As much as I've been enjoying Sunshine, the never-ending μ's references made it hard to appreciate it as its own thing. While it doesn't 100% justify all the μ's namedropping, the latest episode showed it was crucial to the overall narrative. With the Love Live competition changing so dramatically after the first series and now featuring over 7ks contestants, Aqours have to be more than competent to stand out.

The meta narrative of Aqours fighting to escape from the shadow of μ's is playing out very well, I think.

It is refreshing to see Aqours fight for their worth, while μ' basically had their fame handed to them on a silver platter. Even with the overdone references, Sunshine S1 is succeeding where SIF S1 failed, most notably in executing its drama. Sunshine is what a more polished version of SIF would have been.

I'm also enjoying Chika far more as a leader than Honoka around this time. Chika trying so hard to put on a strong face for her team and shoulder all the blame is more enduring to watch, than Honk disbanding μ's for her own personal failures.

Sunshine is also really good with the gay, too.

With the group in such a sorry state and the third years having a civil war, how can they hope to achieve anything in 4 episodes?

With everything fully out in the open and the big arc of first and second years going zero, we can actually get time devoted to the third years moving forward properly. Plenty time for that.

A lot gets made in fanon about Nico being a career idol and hiding her relationship with Maki, but isn't it also interesting to imagine scenarios where she doesn't? It's fiction to start with, and I think Nico's fans knowing that she's got another side to her besides her cutesy idol persona is fun too. So it would be a poorly kept secret how Nico is harsh and sarcastic beneath the cuteness, but even then, the public wouldn't really know it all, because only Maki gets to see the third level deep, which the essentially good and big-hearted Nico.

The inconsistency between how she was in earlier episodes and recent episodes is because so little screentime and development was given to her, leading the audience to fill in blanks on their own and having to reconcile the portrayal they see with what has been depicted or discussed already.

"Shipping war" is a juvenile and stupid term for juvenile and stupid behaviour, not to mention terribly outdated. It also is not and was not happening. Repeatedly bringing it up will only encourage those trying to incite arguments, which we should be ignoring anyway.

Let's talk about Sunshine episode 9. For all that the third-years' backstory and plot threads dragged on until this point, the episode did manage to finally wrap things up. Maybe the remaining episodes will push the story forward some more, now that all 9 members have come together as a group.

I really loved this episode. Kanan being the person who cares the most about Mari it's simply sweet.

The same could be said of pairing up Hanamaru and Yoshiko, prior to the anime.

There aren't many expectations for YohaRiko in the anime given Hanada's penchant to write however he likes without any regard for established settings and designs. When there is any suggestion toward it at all, such as in the recent 3 episodes, chances are that the staff put it in without much consideration.

That said, KyanRika are still a thing and they've shown their support for the ship, so don't write it off just yet. Unlike say, UmiEli, when both CVs were more into other ships; Rikyako herself talked about her preferred pairing name, they've both fed fuel to the shipping and/or blurred IC/OOC lines cracking wise at each other's expense, etc. Even the anime episodes that have already aired make references to the cast's antics, not to mention the title of episode 10 itself. The ship is one of those cases which won't fall out of focus completely, especially when the staff catch on, if they haven't already.

Welp, Kanan gets the most deserved slap I've seen a while. I loathed the "hurt them to protect them" explanation and all this angst would have been avoided if Kanan simply just TALKED TO MARI.

At least they hugged and made up and the KananMari ship is now strong. Lets hope they Kanan will now be back to the fun, sporty girl she's supposed to be and this overwrought subplot is forgotten.

What I appreciated most in this exchange was that instead of hitting Mari back, as she could have done and the buildup was hinting at, Kanan initiated a hug, calling back to their past and also the previous episode.

What made Kanan/Mari work, even before the anime when they were one of the pairings with more material to go off from, was the unconditional fondness they had for each other. Kanan would go along with Mari's shenanigans, at most maybe with a dry remark thrown in.

No matter how angry or upset she was, Kanan has never physically hurt Mari. Contrast for instance Dia, who explodes easily and is confrontational when set off. The closest Kanan has come to causing any physical harm to Mari was in episode 9 when trying to make Mari let go of her. On the other hand, the third-years' storyline in the anime shows how much emotional hurt they both caused, mutually.

That episode was stupid and not all the Yuri in the world could save it. Out of all the Idol Drama I've seen so far, this maybe the worst one. After all the build up about how DiaKanaMari were too overwhelmed or weren't good enough to be a School Idol, they took all that out and replaced it with 'Kanan throws the comp to make Mari leave for a better school.'

Thematically, the new revelations is disappointing especially after Episode 7 tried to drill in the theme that there is always someone better be it Aqours to everyone else in the top 30 or Saint Snow to everyone else above them. What's the theme now? Girl A thinks something is good for Girl B so she does stupid things until Girl B gets what's good for her?

Not to mention it ruined any build up to the MariKanan reconciliation. Instead of two girls getting over the past, we now have the jarring moment of one girl finding out the other girl did the stage equivalent of throwing the match in some weird plan to convince her to enter a better school. If you want to know how unromantic this sounds- imagine girl a telling girl b 'I threw the match we could have saved our beloved school/gym/whatever because I want you to go overseas.'

There's also the plotholes this opened up. Could Kanan not have done it anyway other than disbanding her school idol group? Like how about telling Mari how she felt? Or convincing her to leave only after the year's end and possibly doing everything they could to save their school electric boogaloo. Why did Kanan tell Mari to stop raising Chika's hope if she was more concerned about Mari's education?

In terms of characterisation, I can't tell if this is Kanan or not. I suppose this is her weird anime Kanan way of being nice but all this last episode has confined Kanan to the bottom of my character list now.

As for the KanaMari moments, yeah they were nice but as I mention now that I know about Kanan's weird little plan it sucks any romance out of it.

I think the problem is more in the setup, rather than the payoff. Kanan and Dia trying covertly to nudge stubborn Mari into the right direction and stop her from wasting her potential, could be a decent enough plot line if done correctly. But yeah, as it is now, it suffers from the classic anime melodrama "why not just talk it out" problem you mentioned. Especially Kanans behavior towards the subject should be adjusted to make more sense in hindsight so the twist would be less jarring.

Thematically I think this feels very similar to Kotoris arc in the OG series. Choosing between your dream and a career. This time with other people mixed up in your decision making. The message stumbles slightly due to the bad drama, but it's still easy to get what they were going for.
As for the "there is always going to be someone better than you" revelation. We moved past that already after it peaked with Chikas breakdown scene. Even then, the KananMari plot line is a separate entity that doesn't necessarily have to have the exact same theme as long as it contributes to the overall theme of the show, which it kind of does.

I don't know if by characterization problems, you mean the fact that anime Kanan is different from Kanan in the other material, but anime versions of the character being different has always been a thing in LL. beyond that, the only actually inconsistent character in the show has been Dia.

Personally, I'm fine with the current state of things. The initial reveal of Kanans plan did raise my eyebrow, but the following scenes being so well handled redeemed it a lot. I do have decent enough tolerance for stupid anime bullshit though, as long as I can see the writers intentions behind the botched execution. The shipping aspect of course helped things too and I've certainly seen much, much worse. So eh, I'll take it.

I remember Dia explicitly stated they couldn't perform. This episode arguably backtracks from that, goes off on a tangent and sets us up for a really bad twist ending.

It's easy to see what they are going for but when the writers do it so badly as to make it seem like M Night Shyamalan was writing this anime they should and ought to be criticised for it. Bad writing written with an amazing vision is still bad writing and saying it's easy to glean the writer's intention does not change that.

Secondly, the KananMari plot is not separate for the reasons I stated above. The Third Years implicitly failed according to Dia because they couldn't sing on stage having been overwhelmed by others.

When I bring up characterisation, I mean Kanan was always portrayed as kind and friendly. This Kanan has a weird way of being kind and it really is. She straight up did not sing and tried to disband the group to get someone she liked to go on an amazing path. I suppose that's the best of intentions but a poor decision nonetheless. Let's say there's a soccer team and one club player gets an offer to play at a better who's topping the chart. She rejects it and then her friend on the team deliberately throws the game and tries to disband the team to force her mate elsewhere. Am I somehow suppose to praise this? Because this is a rough analogy of what I got from this episode.

Is there worse? Maybe there is but that doesn't mean this is a very unsatisfying and a very bad ending to what was an otherwise decent Third Year arc.

I think we can write this off as some contrived way to create KananMari shipping. Love Live has never really been that good with melodrama, so this really isn't different. I'm sure most of us here are use to seeing lack of communication as a common yuri troupe by now.

Let me put it this way, the big sell point of Love Live are the songs. Everything that was revealed in this episode also went with the lyrics of the new song. That's my belief of how the writing came to be.

So if we piece this episode and episode 6, we get that Kanan hugged Mari from the moment they met.

I don't see how the new episode contradicts that when Chika and co. had their best performance at Tokyo, but failed miserably due to how unmemorable they were.

I also don't believe the show was pushing that theme to begin with. It's really more about Aqours needing to finds its own voice and not rely on mere competence to pull through. This is seen with Dia's speech about the 2nd years' performance only being successful because of the community, and Mari's speech about the amount of effort not equaling worthwhile results.

This kind of "they can't talk it out" is a dramatic trope/cliche/whatever present in tons of anime - tons of entertainment in general. That of course doesn't make it good, but it does make it something you should expect and understand at this point. As another anon said, it's not dissimilar to what Kotori did in S1.

I don't believe that that was really supposed to be the series' theme at all, even if it was the theme of the episode. And this latest development doesn't necessarily change that either. You could easily shape it to Kanan not thinking that they were good enough to go on anyway (because 'there's always someone better'), and so her sacrifice was the better option.

This is also entirely subjective. Kanan pulled one of those "sacrifice her happiness/success for that of her beloved's happiness/success" plans, which has always been romantic in my eyes. If it was a sprained ankle, you could probably still dance but it'd be extremely painful and you'd be slowed down. Afterwards it'd take about a few weeks to recover. This is completely different from Nanjo who has a genetic condition where her knees got severely injured from strain.

As for 'Mari's future,' again I point out there seems to be so many alternatives like only leaving at the end of the year after participating in the Love Live. Or if that's not possible, Mari could have left and DiaMari could have performed as a duet.

I understand that was what they were getting at but it was still a bad plan as you concede and hence making it very unromantic. Putting someone's needs first does not mean you have to do something unreasonable. That certainly doesn't mean tearing down the whole organisation because someone won't leave for something better. Let's say you work at a supermarket and you find out a co-worker got an offer to work for Goldman Sachs. Yes, it maybe stupid for them not to leave but would you then deliberately not work and attempt to shut it all down to make them leave?

Basically Kanan shut down Aqours, took the risk of giving up the school all so Mari can leave. Hence, we ended up in a situation where the school still risks being closed down and two years later everyone seems unhappy. While there's one positive for Mari, there's the two negatives that come out of this options. Even if an overseas education was good Mari, Kanan chose the least convenient route to get there and the one filled with more harms (school still shutting down for example) then benefits.

While the perverted character being too shy to fondle her love interest is evidence of a big push, her deciding to do it anyways isn't really evidence of a sinking. It just isn't pushed as hard. See Eila and Sanya from Strike Witches for an example of a megapush that does this.
