When DC gives the series to new writers, they won't be needing their "perfect excuses" because new writers will be free to take the characters and show their own take on them (within reason).

Problem with Marvel is that they are trying too hard. DC has at least been a bit more subtle in their whole diversity schtick and their gay characters (like Midnighter for example) are entertaining enough.
Also Ivy/Harley's actually an old hat all things considered. The only thing that would compare on Marvel's side would be Carol/Jess and we know how that won't be a thing even in alternate universes.

At least DC had balls to create main lesbian character as Batwoman goes and make this Bombshells AU comic which got even more gay friendly characters.

Now compare that to Marvel comics and you see who is better for /u/. I find Marvel universe and cast of heroes/villains to be more exciting than DC and I would gladly buy an AU about gay Spiderwoman called Petra Parker or some new X-men girl who is gay from start who gets with random girls and female villains but we all know such comic for some reason will never happen, best thing we can hope from Marvel is random bi/poly stuff put there from time to time as quite side dish and even that mostly ends badly for /u/ side.

I don't think you understand how DC universe works.
Every single story that ever was is canon, they just take place in different universes (that sometimes intertwine). There is a main continuity that take focus at any given time but it doesn't make other continuities non-canon.
For example there woul be nothing stopping these Ivy and Harley from meeting the main AU ones, if the writers wanted.

And for some reason, in passing through /co/ I've occasionally read complaints about them. They wouldn't get any more specific beyond "it's shit" or "the quality dropped", and I can't quite tell what they're referring to.
I personally liked the arc, despite it being really exposition-heavy at times, but I feel like that's just a symptom of modern cape comics focused on mythology and "realm-politics". I thought it was a neat little love story with an unconventional heroine that was interesting and conflicted.

So am I missing something, or is this just a case of people being triggered by the gays?

Asgard's Assassin still maintains a level of plausible deniability, but that's chucked out the window pretty darn quickly as the story progresses into Queen of Hel.
1602 is a Battleworld AU that was pretty creative, funny and it had its dramatic moments.
That was also entirely gay.

The story more or less revolves around the relationship between the two main characters. Expect handholding, lots of hugs and lofty shakespearean dialogue about love.

It was terribly jarring at the time, and it was probably the worst case of a joke that fell flat in the entire run. Fortunately the un-fun only lasts for like, two panels though.

I think the comic's worst sin is that it tries a lot to seem wittier than it actually is, but I ultimately forgive its more pretentious aspects and I'd still have kept reading if the series wasn't soon to be cancelled.

I read them in the order listed. You can start off with Asgard's Assassin, and then you move on to Queen of Hel.
The 1602 comic is an AU that has little bearing on the plot, but I believe it "happened" in-between the two series. Read it if you want. I thought it was neat.

And while it's not completely necessary to follow the plot, this little tidbit of information from a wiki might help you out:
