Let us presume he really is a massive twat and his translations are not that great, the problem is that no-one else is translating the Dengeki articles into English. So like any very unpopular anime that has no sub group, there is no alternative. Even if we were to learn Japanese it would take months if not years to get to a at least decent reading and comprehension stage. We would have to wait a long time to actually read and understand the Dengeki articles. Consequently, it is probably better to get consistently translated stuff from Lucia even if he is not the best translator. That way you can stay up to date.

I wasn't around during the original run so I wouldn't know. As a casual I'd heard of it but it wasn't like something people were dying to get into. I just saw it as another idol anime to ignore. I remember Madoka being pushed extremely hard as the best thing ever back when it aired but it still isn't main stream. Anime that are main stream usually get everything translated quickly like DB, One Piece and all that stuff. Even a lot of Gundam works aren't translated yet in the west or in a timely manner. Novels are pretty hard too because of how much work they require. That could be why some Love Live stuff isn't translated.

There really is a lot of stuff. In the past 2-3 years especially, when μ's got so big the project and group were described as a "social phenomenon" in some media outlets, the amount of official articles, interviews, event coverage, TV/livestream appearances and so on has snowballed. Add to that the growing solo careers of the individual members and their own ongoing shows, singles, albums, guest appearances...

Even if you were to follow only the characters and not the cast, they were still a regular mainstay in Dengeki G's Magazine, and currently have at least one ongoing column dedicated to them. The second SID series is also neither fully translated nor licensed in English, although a number of fan translations for certain chapters are out there.

While translation/fansub groups such as LoveEcho and Nyamazing based in China/Taiwan are/were very productive and up-to-date, there aren't such comparable groups in the English-using fandom. From what I see, English translation tends to be done by one person, who often also handles typesetting/timing/encoding and/or other administrative tasks, and the extra work eats into what already is limited time. Furthermore, these "major" groups don't need to translate everything on their own because there are other groups and teams for cast members/characters who take on certain projects, like Rippi's Jinseidou podcast. Again, such member-centric projects or groups are barely existent in the English-using fandom, if at all.

The SIDs follow the animated storyline more closely while incorporating elements from Kimino's initial setting and concepts. 9 were released following the first anime season, and 3 more in the second SID series which is, at least in name, ongoing. Although the street dates for the Honoka-Kotori and Rin-Hanayo SIDs have been pushed back again and again.

So in summation: 3 volumes of original manga (supposedly ongoing) + 3 volumes of original SID manga (one for each year group) + 9 original SIDs + 3 SIDs in the second series (supposedly ongoing) = at least 18 books, not counting what is not yet compiled.

And there's the History of Love Live book which is a hugely informative monster in itself.

These brought to mind how some poorly-written OOC garbage in English, like Soldier Wars and such, were strangely well-received when those fics were translated to different languages. It's mere anecdotal evidence, but I've seen some fic writers who do quite fine in their native languages praise such translated fics when there isn't much cause to, and when even the translators' best efforts are not always enough to make up for what the originals lacked in the first place: ICness, a grasp on character dynamics, interesting plotlines or a good take on what might otherwise be cliché, etc.

Is it just a "grass is greener on the other side" mentality? Conversely, do we just embellish in our own heads fics we can barely understand, because they are in a different language, when they actually aren't so good?

No, they'll win, just not this season. Season one has been building up on them qualifying for the Love Live, than winning it.

Also, that's what the first season of the original Love Live was. μ's dropped out because Honoka pushed herself too hard, but the school was saved anyway. Then, the following episodes dealt with μ's questioning their roles as school idols after accomplishing their goal, which ended in them continuing because they genuinely loved it.

Although, I would like a season of Aqours winning the Love Live and adjusting to their newfound fame, because the previous series only touched briefly on that. It would be especially interesting, considering the country bumpkin status the Sunshine cast has.

I think it's not so much as to what fans want, but more about how the anime has been pretty clear on what pairings it enforces. ChikaRiko, KananMari and RubyMaru are all based on clear character arcs in the show and not just speculation. Yoshiko, You and Dia have not had those strong moments with anyone yet, so fans seem to be just playing with different possibilities. It probably has helped the Yoshimaru cause that Yoshiko has gotten at least 6 lines more with Maru including the fact that they've been made childhood friends. Funnily enough, Yoshimaru had even less pre-anime basis than YoshiRiko. The First Year interaction can be summarised as Maru fawning over Ruby and Yoshiko was just there. According to this, there's some 5000 high schools (upper secondary schools) in Japan. If there's about as many in the Love Live verse, each of them should have an average of 1.4 school idol groups, assuming it's primarily a high school thing.

I'm honestly really curious how the anime will handle You being hurt over Chika and Riko being together. I'm surprised it's not only being addressed, but has been slowly building up from one episode to next. One would assume it would follow the loose storyline of the 2nd PV, but the anime didn't follow the 1st PV much for the formation of Aqours (original series matched some key scenes from the 1st PV of µ's), so who knows.

Also curious if You's conflicted feelings over Chika and Riko will be filled with gay undertones. Sunshine has been surprising more gay than anyone imagined, with Mari and Kanan's no-hug drama being a lover's spat, and the deep bond between Chika and Riko throughout this season - further sealed with last week's "I Love You." Will You be hurt by feeling left out? Or by realizing too late her feelings for Chika?
