Tv shows, movies, and theatre. Doesn't matter if your ships are canon or not.

Pic is from Madchen En Uniform. It's a 1930s German film about a girl who falls for her female teacher at a boarding school. It honestly creeps me out but is historically important.

I looked over the catalog several times. That thread is not labeled as a movie general, it's about a specific film.

Either way, then just tv and theatre then.

Doesn't need to be labelled, the other thread serves the purpose of tv and theatre as well

Yes it does. How are people gonna know without the proper title or subject? Plus I checked over the thread and it seems focused on that one film. It's not a general.

It was literally the only type of thread of its kind up. You also didn't check over it hard enough because they talked about other movies. It was co-opted into such a thread. You should definitely lurk some more.

Synopsis
Director Oh Soo-jin had a taste of failure with her first movie. She thinks about a fancy come back but no one wants her now. Then one day, opportunity finds her but it's an erotic film...
She is "Sky Girl" Oh Soo-jin.

Seven years ago, Oh Soo-jin made a movie called "Sky Girl" which resulted in only 20,000 views. She ground her teeth to recover from her failure by making a second movie. One day she gets a call from Park, a gangster and movie director who asks her to make a porn movie with him. The actress of the movie is an AV girl from Japan. Oh Soo-jin denies the offer and returns home but all that's waiting for her are unpaid rent and bills. Oh Soo-jin calls Park after watching the AV girl's porn and suggests she turns the whole set into a women-only production. She has a week to film the movie with 100 million won. Can she do it?

If you looked at the specifics a little closer there, Spinoza, you'd notice that 1930s were modern and very aware of sexuality (Freud was very popular) and that romantic friendships between adults was decidedly a 19th century thing.

I'm pretty sure that's from the inferior 1950s remake. I don't think it's creepy at all, even by normal standards of morality. Lots of teenagers have crushes on their teachers and it's not like Fräulein von Bernburg would have pursued a relationship with Manuela, even though I think she probably had a thing for her too, at least in the original.

The correct title is Mädchen in Uniform, by the way.

It's vague if the teacher likee her back or if she was just allowing a schoolgirl crush. I go with the latter interpretation personally.

There are different levels of conservative. Freaking out over lesbian characters is very conservative. I didn't expect that, I thought Korea was less conservative. America has been fine with lesbians on tv for years.
>>
>>2119927
> Freaking out over lesbian characters is very conservative.
>very conservative

I don't really see how, it's what basically the entire world thought for all of history until the last 50 or so years, and then only in America and Europe... Very conservative would be like wanting to restore the Stuarts, or in Korea's case bringing back Confucian monarchy.

Asia's attitudes are only as "good" as they are because American media is so influential globally. China has already banned homosexuality on TV after beginning to re-assert itself and I pretty much expect Korea to follow suit as American decline continues.

America was conservative 50 years ago too, you know.

>Why can Japan have yuri anime and anime with yuri themes in the 1970's, and in the U.S. it took until 2014 to show two adult women holding hands in the final seconds of a children's cartoon?

isn't Japan still struggling to legalize gay marriage on the national level? i get the impression they don't actually think lesbians are real sometimes.

Not saying the US isn't conservative though. people forget about the entire middle of the country sometimes, and the south.
>>
>>2120135
I believe that the problem is that the Japanese constitution (made by the Americans after World War II) defines marriage as being between man and woman. Japan does recognise same-sex marriages between a Japanese woman and a non-Japanese woman if the foreign woman's country of origin has legalized gay marriage, and it seems that some regions allow civic unions. According to Wikipedia polls show that the Japanese support for gay marriage is comparable to that of the United States. I don't know how they fixed it in the US but I think that was probably easier than changing the constitution.

>>
>>2120445
It's short and campy. I think the entire 1st season was movie length, which makes it worth the time if you are in need of awkward lesbianing. In an /u/cean filled with dead fish this one at least wasn't floating and rotten until the 2nd season.

Mother, May I Sleep With Danger would have overtaken it but it too failed to achieve greatness because of a stupid ending.
>>
>>2120457
Speaking of Mother, May I sleep with danger, did a link ever appear for it? Also how bad is the ending?
>>
>>2120460
Its been up for awhile now and shouldn't be hard to find. I don't know if there are any official ways to get it.

To spoil the ending it was a good end where the main lesbians survive but then it cuts off to the villains who apparently survive too. And it just ends. We don't see any of the post-conflict main couple and it ends on a weird note where the evil vampires go creep on new victims. It was probably symbolic but it went over my head and took the enjoyment out of it. It is confusing as well because a vampire dies at the beginning but these vampires survive.

Overall I recommend it solely because the good parts are well done. The annoying parts are tolerable. Par for the course with decent western /u/.

Carol, directed by Todd Haynes and starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. It's about a 1950s department store worker who starts a very tentative affair with an older married woman. It's based on a Patricia Highsmith novel that's most notable for having a happy end despite being from the fifties. The film keeps it.

Are any of the Carmilla adaptations actually good? Lots of them seem pretty average and with a pronounced tendency to make her bisexual (which isn't a problem for me usually, but come on, being a lesbian vampire is what she's famous for).

>>
>>2122258

The main character is completely straight for the first 3 seasons, then comes season 4, main character gets a female love interest and this story arc lasts through the whole season. Everyone should know by now that western /u/ can't shake the urge to kill off lesbians the moment they find happiness. I can think of 5 other well known shows in the last year alone that did it in the same way with a happy scene where things are finally good immediately followed by death. The only show I can think of with main character lesbians who survived is the couple in Wynonna Earp, and that isn't even a good show.

From recent developments I saw about SU it is not the happy lesbian cartoon it was played up to be and I'm glad I held off watching it.

Hard to believe almost all the happy lesbian movies are over a decade old already. D.E.B.S was corny but it did things differently and nothing really came close since. Saving Face is honestly my newest favorite and probably the best depiction of romance I've seen yet (maybe it did it right because it isn't really western /u/ when it is all about eastern culture?). Recent movies I liked enough to watch more than once were Girltrash and Duke of Burgundy but they are weird so most people don't talk about them much.

Because of this thread I ended watching both the original (1931) and the 1958 remake and desu the original is vastly superior: the "forbidden love" aspect is more blatant, the main character and the teacher are more attractive and the technical aspects of the movie are well done considering sound in movies was just achieved a couple of years before its release.

The movie Cracks takes a lot from Mi. It has Eva Green as an idolized teacher in a girl's boarding school who falls for a new student that is not into her THAT way.

I just read the spoilers and it is very edgy. The interview of the director made it sound like the women's roles in the film wasn't about being gay at all, rather a self-important director's view on women desiring beauty. It is all bullshit in my opinion. Here's a gem of a quote from the director that should help you decide: the knife deep-throat nightmare is “where the movie touches upon Jesse’s fear of penetration, and that’s what she imagines.”

From IMDB:
The film contains scenes of strong sexual activity, graphic visual and verbal sex references, a sequence in which a man paints a woman's body with gold paint, and full-frontal nudity. There is also a scene where a woman has sex with a dead corpse.

It basically took a legal challenge to California's Proposition 8, which banned same sex marriage in the state, going all the way to the Supreme Court for same sex marriage to be legal in the US. No one really expected it to happen because at the time the court had a 5-4 conservative majority, but somehow it did.

Here's a summery of the /u/-ish content of the movie and major spoilers about the movie:
-Ruby (Jena Malone) tries to have sex with Jessie (Elle Fanning) character as shown in >>2131127, Jessie rejects her, Ruby tries to rape her, and Jessie pushes her away.
-Ruby then goes to her part time job (applying makeup to corpses at a mortuary) and has sex with a female corpse.
-Two of Ruby's model friends are shown taking a shower together, washing off blood from their bodies while Ruby takes a blood bath.

The sequel isn't as good as the first and there's more drama. But...
There's no cheating. Barely a love triangle. Good end.

TCM gives These Three more than The Children's Hour. For those who don't know, These Three was a censored 1930s adaptation of the play that made it straight instead of gay. It's a good film but a very shoddy adaptation.

>the big climax scene
>Martha just quietly mentions she is in love with her best friends boyfriend
>no violent sobbing and screaming
>no heartwrenching pain

I don't think they ever mentioned what happened to their friendship afterwards either. Martha didn't kill herself in this version.

I almost wish they'd remake the 60s film. It's my favorite lesbian related film and I really want to see the play but afaik it's only been revived in Britain.

I feel you sis, 5th season is going to be shit.
>>
>>2132493

Maybe? I can't remember if I post in other live action threads much.

I am just drawn to the story and character dynami s. It's such an early 20st century tale that couldn't happen after the mid 60s at most. It's rare to see gay related period pieces.
I know many find the ending a downer and maybe even homophobic but I disagree. Martha had such repressed emotional baggage and self-hatred which only got worse when Mary started making up crap. She felt she irreversibly ruined her and Karen's lives and all that drove her to suicide.

The way I see, the play and film are indeed products of a much more homophobic time that made any other kind of ending more or less impossible. However, Hellman, Wyler and MacLaine were all good enough artists to make Martha a believable human being rather than just a stock figure, which is why the play and the film still have worth.

>>

>>
>>2136780
Are there better sources yet? That is the only place with news of this being true.

I want to believe the writers won't burn what's left of Shaw's character but the odds are not in o/u/r favor. I'm too jaded to believe they won't make her flirt with guys again, this time while the Machine uses Root's voice to share her disapproval or some other equally "zany" character moment that doesn't fit her character or her sociopath tendencies.

>>2136838
I don't see how Root would be comfortable faking her death and remaining hidden after Finch and Reese went on the warpath and almost died. Even if she was injured. Do you really think the spinoff will open with Root in a coma and then it becomes a lesbian buddy cop show? On network cable? Maybe if a streaming service bought it we'd have a chance, but even then I don't see it happening.

It takes away all implications that the teacher might be gay and has way more sympathy for the authoritarian headmistress than Manuela.

The original was pretty vague too. Was the teacher in love with Manuela too or was she letting her have a schoolgirl crush? If she was in love, was it true and sweet or was she a manipulative hebephile? That's the charm of the story. It can be interpreted in numerous ways.

I find it hard to believe there are really less than 5 classic films with a lesbian plot or lesbian subtext. No pre-hays code, niche films, or European films? Seriously? The only ones I can find are The Children's Hour and Madchen In Uniform.

It's a shame there aren't more. I love vintage films but they're so overbearingly hetero. I want more lesbians in the early 20th century.

>>2143473

Really? No one is saying for them to make out and get married. Children have crushes all the time. Does Peanuts creep you out?
>>
>>2144958
Why is that hard to believe? Being gay was not socially acceptable in America before the Hays code. There were some gay people in clubs and the arts scene, but not as part of main stream culture.

As for vintage films with subtext, there's also Rebecca from 1940, Johnny Guitar from 1954, and Queen Christina from 1933.
>>
>>2145021

Between the 1910s and 1960s almost no one thought to write lesbians? That's weird. There were books on it and other media. Not every film has to be a blockbuster hit that cost millions of dollars to make. I've seen plenty of films about unacceptable topics anyway.

I really do hope this movie does well enough that it'll get a physical BD release. I can't wait to see it with official subtitles and also the official extended cut of this movie. So many cut scenes.
>>
>>2145034
There are some pre-60s films with subtext. Aside from the ones mentioned by >>2145021, Young Man with a Horn (1950) implies Lauren Bacall leaves Kirk Douglas for another woman and isn't punished for it. Marlene Dietrich's character in Morocco (1930) wears a suit and kisses a woman as part of a nightclub performance, though her romance is with Gary Cooper. One of the minor characters in The Women (1939) is a lesbian. The title character in All About Eve (1950) is a villainous bisexual who has sex with a woman and does villainous bisexual things. The Wizard of Oz (1939) is of course about Dorothy coming to terms with her lesbianism.

>Has anyone ever watched this movie? It stars Audrey and Shirley and it features 2 teachers who are accused of having a relationship with each other.

Spoilers
I was interested in it because dude vintage lesbos lmao but I didn't actually think there would be anything gay in it, just the accusation of the teachers being gay. But it turns out one of them actually loves the other, and the scene where she confesses hit really close to home.
It's pretty weird at times since it's an old movie but it was really surprising to see a gay character during that time.
Also Shirley is a fucking top tier qt

-

I've seen this several months ago now but this movie will stick with me..idk it's pretty depressing to have an attachment to things that have been over for a long time and there's no real discussion or "fanbase" around it anymore. I'm guessing most people didn't know that an icon like Hepburn starred in a movie featuring an LGBT theme.
Tired of bad endings and drama around being gay but yet this genuinely hit me hard regardless. Guess old timey movies have that charm.

Damn, I know right. I was so frustrated with the ending precisely because there was room for a good one. Like they could've had Catherine move to the same city as Jackie since she was fired from her position as a teacher anyway and her reputation was already compromised around there so she could've tried for a fresh start in a new city and all that. Hell, they could've tried the long distance relationship route even. Just have them end things or a more hopeful note. It was hard to believe that they would just give up on what they have.
I loved the first half of the movie and the way their relationship was depicted. The were all domestic and cute and getting along, it felt sort of anticlimatic when things went to shit because there was no real reason for that to happen. Things could've worked out but I guess like >>2150010 said, only the hets get the happy endings.

It's not the sixties anymore. Lots of lesbian movies have happy endings.

C'mon now. That's an overstatement and you know it. The happy endings are scarce when it comes to lesbian movies.

Fun Home. Based on Alison Bechdel's visual novel memoir. It's about Bechdel exploring her life and relationship with her closeted father as she was coming to terms with her own identity. Interesting construct where events are basically memories interwoven throughout the show. Three actors play Alison at different stages in her life (memoir writing adult, awkward baby dyke college student, sweet but confused 7 year old kid). First Broadway musical to feature a butch lesbian in the lead role. Won a few Tonys including best musical. Great music, solid acting.

It just closed unfortunately. National tour's starting up sometime next month though.

That's too generous. Decent is the farthest anyone should go and that's under duress.
>>
>>2150565
I don't see why. The actors are good and acrobatic, the film moves well despite its length, it does a good job depicting the beginning and end of a relationship and the use of blue in the set design gives it a pleasant unified feel.

It's so weird seeing how quickly fandoms can die. A few years ago iCarly was the shit. It had a huge fandom and I was always a huge Cam fangirl. Cam had a lot of fanfics and I remember I even made amvs for it (though sadly they were lost when that Youtube account was terminated). Now I go into the fanfiction section and it hasn't been that active since 2012. It went from popular to dead so quickly.

...Cam was always amazing and I pretend Seddie was just Sam trying to be less gay.
>>
Out At The Wedding is my favorite lesbian film. LOGO used to give it often back before they stopped being lgbt themed. It's about a straight white woman with a black fiance who fears her family will act racist towards him, so she pretends to be a lesbian. She hires a butch woman to pretend to be her girlfriend however the woman becomes attracted to her recently married sister. It turns out her sister was a closet case who was using her husband as a beard.

>The Wizard of Oz (1939) is of course about Dorothy coming to terms with her lesbianism.

Please elaborate. I thought it was about a girl who gets lost and attacked by an old woman with a shoe fetish, and then escapes with the help of three gay men.

Elphaba and Glinda totally banged in Wicked though.

I'm stealing this from Alexander's Doty's book ( https://com327ncsu.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/doty_flaming_classics.pdf ):

Miss Gulch, being an unmarried woman in early 1900s Kansas, is the local lesbian. Dorothy's both fascinated and repelled by her (one of the farmhands says she could easily go to school a different route that wouldn't let Toto run around her yard)

Everything that happens in Oz is Dorothy's fantasy. Here Miss Gulch is split into two characters, the Wicked Witch and Glinda the Good Witch (the only major Oz character without a real-world equivalent). "Elphaba" embodies all the negative ideas of lesbians Dorothy has learned, while Glinda represents everything Dorothy is starting to desire in women; she's utterly feminine and caring. Dorothy line about not knowing there could be beautiful, good witches is very important here.

The reason Dorothy is so determined to get back to Kansas is because of Aunt Em, the only major real world character without an Oz-equivalent. As an orphan girl alone in the world, Dorothy has developed a child-like crush on her aunt (note that she's supposed to be a little girl, despite being played by a 17-year-old Judy Garland).
>>
>>2155582
I just read that. It's a very good read.
>>
>>2155360

Anyone who has read the books knows Dorothy is totally gay. Only MGM-only people ship her and Scarecrow. In the books she's only seven and is borderline married to Ozma.

>Ozma laughed at the wistful expression in the girl's eyes, and then she drew Dorothy to her and kissed her.
>"Am I not your friend and playmate?" she asked.
>Dorothy flushed.
>"You know how dearly I love you, Ozma!" she cried. "But you're so busy ruling all this Land of Oz that we can't always be together."

Gotta love old-timey romantic friendships.
>>
>>2155654
I like it a lot too. It's intelligent without being too academic and there's a real joy of interpretation there. Unfortunately, I read that the writer died a few years ago.
>>
>>2155360
Nigga please, Ozma and Dorothy are a classic ship.

Shoot is the OTP OAT. Their OTPness transcends even the /u/ subgenre - not since Dexter have we had a more compelling psychopath/sociopath romance.

This semi-AU fanfic is pretty spectacular: archiveofourown.org/series/177194

There have been some decent fix-it fics that give some good justification for The Machine faking Root's death. It's now in my headcanon.

What I hope the show is *not* is a "number of the week" type of procedural. They shouldn't necessarily do too much AI sci-fi either.

I think the most interesting thing to start with is how moral Root will be now that she has no Machine to talk her through life and no higher purpose like helping numbers. Left to her own devices, to get an income and progress the world without that guidance, one wonders whether she will regress back into her amoral self.

And of course while Shaw can be her reason to live well and stay safe, Shaw certainly is not one to provide Root with a moral compass. I think it could definitely be interesting.

The girl who plays Dorothy is meh, but Meghan Ory is hot. Also not a total victory because Mulan got cucked so hard. I was hoping for Mulan/Merida but it never happened.
This show is fucking garbage, but it somehow suckers me in once a season with the promise of lesbians and Lana Parilla looking hot as f.

I admit, I ship a few RL ships between people who likely will never date. I've read Chenzel, Sharja, and a few other stuff. It always makes me feel gross and embarrassed though. I don't get how so many people are into it. Like half of Ao3 is bandom and rl shipping. I can only feel comfortable reading it if the people have been dead for 100+ years, but sadly historical lesbian rl ship fics are rare.
>>
>>2149697
I think it's odd, simply because those people are real and have autonomy.

Even Live action shows have characters that are just that - fictional. They're not real living people. No matter how important a character is to you - animated or not - they're still fictitious.

RL people shipping just strikes me the wrong way, but lots of people do it. I mean, look at the amount of people who get upset when famous people divorce one another.
>>
>>2159215
>I mean, look at the amount of people who get upset when famous people divorce one another.
That seems similar to how a lot of people get upset when an idol has a boyfriend. An illusion that was destroyed?
