strong in terms of supports. While its immediate predecessor, Awakening, took pains to flavor the whole support script up, even between generic supports, Fates really feels like a basic transliteration in a lot of places with some gags thrown in, besides the fact that if they didn't redo Soleil's supports it probably would have been another press headache after Tomodachi.

In terms of story, Conquest and Birthright are pretty mediocre while Revelations is a bit better. If you're looking for diffuculty, Conquest Lunatic is pretty challenging and fun (Though to be fair I haven't played many other FEs) while Birthright is just "Let's send constantly respawning enemies for 10 minutes". Haven't tried Revelations (cause it's probably like BR).
I really enjoyed this game (Given I also enjoyed Awakening). The best way to describe it is it's Awakening on crack. Lots of new shit, but it still use Awakening as a base. Really if you liked Awakening you'll probably enjoy this.

I do really love their designs and Corrin is pretty fun to use in Smash, for what that's worth.

It is not a bad game they just tried a few new ideas and tweaks to some of the core like weapon triangle which people will argue does and does not work. It is alot more fanserviciy in terms of the class compared to older games especially in the mage classes and knight (no pants equals power). Aside from that the game play is solid and the different routes allow for the classic story driven and the sacred stones map driven. Have not gotten to do Revelations yet but its from what I understand making it where you get access to all the classes in the game. Kinda like Pokemon in term of classes you get certain untits with the Hoisdan and Nohr. If you like healers go Hoshido

I never played Awakening nor some of the SNES era games, but I played every FE game from 6 - 12, most of them several times (sorry 11 you're the black sheep). I got myself Birthright for my birthday - because gay wife option - and am about 2/3rds through. Honestly...I feel very disappointed in it.

Not everything about it is bad. Obviously I like having an actual F/F romance support option. The way most weapons are specialized so you want to switch them around reasonably often and weigh the pros/cons rather than stick to whichever suits the character best of Iron/Steel/basic ranged option for 90% of fights on any difficulty but the hardest is nice. I like the art pretty well even if I still slightly prefer any of the 7 - 10 games artstyle-wise - certainly compared to 11 - 13 I like it better. The maps are alright although a lot of them feel very straight-forward even with the dragon-vein gimmicks - the one in the opera house was pretty cool though! I like the new classes for the most part and I also like that HP actually feels like an important stat in terms of growths now that it's been lowered across the board, even if I'm not sure the lowered health is overall great for gameplay.

So for the negatives, I just absolutely despise how supports are done in this game. In fact, while there really doesn't seem to be much if any NEED to grind to beat the game - if you want to beat Birthright without ever doing the optional challenges or whatever they're called I'm sure it wouldn't be too tough. But what I find myself doing is running tons of them anyway. Not for the XP - they barely give any - or miniscule loot...but so I can actually get all the S-supports and kids. (Cont)

Simply put I wanted to get all the kids on my first play-through of the game (minus the ones you miss out on for being gay, thanks for that game) and it is very clearly and obviously not designed for that. It forces me to bring the guys and gals I don't have any interest in actually using on the grindy side-missions to level up their affection because I want their kid, where in previous games I could ignore them to no detriment of my enjoyment. Obviously this is partly an issue just with my specific completionist way of playing the game, but I still feel like it's worth mentioning.

Moving on, I feel that infinite weapon-uses and pair-up are both mechanics I just don't like for Fire Emblem. Pair Up is actually interesting in its own way, and where from what I heard it was apparently OP as fuck in 13 I actually feel it's somewhat balanced in 14 so far - your paired up characters are still OP as fuck, but you get only half as many actions a turn and lower HP (and it feels like avoid is low-ish too, more like 11/12 than 6 - 10) means pair-up tanking isn't QUITE as reliable. The thing is, just because it's balanced doesn't mean I like it, and in a game like Fire Emblem where limited units and actions is a central mechanic - just think of how important Bards and Dancers have been throughout the series - a mechanic that basically halves your actions per turns is just BORING. I don't like it. As for infinite weapon charges, I do feel it added something as mentioned in variety, but it also takes away the long-term planning and the element of conserving your resources that I really liked about Fire Emblem games compared to, say, FFT or Ogre Battle or what-have-you.

I dislike that a lot of the content feels geared towards multiple playthroughs rather than a completionist approach which I prefer, and which I feel like previous FE games (again, 13 notwithstanding) have encouraged. Getting all the kids in Birthright, given all the characters that you need to support and the limited character slots on the chaptered missions, feels like an exercise in grinding that is the opposite of fun and seems clearly designed so you pick half the pairs and get half the kids for a sane, non-grindy playthrough.

Another annoyance I have is what I'll call 'this mechanic is not strictly bad but I could experience it in many other games, I can't get the mechanics that are gone anywhere else'. Infinite weapon-uses vs weapons that run out of uses is one of these. If you didn't like the latter in FE before then this is probably a pro for you, but to me it was a waste of an interesting gameplay element balancing short-term risk for long-term gain. While I praised the variety of weapon-stats and effects earlier too, I do feel they make decisions and stats less interesting in some ways too - for example, there are basically designated 'defensive' weapons with bonus to Def/Res and really low Might so if you need to hold a choke you know you can put them on and you'll be alright. In the previous games, the danger of for example a strong character being so powerful they'd kill every enemy the first battle, leaving themselves open to more and more attacks and dying to attrition was a real danger. In this game specialized weapons like that makes it impossible. And so on. All 3 of the games probably have the worst story in any FE, and that's saying something. Gameplay-wise, Conquest was some of the most fun I've had, next to RD, since they made fantastic use of the skill system/dragon veins. Birthright is piss easy and Revalation has terrible maps.
Supports/characters are just as ackward as Awakening for the most part.
Yuri-wise, I heard the lesbian one was botched or something, but I just installed the gay hack and didn't worry about it.

Worth a playthrough of Conquest. If you like it, Revelations is decent enough for some closure.

Pair-up is still OP and centralizing. A Nohr Corrin w/ dragonic curse & dragonstone+ paired with a defence boosting unit will wall for days and debuff everyone that battles them by -4 for EVERY stat. Then you can just clean up.

But, it's also the only way to survive some maps, in particular, the macbeth battle in conquest where two platoons of beserkers and generals are all in very close vicinity of a door you have to open/hold.

They should introduce an enemy only weapon that always does set damage. Would be a good answer for godtanks.

How do you do the gay hack, anon? I only got my 3DS a couple months ago and haven't done anything with it other than play FE, so I'm pretty clueless.

I guess to add my thoughts on the romance/support, well honestly I wasn't expecting much because I've always thought FE supports are quite shallow anyway. From what I understand there's a trend of IntSys adding further scenes/interactions in DLC which I'm not a fan of but I digress. For actual criticism I'll spoiler since this is actually /u/-important: while I didn't really mind the stalker set-up that much in theory - it could be cute and Rhajat never comes off as threatening as such - I really felt that it was a terrible decision to make the F/F S-support a stalker routine. The reason is simple: because it's predicated on a support system that must allow for players that AREN'T interested in Rhajat, the C - A supports really really really come off as the MC uncomfortably tolerating and being nice to Rhajat who spergs at her, without the slightest sense of mutual attraction nor really even much that the MC likes Rhajat at all. Then suddenly she returns Rhajat's affections and then some in the S-support. Sure, most supports have the issue of sub-S supports not being particularly romantic if at all then S is suddenly confession, but at least in most it doesn't clash nearly so much with the previous supports.

I do find Rhajat quite cute though.

I do agree that Corrin can be insane with Pair Up (and obviously as I said I'm only talking about the first ~20 chapters and a few Paralogues of Birthright, not the full games and end-game stuff) and Dragonstone, but honestly I feel the Dragonstone is as much to blame in this case since it feels really OP even on its own. Beyond that though, while you're right that Pair Up is super strong for blocking doorways etc and luring out enemies by straying into range, I also felt that it was often inadequate in places where the game sends enemies at you in waves or all at once and you can't really wall-off their approach, easily at least - very few characters are near as tanky as Corrin, so there were some situations where I found having 10 - 12 characters all able to actively remove as much of the current wave as possible was less risky than pairing everyone up into 6 pairs and leaving an extra 2 - 4 enemies alive who could all focus the weakest paired group. It also at times led me to frequently pairing and unpairing the tankiest and most damaged units throughout, one of the few cases where I found Pair Up actually worked okay.

FE7's final boss had what you describe. GBA games also had the Luna tome, which could be used by both you and by enemies. It was hilarious against certain godtank bosses.
