It's been nearly ten years and literally the only things I know about those series are "It's a magical girl anime where you lose your powers if you have sex with a guy, or something. And Shiznat is a thing".

Like 85% of the fandom is just Shiznat. People really like Shiznat. It used to be one of the top 5 yuri couples back in the 2000s and early 2010s.

Natsuki was straight in the first Mai Hime manga but Shizuru was gay... and had no focus or powers.

The Mai Hime EXA manga had Natsuki and Shizuru have feelings for each other but it was literally Mai Hime Bad End. On the plus seeing Natsuki curb stomp Mai was fun.

The Mai Otome manga was just a author self insert bull shit where a guy became the most powerful Otome and even Shizuru wasn't above teasing him. To say nothing of the Otome basically being his unknowing harem(they think he's a girl).

In short stick to the anime.

I have heard of a visual novel where Shizune kills herself if you woo Natsuki but I could never find a source. Is that legit?

Yes it was legit. Stupid concept but I liked the shojo art. Even have a figure of Natsuki summoning Duran based off of that VN but that's about the only thing good I can say of it.

The only time Natsuki has ever been interested in a guy was the crappy first manga and the VN.

As far as the Otome manga as I said it was just a mess that should be avoided at all costs.

Were they produced independently? Usually in such scenarios the manga ends up released before the anime (or held until the anime is ready to air so they can be simultaneous) but MH started airing several months before the first chapter of the manga was published.

I don't know, I really enjoyed Mai Otome/Arashi Manga. Despite the harem thing, Natsuki y Shizuru seemed way gay for each other.

Further one scene where Shizuru says she and Natsuki used to "have fun" doesn't make up for the harem shit, MANshiro, Shizuru shoving his face in her breasts, or the Otome being turned into strippers.

Agreed the whole Izuna Dropping an android from orbit was beyond awesome.

It also had a girl that out Shizurued Otome Shizuru if I remember correctly.

Still Anime Mai Hime Shizuru will always be the definitive Shizuru for me and EXA Natsuki will always be the definitive Natsuki for me.

I'd love to see EXA Natsuki wipe the floor with MANshiro. All the power in the world can't save you if your opponent can dodge point blank nuclear fire blasts

EXA Natsuki isn't even written to be all powerful like MANshiro(who I'm aware one shotted Kagutsuchi) but EXA Natsuki still manages to kick everyone's ass effortlessly.
