Honestly, new Lara doesn't seem to desire anyone either. She doesn't act any differently around the red head from Rise for example, which was slightly disappointing. She mostly just wants to go discover shit and increasingly to kill people given her more pronounced bloodlust in the second game. I'd love it if they brought Sam back, all they have to say is that Himiko's soul merged with hers or got kicked out or whatever, the good thing about an asspull like the one that put Sam into the asylum is that it can be undone by another asspull if necessary.

Believe me I'm aware of the sequel. I'm hoping the comics correct it but we'll see. At the very least Lara despite having huge daddy issues in Rise acknowledges Sam is more important in the comics and resolves to save her.

I'd like to also make a fan comic while getting in some tablet practice with Lara researching the soul and going in an adventure to free Sam of Himeko's influence and whatnot but I've never done anything so ambitious before.

Fang and Vanielle and Max and Chloe are two canon /u/ pairings in games that Square was involved in. Although it should be noted that Life is Strange and Tomb Raider Square Enix was just the producer not the developer.

That being said when dontnod was looking for a producer everyone wanted them to change Max to a guy. Square was the only company to allow Max to stay a girl thus ensuring lesbian content.

So I'd say it's not Square who has a problem with Lara x Sam it's probably Crystal Dynamics.

Even Kaz a lesbian character in the comics feels like an afterthought to appease Lara x Sam shippers.

You know a lot of the focus, understandably so, is Sam getting possessed. But really Sam's whole life after Yamatai went down hill; cut off from her family money cause their investment into Lara's expedition went down the crapper, struggling to scrounge up money on her own, insecurities about her relationship with Lara, slow spiral into insanity, secretly captured by Trinity and presumably experimented on, and finally fully possessed by Himeko.

What in the actual fuck?! Poor girl needs a hug and then some.

I don't even think the whole "Sam is actually possessed by Himiko" thing isn't bad in and of itself. SniperCT used that in a fic and it was pretty good and if I was CD I would have used that to spark the plot of Rise. I mean they were all "read this comic and novel since it ties into Rise!" and it does shit actually since nothing is acknowledged in the game. The whole game could've been about Lara on the search of some artifact to help Sam but NOPE.

No hope, I fully expect that whoever plays her will influence a bunch of art just like Jolie did.

I hope Shadow is like Legends/Underworld with her going to various places but that seems wholly unlikely. Either way it needs to wrap up Trinity so probably a crippling blow will be dealt to them and they'll forever be a shadow of themselves that splinter. Would be surprising if Natla popped up.

I haven't really been hearing too much buzz about Sam in the comics which is odd considering what happened.

The Tomb Raider wiki hasn't updated her page in awhile. It just mentions how Sam now fully under Himiko's control escaped the asylum with five other patients.

On a related note it's doubtful they'll officially address Lara's sexuality since in the 20 year book they say they want Lara to be who the viewer wants her to be... more or less.

Really? Through out the game Sam repeatedly calls Lara sweetie, Lara is willing to risk everything to save Sam, and they spend the better part of the game shouting each other's names.

Sam comforts and sticks by Lara when Roth dies and when Reyes gets snippy with Lara.

Not to mention the comics which repeatedly state that even though they are so different they are inseparable, bordering on the star-crossed lovers trope at times.

And thankfully Lara points out in the comics how stupid she was getting wrapped up in trying to save her already dead father when her still living totally not girlfriend needed her.

Old Lara was essentially a bloodthirsty sociopath whose primary goals in life consisted of
1. Nicking old shiny shit to stick in her basement,
2. Gleefully murdering everyone who thought it should be in their basement instead and
3. Personally overseeing the extinction events of multiple predatory species.

Its somewhat telling that her most popular yuri ship was essentially with herself, you couldn't really imagine her with anyone. New Lara is a lot more human but I'm starting to worry she's getting stuck in her own rut of "Survivor with daddy issues that will be resolved at the end of the game so we can reintroduce them next time". Maybe it's just me being older now but I've found myself wondering what exactly they're trying to with Lara as a character now, and if the character of "Lara Croft" isn't inherently limited.

Interestingly enough this is addressed in the 20 year book. It's Classic Lara who was the sociopath and they tried to make Legends Lara slightly less of a sociopath by having her trying to learn what happened to her mother and talking Amanda down and letting Shadow Lara live.

Haven't read the whole section on Survivor Lara yet but I gotta agree the daddy issues are getting old. I just hope it's over with Rise and that the plot with Sam is resolved in a favorable fashion.

To top it off, the game writer outright said on Twitter she was writing Croft saving her girlfriend even if it wasn't exactly canon. I stopped counting the number of guys Lara outright murders to save Sam and the friends from the Endurance she sacrifices (including the sole possible male romantic interest; damn that was satisfying).

The game ends with Lara carrying Sam down the mountain bridal style while a rainbow fills the sky. It's not even subtext by the end. Makes it more disappointing that CD/Squeenix tried to sweep it all under the rug.

Well, you have to remember that Tomb Raider got rebooted because the series was dead in the water. They'd pretty much done everything they could with Old Lara's character. So I'm not happy, but also not surprised, that two games into the new series they're starting to hit the wall again. Rise being a carbon copy of TR2013 with a few plot elements swapped around is worrisome but I'm waiting til Shadow to make a final decision on it.

To be honest gameplay is the least of my concerns. After all I remember when they where calling Uncharted a spiritual successor to Tomb Raider. If gameplay is fun and works I expect to see it used elsewhere. After all we have like three games now that use either the Dark Souls formula (Salt and Sanctuary) or gameplay similarities (Nioh, and at least one other game I can't remember the name of).

Well, the main problem I have is that we wouldn't have to settle for one or the other.
But it's not as if people care enough to make it a point to inform the devs (or more likely publishers) of this.

Unfortunately I haven't played Rise yet as I'm hoping to get a current gen console for that and I admittedly am not very interested in playing the Uncharted games. I did however enjoy the gameplay of the 2013 Tomb Raider. Getting headshots with the bow never got old for me.

So according to the Tomb Raider wiki Sam was experimented on by Trinity with the Divine Source despite the fact that Lara destroyed it.

These experiments caused Himiko to awaken and now Lara who was also briefly captured is now looking for a magic mirror. She believes the Wei Mirror will be able to rip Himiko out of Sam.

Sam is indeed not present in Rise. The only character they brought back was Jonah, and even he's only around for like 10 minutes and you have to rescue his ass instead, which is much less satisfying.

For Dishonored 2, Emily has a lover named Wyman. You choose whether Wyman is male or female, but you never actually see them so it's kind of a moot point, they're basically just there for some background fluff. Emily is far more interested in murder-stabbing everyone who crossed her.

I can see where the other anon is coming from but the games in the survivor continuity aren't exactly open world. Crystal describes them as set piece areas that are connected by larger explorable "hubs" and for the most part I'd agree. If things didn't seem so linear or locked away at times.

Well I'm digging into Rise and while I've already seen a let's play experiencing it first hand is different. The story is painfully generic but damn it's fun to play. I'm also glad the outfits are actually awesome instead of being boring.

Needless to say I'm upset by the lack of Sam. Is she still rampaging across Europe possessed by Himiko?

The main problem with Rise's "story" is that it's the exact same thing as TR2013 with a few plot elements switched around (The isolated cultists are your friends this time!). The only appreciable changes to Lara herself are that instead of learning to believe in herself she's carting around massive daddy issues instead and that she's considerably both far more willing to kill and increasingly more excited about it as the game goes on.

The last issue I read of the Tomb Raider comic had Sam fully possessed and escaping. The wiki hasn't updated in forever and last I heard Himiko/Sam is rampaging across Europe and Lara is looking for a magical mirror that can save Sam.

Yeah but at this point Crystal Dynamics is essentially the kings of wasted opportunity and redundancy. The whole Lara saving Sam thing could be another game. With Lara racing around the world to find the stuff needed for the excorcism ritual. I believe a few anons above discussed this previously.

Of course this ignores that this entire scenario renders the first two game's plots null since Lara failed to keep Sam from being possessed and she failed to keep the Divine Source from Trinity since they used its fragments to awaken the piece of Himiko inside Sam.

It's difficult getting into Rise's generic story cause of this.

Pretty much. Its a little weird since the project seems to be split into three different parts. One being a homage to the old Tom Raider, with Lara and her evil clone fucking, then some Sam/Lara stuff with their old models and then there's the stuff where she uses the new Lara model and is being fucking cheeky and uses an edited Faith model for an upgraded Sam.

Cause most of the Tomb Raider comics aren't labeled even when they shift to a new arc.

The latest arc from dealt with resolving the Sam being possessed thing and it started on an issue #7 but there are two issue #7s one for a a different arc.

The one starting with the possession plot has Himiko on it.

I don't have all the issues but Rhianna was a big Lara x Sam fan so she would at least try to sneak Sam in when she could.

The comics aren't necessary and just going through this thread could probably get you up to speed.

But once again it all boils down to what you are looking for.

Also goddamnit! Got the definitive edition of Tomb Raider for the PS4 just to see the differences between it and the 360 version and the biggest difference is the PS4 version crashes constantly.

Although this time it seems to have corrupted the save. Then again a few others have reported being able to play it after a day or two.

If I have to replay it I'll wait awhile.
