I use the word "interpretation" for a lack of better term, but this write up is highly regarded within the community as the go to explanation of lore and what's happening. Most of the things are sourced with in-game description and information and the author notes when they are giving their own take on things.

Doesn't matter though, the point was to illustrate the lore is quite rich if it allows for these kind of lenghty elaborations.

I thought Gherman was basically sacrificing his life, and spending an eternity in a hell for the Hunter. When he's dreaming, he's screaming out for Laurence and Whilliam to help him, and he's begging for someone to release him. He could easily trick the player, into becoming like him, and free himself, but he instead continues on, putting the players interests before his own. His boss battle is him basically refusing a mercy kill, and trying to free the hunter from the nightmare, before they become like him.

Really reminds me of Gywn from Dark Soul. A selfless character, that is probaly the most tragic thing in the game.

On the topic of Yuri, Bloodborne is by far the most Yuriish of the games. You can propose to a female character (Who will turn you down regardless of gender, but will be very gentle), have some flirty interactions with a hooker, have a nun become Yandare obsessed with you, and strike a relationship with a doctor (That ends in tragedy)

Gherman made a deal with a Great One to become a host for a dream through which Hunters come and go continuously when need be. Presumbly the reason he even made this deal was because he wanted Maria and his workshop back. I never got the impression he was staying in the dream out of the sense of duty, like you said, he cries in his sleep begging for someone to help him. When he is awake he seems very fed up with his existence too. So to me the Old man is hosting the dream because he doesn't think he has any other choice, not out of sense for duty.
Though I might be a bit biased since I disliked his character from the beginning due to his dismissive attitude towards the Doll and later when it was revealed he was a weird creep towards Maria.
Admiteddly him offering you the release from dream seems noble, but again, that might be because of the pact he has with a Great One.

Funny how interpretations of characters go differently for different people. To me Gwyn was always power hungry homicidal maniac who then kept manipulating humanity so his reigns don't end when they should.
If I were to pick a selfless character that is most tragic thing in the game I'd say The Fair Lady. Or Artorias. Rhea is pretty tragic too.

There's also Doll who says she loves you and cries of happiness when you give her presents. It's the most adorable thing.

The thing I love about Soulsborne, is not the gender neutral attitude everyone has. (Like in Dark Souls, when the cleric taunts you for killing Rhea, and him implying that you were in love with her even if you are a female), its how bloody three dimensional all the characters are.

Best example is Smough and Gywndalion. Cannibal whose the biggest Jerk around. Is the last knight at his post, refuses to abandon his liege lord, and dies defending him in a glorious last stand against Aldritchs army. Gywndalion. Manipulating everyone, and sacrificing countless undead to feed the fire. Sacrifices his own life to save his little sister, before being devoured by Aldritch.

I can think of 2 instances where things get gendered in DS3. One is obviously Anri. The second one is when Leonhart kills Rosaria, when you invade him to get her soul back, if you are a Female he says "felt sorry for the poor thing?" and if you are a guy he will say "couldn't resist her any longer?" or something to this effect.
Other than that, yeah, Irina thinks you are her champion saint and says she is yours, Yuria says she is yours too. Sirris wants to be your knight. Obviously the Firekeeper will do whatever you want too. There's enough cute girls to make a harem.

I don't remember reading any lore on Smough in this game. This guy is still pure evil though. I actually thought he was imlied to be Aldritch himself due to them both being described as eating people and being fatasses.
As for Gwyn, again, sacrificing oneself for what one believes in doesn't yet make a hero. At least in MY books.
But yeah I do agree how nothing is really black and white in these games except Pontiff and Aldritch. Fuck these guys.

Dark Souls II is on sale. I'll be playing blind on my first playthrough, so the burning question is: How do I maximize my lesbianism?

It was a popular theory thanks to some well knows Youtubers, but as far as I remember nothing in canon suggests Priscilla's connection to Gwynevere. Only the fact that she is a Dragon/Human crossbreed would at the time of DS1 connect her vaguely to the only dragon allied to humans (Seath). But then as DS2 proves it doesn't even mean she was born naturally as I'm pretty sure Shanalotte was also a hybrid and was implied to be created artificially.
Maybe if the DLCs touch upon Yorshka some more we'll get some answers. And I hope they do because it's the last chance to get any answers.

It recently struck me how I find our dear level-up waifu in DS3 a lot more similar to The Emerald Herald compared to the various firekeepers in the first game. Similar postures and moving around in different poses, somewhat similar outfits at least compared to the Dark Souls 1 firekeeper, and so on.

I'm afraid you might be disappointed anon, these games don't really do romance of any gender-combination, nor even enough character interactions for real shipping. However they typically have a character at the hub-area (Dark Souls 1 excepted) which is a cute girl with questionably suggestive phrasing who you go to for leveling up and various other things. Beyond that, cute fanart like in this thread is resulting purely from people's natural inclination to ship hard and occasionally single lines or interactions with other fairly minor NPCs.

I hate to break it to you but there is no gay in Dark Souls/Bloodborne it's just that Lady Maria is a total bifauxen and we love her for it.

The only things even close to gay in Dar Souls is some neutral dialogue in Dark Souls one indicating your character might have feelings for a priestess.

I don't know if this has been data mined and it's hard to tell from looking, but from the look of it, while the doll has a smooth, featureless groin, it does have a texture that - while abstract - doesn't clash in style with the rest of the game, suggesting the doll has stylized "genitals" painted on. Despite the whole light/dark theme, not really sure if it's meaningful discussing Souls in terms of good and evil. To me it seems more like a spectrum of how convinced people are that the world may or may not be utterly screwed, and in turn how desperate, cynical, or just plain resigned they act from that conviction.

Of course, there's also that since the player character is human, things are inevitably portrayed as everything beneficial to humanity being "good" and everything destructive being "evil"... which is obviously not the case when you look back. For example, the Witch of Izalith and the girls are considered heroes for securing the world for human habitation, but they did so by practically roasting the entire world, very nearly obliterating the whole past ecosystem.
