You have to get your priorities straight if you're watching an action-music show solely for yuri. Yuri is present, but it's not the only thing. The overall story and presentation of GX jumps off the bridge after three episodes. Music for GX is really good though.

Not quite, but it retains its quality more than the plot and character arcs. I would say the seiyuu's performances remain really high quality throughout as well, making their specific antics and interactions still enjoyable, especially in the OVAs.

Speaking of acting I think Carol was fantastic and a great addition. Hopefully they find some bullshit way to utilize her seiyuu again in the future seasons.

Half of S1's plot is basically Hibimiku's relationship straining due to Hibiki's secret job, S2 gave us the gaybies and showed us how yandere Miku could get, and S3 strengthened the gaybies and pretty solidly christened Tsubamari as a ship. Granted that Chris doesn't really get anywhere with anyone and Hibimiku takes a backseat in S3, but the show is plenty gay, even if it's not explicit.

S1 is still my overall favorite but G is pretty close solely because of the Miku stuff and Dr Ver hamming it up.

Character relationship ties in GX were weak as hell, with Maria being the worst, because she only really talks with Tsubasa throughout the whole season.

What do you even want? They sorted out most of their issues by the end of G. Either some contrived situation comes up that brings on forced "drama", or there's just long stretches of the show that focusses on them being happy and not having problems,and both of these sound boring as hell.

GX has plenty of problems, but "characters kick too little ass" isn't really one of them.

This. There've been 6 gears for two seasons and they still don't feel like a group with interlocking personal dynamics.

I would love if they actually spent time developing the current characters instead of adding more permanent ones, but I know they won't be able to refrain completely.

With regards to the former, the issues in G were already contrived as hell, and the issues in GX were summoned entirely out of thin air and no prior instigation. For the latter, you have shit taste and don't belong on this board if you can't enjoy girlfriends dating each other in an anime. Hibiki and Miku are the strongest relationship in the show, so it would be wise to focus on them.

That's fair enough, I guess I just don't care enough about the characters then? I was able to tolerate G enough to get through it, but at least for me GX is over the limit I can put up with. Hopefully S4 and 5 will be good enough for me to justify going back and getting through it (it's so frustrating to see something like this happen to a show you like).

I don't have an issue with people having a relationship. And it's fine if there's is just quiet and happy... UNTIL you start to make that a series focus. I shouldn't need to tell you why it's not a good idea to focus a STORY on a dynamic in which NOTHING INTERESTING IS HAPPENING. In S1, it was great, because there was CONFLICT, i.e NARRATIVE. what would it be in S4? "I love you!" "I love you, too!" That's fine, no problem with it, as long as it isn't the focal point. Narratives are fundamentally about conflict of some kind, if the central "plot" is as plotless as possible, it'll essentially be a slice of life show where nothing ever happens. And those have their place, I just wouldn't think a fan of fucking Symphogear would want to turn it into one.

However, most people who post here tacitly agree with me. There's a very good reason S1 is considered the best, and a lot of it has to do with Biki and Miku's dynamic i.e conflict. If Hibi had immediately told Miku about being a gear and Miku immediately accepted "cuz they just luv eachother soooo much :3" no one would have cared, because it wouldn't have mattered. They had problems, and their relationship was nice, so it was enjoyable to watch them deal with conflict. Now, they'd either have some contrived problem introduced only to be solved by a contrived solution (S3), or literally nothing.


Again, I have no problem with them being in a happy relationship, it just can't be the core of the show the way it was in S1.

Fix Hibiki. Nanoha going the backseat instructor route who lost 8% of her power every time she did what people liked her for was a mistake that ate away at the series, and Symphogear is going the same route. Turning her into another normal pendant user with no unique qualities and a reduced central role was a bad idea that needs to be reversed.

Anyways. So I think what >>2104539 is saying is don't let the series be fluff. There can be a bit of fluff but too much and it gets tiring. I agree. One definition of plot is simply problem/resolution.

Here's a random example:

My example is a romance/adventure type plot but there's not really any relationship drama

Suprise new enemy! Fights happen all over! More rocket surfing in elevator shafts!
Also, Miku and Hibiki sometimes kiss in the winddown episodes. More action! Oh my god, the villain has a secret base on Venus and is charging a giant laser! Mikuhibikihug before the final battle and the gang defeats all robot masters and heads for wily's castle! Yanderemiku showing up to turn the tide when the villains are about to win!

You can easily have both, without the relationship being the focus. Like you would in every other show ever.

James Bond sure keeps having romances, but you wouldn't be crying that it's ~the focus~, so why do so here?
