But they were definitely constantly hanging out there, practicing kendo with the girls, going to meets with them etc. And as mentioned one starts off as part of a couple. There are some glimpses of subtext too, but there's definitely more het and nothing solid yuri-wise at all. I do have a vague memory of some yuri played for humor only involving an extremely minor side-character that shows up eventually but I can't trust my brain on that.

If you want to write a trans character, write original fiction. You don't have to be Sunrise to write your own original story and publish it on whatever they use nowadays.

Don't slap trans issues onto fictional characters who do not fit that description. If you want to write fanfiction, don't make the characters act OOC. Making Rins trans is definitely OOC although I can see where they are coming from since it's been taken to a logical absurdity. To put it simply, there's a world of difference between identifying as another gender and feeling down because you don't fit the stereotype. I'd argue they are doing the cause of diversity greater harm by assuming females who are not acting in a stereotypical way and hence have issues with it as 'trans.' It'd be like saying every female soccer play is trans. Or every male who prefers cooking and knitting over sports wants to be a girl.

We can accept the show will probably never have an actual relationship. However, fanfiction which pairs characters together is far from being as problematic as what I mention above. At least in shipping fanfiction, authors usually make an effort to make sure the characters stay in character and act like what they are supposed to act like in the show.

The problem with Trans Rin is that it's definitely not her character. Her problem was that she didn't fit the stereotypical female and hence never got over being bullied for it. That's what her character is. Someone who still hasn't gotten over being bullied for not fitting societal norms. Never did she ever say or imply she identifies as a male.
