The more this goes on the more I root for Based Sayaka. Consider the following

Looks: there is pretty much zero debate here, Sayaka makes Yuu look like a sow in comparison. We the audience only see them as simple drawings and have our own preferences, but within the context of the story, the "in universe" characters, Yuu included, view Sayaka and Touko as the prettiest pair in the school and a fitting match.

Academics: we saw the rankings on display, Sayaka is Touko's equal at the top of the board. Not much more to say.

Personality: smarter than most of the cast and far more cunning than the majority of the characters in her position from other romance series. Yet not to the point of overbearing. Every time she has "confronted" someone, she's done so with good reason, acted within acceptable social boundaries, and left her would be adversaries sufficient opportunity and time to explain or find out about things themselves.

Relationship to Touko: she's known the real Touko and willingly supported her since HS. The only reason she's not in Yuu's current position is that she didn't turn down some would be suitor in front of Touko, which was in itself an nonsensical, though interesting, way for Touko to fall for someone.

Sayaka is everything Touko should want and her current predicament was the result of her being a victim of coincidental circumstances. Once Touko gets over her selfish teenage delusions and stops chasing the "bad boy" in Yuu, she'll hopefully see the one for was right beside her all along

But I'm a bit concerned about where the series is heading. Right now there are only two future plot hooks outside of what's directly between Yuu and Touko - Sayaka and the play. It's entirely possibly they get tackled or maybe even resolved together. Then what?

They can't keep doing this dance between Yuu and Touko, and I would like to think that Nakatani wouldn't either.m given her doujin track record. But since it's a published work this time, with influences and decision making that aren't just her own, who knows how they'll handle this.

There are quite a few plot points that might unfold, actually. For starters, I think that she'll give some focus to the side characters too.
For example, who knows what role the gay teacher and her gf will play in this story. There's also Akari and her crush on the basketball club guy(I think Nakatani mentioned that she'll give some focus to her), and I'm ready to bet that the girl who confessed to Nanami will show up too. And what's the deal with Doujima? We know absolutely nothing about him yet either.

There's also Nanami herself, her family and her mental problems too, which I'm afraid it won't be solved that easily.

Admittedly, Sayaka is benefiting somewhat from being a side character that hasn't received a lot of focus. So there are less reasons to dislike her properly.

I also just think she's doing her role so well so far. Most of the times, you know the friend character is going to fuck it up somehow, giving the MC (or in this case, Touko) some very good reasons to reject her. But Sayaka is playing this game so patiently and well, you get the feeling that maybe, just maybe she'll pull it off somehow. Or at the very least, she will formulate and execute a situation that basically will make Touko look like the bad guy for rejecting her.

But she doesn't have that attitude. You just assume she does because you think all characters in Sayaka's position would turn out that way, so it's entirely your fault. My advice for reading Nakatani's work: do not fall into automatic assumption because her characters are never stereotypical.

Before Yuu appeared in their life, Sayaka has some kind of feelings for Touko. But she didn't have the gut to dive into it without knowing her chances. When she found out Touko received love confessions from girls, she took that chance to find out Touko's sexual orientation, and was content with the answer that Touko might not be gay.

Touko is a different person than Sayaka. When she took interest in Yuu, she dived head first into asking the girl out, surprise kiss, and steady sexual advances. Sayaka didn't know any of this. All she knew is that Touko is getting attached way too fast to a new girl, and that both gives herhope and distress. Hope because she realizes Touko might be gay and she might have a chance, distress because she now has an actual rival.

It's completely fair to feel negative emotions about one's romantic rival. That's what made Sayaka real, instead of true "plastic" personality characters who smile and befriend everybody without any sense of realism. But what made Sayaka great, is that she has yet to act unreasonable in any situation. She's strict, yet had always been fair to Yuu, and actually helped the girl to know Touko better and making the right decisions, all the while still not giving up her own fight for Touko. And that's freaking admirable.

The only reason anyone can hate Sayaka is because they didn't want to sympathize with someone who is obviously going to lose. It's easier to brush her off as a villian, than feeling sad that a decent person has to be left out.

She has never openly admitted anything about Touko, however there are two scenes in chapter 5.5 that more or less outright states she's in love.

One is when she asked if Touko is turning the love letter person down because that person was a girl. I think most people saw that as Sayaka trying to indirectly see if she has a chance or not.

The other scene is picture related and actually happened before the revelation that the letter was from a girl. Here Sayaka was assuming the letter was from a boy and oh my goodness did she look indignant and upset that a BOY could make Touko this nervous.
