I think those on Rise are more canon compliant and short ones so not connected to Camera Loves You. As /u/ as the first reboot game is, I can't force myself to play it again. It hates you for playing it and not in a cool or interesting way. It's like, "you want a fun adventure, exploring places and shooting monsters? Fuck you, here's exaggerated torture porn and it's all YOUR fault." And pulling away the happy ending of the last game in the sequel is just a kick in the teeth. This ship is the only good thing to come of it, and I try to divorce it as much as possible from the actual games. Drop Sam and Lara's look into the old games in your mind and you'll probably be the happier for it.

From a /u/ perspective, it's pretty dumb that the first game teases Lara/Sam rather blatantly and then she's not even mentioned in the second one. The comics that came out between them revealed that some of Himiko's soul had transferred into Sam after all and she was suffering from blackouts and psychotic fits, so she ended up commited to a mental ward and told Lara she didn't want to have anything more to do with her.

So that came off as "write the potential gay stuff out of the story" using the old "being gay is a mental disorder" shtick, crazy Himoko soul nonsense or not. I remember Prachett (The main writer) tried to give some half-assed excuse about Sam's absence but it was like, you're the writer, you could have just as easily said the process failed and Sam was fine, we didn't know shit about it either way til you made a stand on it.

All that aside, the second game is basically Tomb Raider: Daddy Issues. I enjoyed the gameplay just as much, and I like new Lara, was glad they included actual tombs this time (aside from that one where you have to guide a boat around with rope and wishes and get insta-killed if you fail, fuck that place) but the story structure was almost an exact copy of the previous game (Lara goes hunting for some mystical bullshit, kills lots of crazy dudes with guns, finds out mystical bullshit is real, kills lots of undead dudes with spears, destroys mystical thing to undo all the nonsense, heads off in search of new mystical bullshit).

Really it seems like new Lara isn't sexual at all, which is for me the biggest change from her previous incarnation. There were hints of it with Sam but Jonah isn't even friend-zoned, he's just a concerned friend. Lara doesn't seem like she gives a shit about relationships whatsoever, she just wants to go find shit and kill people. Maybe what happened with Sam made her decide they weren't worth it.

Try to play Underworld on the 360 for shits and giggles and game becomes unresponsive as soon as the screen fades to black. Can still just return to dashboard by opening the tray as the guide button failed to work. Some of the dlc was missing despite being downloaded too.

Going to see if deleting everything and reinstalling it works. Luckily I don't have to pay for the dlc again. I'd probably snap the disc in half otherwise.

That's the part that's really telling. Even IF you buy the whole "we can't afford Arden Cho" excuse, there's literally no financial loss in WRITING Lara/other characters talking about Sam. Frankly it hurts any positive recognition they may have accrued from the reboot, since it's an such an obvious omission it veers right into horrible characterization. Someone on the project didn't want Sam in the rest of the games, and pretty much the only reason to try and completely erase her existence is because they didn't like her relationship with Lara. In other words, "NO HOMO."

Yuri/femslash has never had great traction or a large share of Final Fantasy's fan base, but for whatever reason, after the initial prerelease excitement about FF finally having a canon yuri couple, once the game finally came out everyone jumped straight to Neopoliton or Flight. Western yuri/femslash fans just don't seem to like genki girls much. I don't know what the Japanese reception was like of course, but I was in the Western one from day one until I played the game out a couple of months later and since then Fang/Vanille seems to have only lost traction.

It was actually from that fandom where I first encountered that specific type of homophobia - pre-teen/barely teenage girls who squealed over Cloud and Sephiroth fucking but then recoiled at the mere mention of Tifa/Aerith cuz lezzies are gross.

But boy has this gone off topic. Anyways. Lara/Sam could have given the TR reboot series a chance at a seat at the "truly innovative games" table. Because really, it's a good game and a solid reboot, but not entirely notable for anything else.

Man, S-E still has final say of what they want in a franchise that belongs to them, so fuck S-E the same if not even more than Crystal Dynamics.

We also associate that sort of tone/syrupy affectation very differently. Don't wanna get too off topic here but one of the other criticisms about XIII and the Lightning Trilogy overall was the gameplay but I personally found it more engaging rewarding reactive gameplay rather than just having Terra Branford spam ultima for 1 mp in trance form killing bonus bosses twenty levels above her in two turns due to multicast.

More on topic did anyone else find Lara's alternative outfits in the first game underwhelming? I mean one of them was just Lara's default outfit covered in mud. I get The Predator reference but still.

I only liked that commando outfit and the archer outfit mainly cause I wince whenever a combat heavy outfit doesn't have some kind of hand protection and those two did.

Also as much as I love both pairings they are night and day. Chloe's a emotional mess cause everyone abandoned her and Max has some issues with being too meek at points.

Lara is forced to lose her meekness and once that happens she becomes ruthless in her goal to save Sam.

Wow while checking out the Tomb Raider wiki for... research, I decided to check out the comments.

The dudebro backlash is insane. You got everything from "I'm not a homophob but..." to your deniers that the Sam x Lara fandom even exists. I'd hate to see the official forums.

The thing that kills me is that one of the upgrade trees has finishers for all weapons that Lara carries around.
Which I think is purely cosmetic, because I think you can do a killing move on any enemy regardless, it just wouldn't be with that weapon.

So really all that Lara learns here is more inventive ways to kill people.
I mean it might be good that she's on her own because I can't imagine the conversations.

that sounds oddly specific. is that a thing? can they somehow cry female tears as well?

Maybe, but I'm pretty sure that you can do a dodge kill even without the upgrade, you just default on your trusty pickaxe.

My favorite is the visceral kills when Lara pulls some poor asshole under water and crocodile rolls him before ending him.
In a messed up way, kinda sexual. Too bad there are no female henchmen... yeah.

So after watching a Let's Play of Rise I can say it was a rehash of the first game but worse.

The gameplay looked great but I had no emotional attachment to the characters. And they severely underused the characters I could have had an emotional attachment to.

I really couldn't care less about Lara's father they should have had Lara's companions Reyes and Jonah and even Kaz for that Trinity connection(and to further add to our /u/ needs) act as a replacement for Zip and Alister from the Legends continuity.

I finished it today.
Plays almost exactly like the first one.
But it lacks atmosphere and as Yahzee said, the plot just cribs a lot from "The Last Crusade".

What's more annoying is that the villains are the only interesting characters. Konstantin is kind of tragic in his delusions and Ana does a very interesting tightrope between treachery and genuine maternal feelings for Lara.

Jacob and his barely characterized daughter however, ughhh.
Especially when you go back and consider what the prophet's story amounts to.

Hell, even the fucking Solari just wanted off the goddamn island and yet they were evil cult.
I know this is basically not /u/ but I have to vent this shit here.

Have you read any of the comics? They're not much better. "Oh look a magical thingy that grants immortality and Trinity's after it!"

The most interesting moments typically involved Lara realizing other people's lives matter and going to save them like Kaz and Sam(finally but we all know they're going to fuck that up.)

Further I get that they're trying to go for some world building/continuity stuff but they seem to be ignoring character development and the first game. Or just undoing all of it.

On top of that Rise seemed to lack the grandeur that the 2013 game and Legends continuity had. Rise seemed focused almost entirely on set pieces.

The 2013 game had some problems conveying a sense of grandeur and awe but it managed to sneak a few in there.

Here's to hoping they do something smart with Sam and get better at conveying a proper story that diet outright ignore established lore.
