anon you responded to here. I never had anything against fanfiction, just never felt a need to take a look before. I didn't even ship before RWBY so I'm new to this whole aspect of fandoms.

I think fanfiction is pretty cool and that authors should feel less intimidated by fanfics of their works. If my writing inspired a group of people so much they felt compelled to write themselves, then I would feel pretty badass.

Problem is that some folks just don't care that much about their writing. They push something out without even a token revision process and the writing is barely readable. The content can be fine, but doesn't mean much when I can't actually understand the content.

Fanfiction is also much harder to write than most would assume imho. Yes, designing an original plot, setting; and characters can be challenging, but it's much easier to be consistent. It's your ideas, so as long as you keep your ideas in order it is relatively easier to create a unified work that comes together nicely.

Fanfiction requires that you are using ideas from someone else. Not only is it basically impossible to keep everyone in character, but what is "in character" is going to depend on the fan so you are never going to please everyone.

There's also the fact that when people think fanfic the first thing that comes to mind is terribly written ikea style porn fics by people that aren't remotely interested or payed attention to the actual show's plot (like the much hated high school AU fic. What's the fucking point). But also tend to be fics shipping characters that not only aren't remotely implied to be into each other, but half the time haven't even met or interacted in show at all usually because the shipper thinks they look cute together.

Yang is the opposite of mature. She's childish. That's why she's always screwing around and half-assing things and why her solution to things not working is to get angry and run headlong into things swinging harder.

It could (and likely will) go in that direction, sure. But it's a really bland and in my opinion, initially forced, choice. Also, Weiss *is* pretty awkward with any other people. I don't see how Monochrome is anything close of a natural pairing. Yes, it's clearly not shoehorned, but it's for that very reason that it doesn't make any sense. You could say there's an appeal to the love-hate part of it, but Blake and Weiss don't really talk that much either. More than Blake and Yang, but they still don't get along at all.
Also, guess what anon, yes, the go-to canon pairing is generally shoehorned, because it makes sense that it's going to be this one. Just like most people expect Chitoge to be the endgame in Nisekoi, and just like despite the harem, Naru was still the endgame in Love Hina. I don't see how the prospect of canon Bumblebee is unfortunate.

No idea what you're talking about. They have literally zero problem with each other post Black and White, they get along quite well actually. From what we've seen so far, Blake is absolutely the person Weiss is closest to on the team. She only talks to yang one on one that single time in V1, and throughout V3 her dialogue with Ruby is still fairly annoyed most of the time, though no longer genuinely hostile like it was in early V1.

It's unfortunate because following shitty tropes is not a good reason for something to happen. It's unfortunate that, rather than pursue the higher quality, more natural route, they'll go the shoehorned generic path because "it's expected" and there is demand for it.

just because you don't like a ship doesn't make your opinion suddenly fact. Besides, Weiss still hasn't finished maturing yet. She still has unresolved issues of racism. The only progress she has made is that she is no longer openly disgusted at faunus she personally knows. Though I fully expect Volume 4 to be when she resolves this particular flaw and she did make a lot of progress in Volume 3. Nonetheless, Blake and Weiss still have an underlying conflict between them. They just agreed to set it aside since they are teammates. Volume 4, I expect will set them up to resolve their differences for good, but it might be something they do in their own, separate story arcs. Then resolve for good once they reunite.

Volume 3 changes a lot about the relationship between Blake and Yang. Blake comparing Yang to Adam. Yang's near breakdown at Blake's distrust. The sacrificial act by Yang for Blake and Blake's reaction to the aftermath of that sacrifice. These moments are not just shippy either. These are plot relevant, high impact scenes. Blake worrying about Yang showing signs of an early Adam has big implications for the direction of the story. Raven's apparent connection to Adam and the White Fang and Yang being the only main character to meet Adam face to face besides Blake is also a pretty big deal. You can't dismiss all their scenes together and then claim the story is forced.

Blake and Yang have some of the most emotionally intensive scenes of the series proper, starting in Volume 2. Only Pyrrha and Jaune's scenes matches or surpasses their scenes. What they lack in volume they make up in intensity and impact. Yang is the only character that successfully pushes Blake out of her depressive state. Weiss and Blake don't have anything to really match. Coffee and tea just doesn't hold any weight to Yang having a near breakdown at Blake's hesitant response.

And Weiss isn't prefect mate. She doesn't understand what it means to be poor or oppressed at all. She has yet to openly accept that the faunus have been wronged by her family and their company. Though once again, Volume 4 will certainly change that. She said without any irony that she is the victim because second class citizens took issue with her family when she likely already knew her father wasn't completely innocent. This is also ignoring her tendency to overreact prior to Volume 3. She treated people like dirt and was a self-entitled brat for almost the entire first volume. Yang meanwhile only took issue with Blake in their first scene together because Blake was acting a bit rude. Then when they meet again in the forest they act as if they never had any issue in the first place. Hardly immature by any standard.

Yes, RT are pretty obvious when it comes to their foreshadowing, and no, subtlety isn't a bad thing. But when they have set a low standard of subtlety, they sure aren't suddenly going to subvert it because anon likes Monochrome better. It doesn't make the show any worse either way.
A pairing actually comes out of nowhere or of overly tight goggles is actually the instance of bad writing; it's called Strangled by the Red String and it's generally not something that sits well with the fans.

Also just because you don't like the pairing doesn't mean you have your say over what's okay in canon and what's not; that's lowkey trying to start a ship war here.

Again, there's really nothing to suggest this. We've seen absolutely no conflict between the two of them since V1. I don't know why you'd make this assumption with no evidence at all. There is less conflict remaining between them than there is between Weiss and Ruby.

Sure, I agree. But we also saw just as plot relevant, high impact scenes between Blake and Weiss in V1. This was kinda my point about forced vs natural. Weiss already had these natural connections to Blake. Kinda my whole point. I agree that BB will end up being the canon ship, as I pointed out here >>2082086 but It's my opinion that this is precisely because RT's writing isn't very good. I don't trust in their abilities enough that they'll realize they already created an interesting and natural dynamic between two characters, and so it is likely that they will continue to push this BB angle with purely chance interactions like the whole Adam scene (which again just happened to be Yang at the moment, Blake would have likely freaked out over anyone from RWBY showing up at that moment, and Adam would have attacked any of the three of them).

For instance, Yang will probably be the one to run into Blake first. She will probably just be traveling and training or whatever, and happen to run randomly into Blake somewhere leading to a confrontation between them and further developing their relationship. A better and less "They happened to meet, teehee." route would have been Blake deciding to stop running and working on stopping down the White Fang's operations, which would have pretty naturally led her to the chance to run into Weiss, since the Schnees and their factories/mines/everything are generally very bright red targets for the White Fang.

That is the sort of natural connection leading to natural development that I do not expect from RT's writing.

I feel like Yang developed maturity she'd never normally have because she had to mother Ruby, and it conflicts with her base personality, which is quite frankly, a childish brutish kind of jerk hidden with a layer of friendlyness and snark. She's basically a few bad days away from being Mercury.

As a result she beats up a bar for kicks and gets amusement at how much stronger she is and how they're afraid of her one minute, and goes into mother hen mode the next.

It's why her first instinct when Mercury apparantly cheap shotted her was to maim and mock him and expect to get away with it because he broke the rules instead of just dodging or tanking the hit and letting the authorities deal with him.

She even says she's only a Huntress because it's the fasted route to being strong and going out into the world without having to be a criminal.

If Summer never died or Raven never left she'd probably be a very dark character.

Besides, I'm fairly certain that the Yangst that comes along with her arm getting cut off will make her somewhat question her ways and become less of what you depict her. At least she'll learn to be a little more level-headed, perhaps.

Because Monty focused on rule of cool over story. V4 is almost guaranteed to be a clusterfuck that will struggle to progress any one character's plot, since they now have AT LEAST 4 different stories to tell (one for each girl, and this isn't even counting side stuff like Qrow or the villians), which is really not helped by the lack of total screentime that has been a problem since day 1.

Barbs likes the bees and likes having fun with fans. Arryn is the same, but is even more committed to the idea of it actually happening in the show. She warned fans not to get their hopes up and she herself seemed disappointed when she said that Blake might just be straight.

Hell, half the reason I think bees would be a huge plus for the story of RWBY is because of these two and their investment into their characters' interactions. Their best voice acting is pretty much all of the Blake and Yang scenes. Scenes that are already some of the best of the show in general (excluding fights).

Well, considering the fight scenes were dragged down by the use of Face Poser and MMD models, yeah, the bees scenes were effectively the best.
I'm really hoping that Maya and what we've seen in the leaked trailer mean the fights are going to get a fluidity bump.

It was pretty cringe honestly. The story was nice, but the whole pushing and hugging afterwards was just badly written to the point of being painful and pretty mediocre voice acting. Certainly not on par with say, the Tukson scene, the Ironwood scene in Brawl in the Family, Qrow hanging out with Ruby and Yang, Jaune and Neptune's talk at the dance, Roman's final speech. Just so many scenes.

I get that quality is subjective, but at a certain point you leave the realm of "I thought this was one of the best scenes" and enter the realm of "this scene was the biggest scene in the series for my ship so I like it the most". It didn't have much character development for either character. Yang's depression after Fall and her directionlessness at the campsite in V2 were much bigger development scenes for her than "I'm looking for my mom and I used to be obsessed with her"--Blake didn't really develop at all in the candle scene beyond stopping her obsessive search, her scenes with Sun and Weiss in V1 were much more important for her character.

what makes their scenes together works is that they all build up to the climax of volume three.

Their initial interactions are light, but carry the implication that the two are fast friends regardless of how their first meeting went. So we get the sense the two are close already and they are going to get closer after volume 1.

Volume 2 introduces their backstory connection. Blake learns about Raven who very likely has a connection to the White Fang or at the very least Adam. Yang, though she doesn't realize it yet, is introduced to Adam when she spotted Blake drawing him in her book. Episode 6 also creates a personal connection between the two since it demonstrates that Yang has a strong understanding of where Blake was at the time. That Blake is now privy to something Yang has likely shared with no one else aside from Qrow. Hell, even Ruby doesn't hint at any awareness of that story in show and maybe she doesn't remember due to how young she was at the time.

then volume 3 has Blake comparing Yang directly to Adam. Further cementing their plot connection. Yang getting very emotional at Blake's distrust further demonstrating the level of personal connection between the two.

Then the Adam scene happens which is the second most impactful scene in the series thus far (Pyrrha's death scene is clearly the most important). We are finally introduced to a major villain that drastically alters the tone of the show (though once again a certain death scene does this more so). Yang and Blake are dramatically changed by the scene's outcome as well as other main characters by extension.

No one is talking about the implications of Roman's speech, they are discussing if Yang is gonna punch Blake when they have their reunion. Qrow's reunion didn't leave as a lasting impact as Yang refusing to tell Ruby she loves her back, which is implied to partly be because of Blake running away. The implication coming from Yang only getting really upset and angry when she talks about Blake running away. Being so upset she loses sight of her love for her baby sister, a baby sister she was basically a mother to.

Their scenes are linked in a way that really only the Pyrrha-Jaune plotline is linked. "Burning the Candles" is important since it puts Blake's actions in the finale into context. Blake agreed to put dealing with the WF in a lower priority and the very person who made her promise to do so gets punished for her inaction. This being one of the several reasons she likely ran away.

And that's just part of the reasons why I consider their scenes together to be some of the best. I will fully admit this is just my opinion, though I contend it is a well supported opinion. An opinion I feel confident many others share after volume 3's ending. I'm not arguing they are the absolute best. I'd give that to the Pyrrha-Jaune storyline, but other than that and a few oneshot moments (mostly fight scenes), the bees come out on top imho.

Honestly that should be a given. We are comparing scenes of the show to other scenes in the same show. If we are going to talk about how an indie studio staffed by amateur writers and actors is going to produce less than stellar work then we should go to /trash/

And RWBY's bad writing is overplayed. What makes it a good show is that the creators, though lacking training, experience, tools, and money still put all they can into their work. Anime studios with production budgets larger than RT's total budget have been less ambitious than Roosterteeth has been with RWBY. It's the only reason I can tolerate the somewhat flat writing at times because I really enjoy how far they try to push themselves with their limited means. The increasing episode times being an example for something few webseries dare try to do. Let alone do it without requiring their audiences to pay for it. And most of the VAs try harder and harder with each volume and it shows.

It's much better than watching the same shit, no risk anime over and over again. Not to say all anime is like that or that RWBY is better than most anime. But it's cool to see such a small studio try harder than many big Western/Eastern studios
