I like how Tomoko is actually interacting with people more and more, but the key players in that are still girls like Nemo or Yoshida, then her brother a distand second.

I remember reading the first few chapters a long time ago and thinking how pessimistic and self-deprecating this was, but I understand that Tomoko is pretty relatable to a lot of anons.

I've mostly been following developments via these threads, so it seems like Tomoko is slowly improving? If I remember in the beginning she couldn't even speak in public.

she is, but it is kept very realistically, without any of the typical tv clichees. In that, it is done VERY slowly. It isn't happening over night after one wacky hijinks, there is no "moral" she is learning week after week. And she isn't becoming a whole other person, she is still herself. Same with the people she interacts now, it's not like she suddenly has some friends now and everything is sunshine, no, some are more friendly, others less, some are like her, others less.
Whether it was the authors intention or not, its amazing how subtle they made it. At some point you just notice she is able to do X or Y even though she couldn't do it before, then you notice how gradually she evolved.

But be warned, while the cringe on her has become less, it has spread to side characters.

I think it's worse than that. There are many instances of behaviors that Tomoko exhibits that are there to showcase what a weirdo she is. It might be that her lesbianism is also being treated the same way. "She's so desperate for affection and so corrupted by exposure to otaku media that she's even seeing her female friends in that way".

If the manga ends in a redemption arc for her it could be that one of the things that happens is that learns how to be "normal" in that aspect too.

I really hope that doesn't happen, though. Especially since the author seems to be aware that lesbians actually exist and aren't just a phase, as the OP image shows.

This was how I read Tomoko's character. In addition to the social anxiety and delusions of grandeur, her blatant homolust that she refuses to address colors a lot of her interactions with other people. It felt really telling to me that at the Athletic Meet she recoiled from the boys afterwards--it's partly because she's never had that much male interaction obviously, but the way it was linked with boy->panic->immediately go watch girls, plus the fact she never actually obsesses or really thinks about the experience afterward(which, considering how she consistently misconstrues her girl classmate's actions as advances one would expect her to do). The whole series, she's never displayed even a single hint of liking boys except on some theoretic or fictional level.

It feels really genuine to me that she's just gay but internally writes it off as part of her 'deviance' and not really confronting her feelings. It comes off more realistic than most lesbian works, actually. Of course, I'm probably inserting myself into it a bit--I did much the same thing with thinking my gay attraction was just an aspect of me being weird in high school and kept thinking I'd fine "the perfect guy" sometime.

Also, I'd go even step further than anyone else here and say Tomoko could legitimately be not even bisex but full on lesbian. She's never really shown much of an interest in guys besides weird fascination with dicks and even that hasn't been a thing for quite a while now. Whereas she regularly and openly creeps on girls, inappropriately touches Yuu-chan, spent an hour staring at cheerleaders just to see glimpse of their panties that one time, got distracted by pole dancing women etc.

Not to mention there isn't a single established male character in the entire series besides her brother. Whereas her sort of romance with Yuu-chan is well documented and even delinquent-chan could potentially end up being more than just friends.

I think we can safely conclude at this point that with prolonged exposure, Spaghettitis is contagious. Normally, the condition's symptoms naturally prevent this from happening, but thanks to the class trip both Emoji and Yoshida wound up spending extended periods of time with Tomoko in an enclosed space, and the inevitable occurred.

Emoji has lived a normal and highly social life, so her immune system was completely unprepared for the onslaught, and was quickly overwhelmed--already we see symptoms of late-stage infection. Yoshida is made of sterner stuff, and as such the outward symptomatic progression has been slower, but that too is only a matter of time.

where are you concluding this from? every chapter shows perfectly happy animu slice of life scenarios, then a stark contrast of the lead character who's failing miserably in the same environment. It's not about how anime isn't real, it's about how blocking out opportunities leads to self destruction and misery. That sets the stage for the humor. Recently with tomoko opening up, the roles have been reversed because everyone already created a persona for her due to their lack of interactions with someone they've seen around a lot. The newest characters are either swayed in opinion by others who're seeing tomoko through a filter, or through circumstances involving her. Her two newest friends are actually rather impartial to her quirks because they met her in a neutral setting (the trip [RIP emoji's healthy average life]).

On that note, I think I'm ready to start shipping Tomoko x Yuri as Yuri is the only character in the entire series who sees tomoko for who she is and understands/accepts it without ulterior motives.

I do agree with that anon in that the tone of the manga has changed. Most of the initial chapters were about Tomoko only, so when more focus is put on other characters, that is inevitable.

Also, senpai-what's-her-name seems pretty altruistic in her relationship. Though both she and Yuri know her very little, so either way it's not exactly a deep one. I'd say a ship with more canon content to work on would involve those who know how much of a bitch and a loser Tomoko actually is, like her loli cousin, Komi, possibly Yoshida and, god forbid, her brother.
