It was the 1980s. The first "mirror imaged" printing of the manga by Dark Horse just skipped the pages.
Later the "Omnibus" book form of the Dark Horse manga returned the sex scene.
It just happened to occur at the time that the original 1988 Child Protection and Obscenity Act, itself based on the extremely biased 1986 Meese Comission Report on Pornography was new, and the investors could not afford to wait for the legal wrangling to settle down.
Within two years the Supreme Court struck down the law. Congress defiantly passed a "Child Protection Restoration and Penalty Enhancement Act" in 1990, that was really the same law with slightly different wording and even higher penalties. This one never reached the Supreme court as the Supreme court refused to hear any of the cases the Federal government tried to appeal after the district and circuit courts blocked prosecution on most of its contents. Including specifically drawings of sexual activities, as the government could not explain how drawings of sex acts differed from already protected written descriptions of sex acts.
Technically though the law is still on the books, and every now and then some /anon/ will make panicked posts about how they are going to go to jail for importing manga from Japan into the US after finding the text of the law without reading also the case history.

It's something that has been happening for centuries. It happened with literature. It happened with music. It happened with comic books and right now it's happening with video games. As long as reasonable people keep fighting it, it will go away eventually.

And you really should try GitS. Watch the movie first, then watch Stand Alone Complex. The manga, movies and TV series are all different and just to be absolutely clear, it's not a yuri thing like Pandora. The Major is most likely bisexual and her sexuality is only a really minor aspect of its overall existentialism themes.

I dropped Pandora after the first episode because it wasn't anything like Appleseed let alone GiTS.

While I admit I could have done more research before I watched the first episode (would have saved me 24 minutes of my life) nonetheless the anime just wasn't what I wanted. What I wanted was the same sci fi fare I got from Shirow in his past works- a highly professional female soldier fighting against cyborgs in a cyberpunk world. Pandora was not anything like that.

No, it shouldn't have been like GiTS author is free to write what he wants. I don't blame him for writing what he wants. However I wanted something like GiTS and Pandora just wasn't it. It couldn't measure up to the bar I set and there wasn't any point watching something that I knew I would not like. Hence I stopped watching after one episode.

I understand that Shirow's name being attached to Pandora is pretty misleading to anybody who doesn't do a bit of digging, though. He created the original concepts and draft, but the real author of the series is Rikudou Koushi.

He didn't write it though. He basically just supplied some art designs. Pandora is Rikudou's series, and he's a great writer. I honestly wish Shirou had never been anywhere near it because "it's not GitS :(" is literally almost all of the complaints directed at it.

When FUNimation markets this show, I hope they always use "From the creators of Ghost in the Shell and Excel Saga" as their blurb. It looks exactly like what you'd expect a show from the creators of Ghost in the Shell and Excel Saga to look like. The main problems are that Excel Saga dates back to 1999, so most people haven't heard of it nowadays, and that all anime adaptations of Shirow's works stripped away every trace of the humor he put into his manga.

The thing is though, Pandora does cover similar themes and topics to GitS, but it's from a different perspective. When you're looking at Section 9 you're looking from the perspective of police and soldiers and in the vein of noir you're seeing a lot of dark and shitty parts of this world. Nene however is an idealistic and somewhat naive teenager and so you're getting a much different and in a lot of ways a lot more optimistic perspective on the same sorts of things.

I can't talk about other people, I can only confirm why I didn't like it and take a guess as to why they didn't like it. Is Pandora a quality series on it's own? I don't know. What I do know is that it was not what I wanted to watch and I only needed one episode to objectively know that.

Anon who uploaded the other release here. 1080p is just a waste of space for this show, unfortunately, but I took a very brief look at their 720p release to visually compare against mine. The differences seem negligible, in my opinion. Theirs is sharpened a bit, and has more artifacts. Mine has a weird 1 pixel border.

I stole their subs, so they should mostly be the same. I just changed the font, and removed the occasional meme if I could. I also changed the styling of the OP and ED because I thought they were revolting. My styling sucks too, though.

Also, I noticed a typo I left in the first episode, so I've fixed it and uploaded another version.

It's not shit, it was just underwhelming in every way imaginable, which was a feat for something that ostensibly appeared so colorful and bombastic.

Bad pacing and characters that felt disconnected to the overarching plot. It would have been okay if it was a cyberpunk anime with a more lighthearted story, but it might as well have been a futuristic SoL comedy.

For an simple analogy, it felt more like Mahoromatic than Ghost in the Shell.

That's a good way to explain it, really. From the art/animation to the pacing to the plot, it just felt like there was a good show buried underneath everything that came out. It split itself between SoL and the conspiracy plot going underneath but didn't take advantage of either.

Not really. The anime has only two scenes of yuri interest: Ropponmatsu 2 commiting Black Comedy Rape on Excel, and the last episode where Excel realizes that she and Hyatt have switched bodies and immediately tries to have sex with herself.

Oh, the show was flawed for sure. The series is far too niche to ever actually become successful, but it's a type of niche that I'd been looking for a long time and very much enjoyed.

I just need more series that prominently feature cute yuri, but also have serious plots set in an interesting world. I need more that balance of being able to focus on cute slice of life without being meandering ,and being able to have darker seedier moments without being grimdark.

I'm not claiming that this series does these things perfectly, but it's one of the few yuri series that even tries.
