How did Venus/Uranus make the leap in Crystal? The manga took place in the early 90s, where homosexuality and bisexuality in Japan were much more rarely discussed about and unusual seeming. Crystal takes place in the 2010s instead of being a period piece. Did that effect the anime or does Crystal just completely reenact the manga except for maybe a laptop or smartphone appearing in the background every so often?

Uranus and Neptune's scenes were pretty much taken directly from the manga. The most they got that was new was an ending song that's gay.

Hotaru and Chibi-usa's relationship was made gayer in the anime though, which is impressive considering Hotaru was already uber gay in the manga.

I'd like to believe that since they played up the Hotaru x Chibi-usa aspect, that they would downplay the romantic nature of Cibi-usa and Helios, but I don't have that much faith in them. They'll probably just do a straight adaption of the manga.

I disliked it in the manga and Crystal, where it's starting to look like Haruka would prefer Usagi to Michiru, but I liked what the old anime did with it. That version of Haruka likes Usagi but it's Michiru whom she loves. As a result, the person the dynamic reveals something about is Usagi, i.e. that she's a big fat closet case.

That reminds me, I read a good fanfic recently where Usagi was the only Senshi who was straight. In hindsight that's pretty dang wrong. Or was she closet bi? I can't remember.

It's not even a question of "would". The idea of lesbianism often makes Usagi uncomfortable and she reacts by making homophobic comments, most obviously in the S episode where everyone thinks Makoto is falling for Haruka. The only times Usagi really stops hiding her attraction to Haruka is when they're alone in the woods chained together or when she's drunk.

The manga's Usagi appears to be perfectly comfortable with her own sexuality. I suppose that might be the better lesson to children or whatever, but I feel a great deal of affection for the closet case Usagi.

Repressed girl in the 90s being a closet case over being bi is more funny than a girl in the 2010s who is fine with her sexuality. It's a shame Crystal was a setting update. They could have just gone for a period piece.

It is pretty funny, but I also find it interesting from an auteurist perspective. Pretty much all of Ikuhara's subsequent heroes have to look inside to understand what kind of people they are, and having attained that knowledge, must leave the world. Usagi is conversely someone who refuses to look at herself honestly and gains the world.

It's weird seeing a Sailor Moon thread so dead. I got into it pretty late; only within the past few months did I take it off my backlog and actually watch it. If only Toonami would air Crystal already.

I have read some nice fics on Ao3. FF is harder though, but there's more Usarei and Makoami there at least.

It's not that hard. Tbqh, binging long series just takes a lot of patience. It's easy to get bored or quit. I find it hard enough to watch 2 cor anime, nevermind 60+ episode ones.

It's a great series that deserves its place in anime infamy, however it's a shame many new anime fans haven't actually seen it since it isn't easily accessible (aka it's not on Netfix, Crunchyroll, or tv).

Usagi/Rei, Haruka/Michiru, Rei/Minako and Makoto/Ami are my favorite. I am trying to get into Crystal (I'll buy the manga some other time) but tbqh I don't like Rei in it. She's arguably easier to ship due to her lack of interest in men but she's a lot less appealing than the anime version.

Crystal's adaptions of the first two arcs is a poorly animated mess that sucks out most of what was enjoyable about the characters in the original anime.

The adaption of the third arc did a lot better with animation, and I did manage to get some enjoyment out of it, but that's only because I set an extremely low bar for it.
I went into the season saying that as long as I got cute interactions involving Chibi-usa and Hotaru then I would be satisfied, and the season does deliver in that regard.

Since they do not have corrupted minds they never saw a connection between those two, and let me tell you, most normal people don't.

They're the same character and the human incarnation doesn't appear until a good long while. You don't have to be much of a degenerate to raise an eyebrow, particularly after the "I'm not going to visit you again until you get your loli body back" incident.

I'm going to have to call bull here. The human form didn't come in until we were around three quarters into the series, and they were clearly shipping them long before then.

Remember how many of the everyday plots in SuperS revolved around romance, and a confused Chibi-usa would sit in the attic and discuss it with Pegasus who would try and spin the conversation to be about their relationship in some way?
There was also the time she started to get undressed in front of Pegasus which caused him to start blushing profusely. That was right around the time he started living in her attic.

I had no interest in shipping Chibi-usa with a guy in general, and certainly not a creeper horse, but the romantic overtones were too overt not to notice.

It's shameful but for years my only memory of Sailor Moon was a scene of Chibiusa hugging a unicorn. I thought it was a fake memory until I learned that actually happened. I thought the unicorn was female at least.

Chibiusa certainly is a Kid Appeal, almost self-insert, character. I don't know how Hotaru fits into it though.

You know how in relationships the one who loves less wins? It's basically a fantasy of being in that position. Hotaru's the one who initiates all the gay moments and says the gay things like compare herself and Chibiusa to Usagi and Mamoru. Chibiusa goes along with it and seems to like it, but not enough to tell the pedo horse to back off. The same thing happens with Haruka in the manga's third arc, in which her relationship with Michiru is brushed aside so Usagi can get the dokis from being desired by an older girl.

By the way my first sailor moon pairing was Minako x Makoto, I blame the anime, they had a few episodes together and stuff
