This thread is for discussing untranslated yuri manga/doujinshi/etc.

What have you read recently? What are you looking forward to? Any recommendations of series to pick up?

I don't know how much interest there is in a thread like this, but posting about untranslated series in the recent releases thread feels wrong and I'd like to avoid the general thread as much as possible.

Actual thread content:

Anyone else reading Ayakashiko? I enjoyed Riko to Haru quite a bit, so I have my hopes up. It's really cute, even if it hasn't had much in the way of yuri so far.

There are a couple of chapters online.

I've got a stack of various yuri doujinshi next to me on the desk. Scanning is hard work!

>>
>>2034485
There's a lot of yuri that people don't know about due to lack of exposure.
For example there's a 4koma in MTK that has three volumes I just found the other day about a normal girl surrounded by a bunch of non-humans including a girl who I think is supposed to be her main love interest who has tentacles
>>
>>2034488
Honestly, if you think you will still be into this stuff in a couple of years, it's really to your benefit to learn moon. Even fairly modest effort will have you reading manga in that amount of time.

>how does a Fukami Makoto-Takano Saku collab gets ignored?
They aren't as popular as you think. Makoto's only completely scanlated work is Young Gun Carnaval, even Chotto Kawai Iron Maiden's page on MU still lists it as ongoing and last chapter was scanlated a year ago. Same goes for Saku - only doujins and few chapters of non-/u/ series scanlated. Also, let's not forget Ange Verge cross Links.

But in the end, I think it all comes to the lack of yuri for yuri-related scanlation groups and lack of gun porn/gore/fanservice/whatever for every other group.

Probably they are worried it wouldn't sell as well as other title, maybe because it doesn't have anime so it would have less exposure compared to other title, maybe because of the LGBT brouhaha we experience lately, or maybe they simply doesn't have enough translator...

So, did you all learn Japanese?
I'm not sure if this is asked a lot, and I'm sure it varies, but I'm asking for personal experiences, how long did it take you, personally, to be able to read unstranslated stuff?
>>
>>2036389
I can't read the hard stuff yet but I've made a surprising amount of progress from studying in my free time (30min-1hour/day minimum) for a little over a year. Going from 0 reading ability to picking up on untranslated SFX, words and short phrases, then reading yotsuba-level manga and partially with a dictionary and google reading yuri raws is a great feeling.

It seems like an impossible task at first but if you really want it bad enough you will start studying because it is fulfilling. In a week you will be amazed at how much hiragana/katakana you memorized. In a month those grammar guides will help you read short sentences while studying basic kanji. I still struggle with remembering all the rules for more complicated grammar in longer sentences but I keep getting better and it feels great. I'm estimating I'll need two more years before I can translate for /u/ but either way I'll get there eventually.
>>
>>2036389
I studied off and on for a couple years without even trying to read native material. I was able to work through easier manga at that point and read Okujou no Yurirei-san not that much later (with heavy dictionary support). However, I definitely should have started reading much earlier and would not recommend other people wait so long to read.

Even after all this time (6+ years), I'd hardly call myself fluent, but I can read most things short of raiL-soft. I feel like a more dedicated person could have easily been fluent in that amount of time.

The JLPT estimated study times might be a good reference.

>>

>considering to learn moonspeak after i graduated, how difficult it is to memorize kanji and the likes?

My estimate is that you can fluently read most fiction after about 700-1000 hours of practice with a spaced repetition system like Anki or iknow.jp etc. Note that studying individual kanji is almost meaningless, you need to be studying them in the context of complete words. Highly recommend learning to write them (in correct stroke order) as well, it hugely improves retention because it forces you to understand the components a kanji is made of.
>>
>>2036500

okay, sounds reasonable
it's like learning english words, you need to know the proper context and its usage on full sentences
>>
>>2036594
>>2036567
Obviously you are still studying kanji since the point of the exercise is to learn to read, but the point I'm trying to make is that studying individual kanji in isolation is a wasted effort because the word context is absolutely crucial for understanding.

A few simple examples:

会社 vs 社会; the former is spelled "kaisha" and means "company/corporation" and the latter is spelled "shakai" and means "society".

行く vs 行う; the former is spelled "iku" and means "to go" and the latter is spelled "okonau" and means "to carry out".

百合; the first kanji 百 (hyaku) means "one hundred" and the second kanji 合 (au / gou) means "to suit / fit". 百合 is spelled "yuri" and means "lily". There is no consensus among Japanese etymologists about how this came to be.

Individual kanji do have meanings that are typically related to the meaning of the words they are part of, but not strongly enough that you can rely on it. That's why you have to learn the word context.

On the other hand, you will inevitably learn the individual kanji through the context-driven approach, and learning to write them in correct stroke order supplies your brain with much deeper patterns that are easier to memorize and help create associations that in turn aid you while reading.
>>
>>2036629

You learn individual Kanji to get an idea of HOW to learn them and learn the radicals by heart. If you skip that, you get most likely fucked, because you lack a rather important base.

It's honestly not so important to learn the exact meaning or whatever, although that's gonna help with some vocab later on. It's really more about the radicals and learning how to remember new Kanji. And that's best been done by learning to differentiate the 2250something "most common" Kanji.
If you skip this, you'll have to do the EXACT same in addition to vocab. I don't think that's such a great idea. Especially because that probably also means you won't be learning them in a good order. (Heisig and probably other good Kanji learning methods should order them in a good way for learning)

I mean it's a bit up to taste, but if you just jump to words immediately after Kana.. it's likely you'll just give up. It's too much new information at once.
>>
>>2036653
> If you skip that, you get most likely fucked, because you lack a rather important base.

I'd suggest the opposite; if you skip the context you get most likely fucked because you lack a rather important base.

Japanese children don't start by learning kanji and then learning Japanese words, the start by learning the words and later on how to write them. If you want to actually learn the language (so you could, say, read manga) as opposed to just wanking about how many kanji you've memorized, then the context-driven approach is essential.

I don't disagree with you, I just think what you outlined includes the majority of what you do when you learn individual kanji.

People get too worked up about learning kanji. You need to learn 10 times as many words as kanji. I don't think order or exact study methods matter that much as long as you stick to it.

>>
>>2042396
Google the title in Japanese and 百合 and look for yuri blog posts about it. Check if it's on the monthly yuri manga lists on futaba/2ch/etc. Check retailer (amazon) reviews for mention of yuri.
>>

I already do all of that but you won't believe how many titles are in those "monthly yuri manga lists" just because there is one panel in the whole volume in which two girls are interacting. It works like the yuri tag on sadpanda.

I don't understand how those blogs value the level of yuri. Pukuyuri has girls dating, kissing and having sex and has only 3.5/5, Watashi no tomodachi ga sekai ichi kawaii is subtext at best and has 3.4/5.

I urge you not to spend too much time doing only that. I did RTK and think it was useful, but it really does not get you that far into learning the language.

>>2042762
I was going to point out Pukuyuri as an example of the ratings being kind of crazy there too.

I haven't found a good one stop place for information on how much yuri is in stuff. Piecing together the information from those kind of blogs/2ch/samples/past experience, I'm not usually too surprised by how much yuri is in stuff.

By the way, the board below has been my main 2ch replacement since all the yuri threads I was following on 2ch got trolled to oblivion.
