Literally every Touhou doujin is written with a tenuous grasp of the characters at best. For a long time I think most Touhou doujin artists didn't even play the games, but did nothing but read existing doujin and base their own off of the fanon characterizations that emerged.

Well honestly a lot of romantic content (for Touhou at least) tends to be formulaic as hell.

I mean I get that people enjoy the steady rising tension of the will-they-won't-they is fun and all. But its been treaded over like hell.

It also bugs me how it tends to just wrapped up all nice and neat with a big bow in a single chunk of story. I like the slow stew way, way more.

Can probably chalk all this up to the typical doujinshi format unfortunately.

I wouldn't use doujinshi for reasons why I don't like them. There's plenty of terrible doujins on all sides.

Personally I think the two have a very good rivals/best friends relationship going on, and having them become a couple tarnishes that. It's better when they're co-protagonists at the center of it all, with all the potential relationships and eventual settling down (with whoever) revolving around them.

I would not call RemixPatch an unpopular ship. Maybe doesn't get as much outright romantic content as others but I still see a fair amount of material.

I also wouldn't describe any pairing as actually canon. I mean come on, I wear the goggles as tight as anyone else and I still think its silly to think there's going to be any actual stuff happening in official works.

Any vibes there might be on occasion can more than likely be written off as done purely on the artist's part, considering how little supervision they seem to get from ZUN considering how many errors they seem to make.

Only somewhat related but, does anyone else find youkai characters being faced with the concept of marriage to actually be pretty interesting from a character introspection standpoint?

Considering a large number of them have likely lived for centuries, they've probably seen for themselves how marrying for love as a concept is relatively new, historically speaking. Not even mentioning that being a youkai means they've lived outside of society at large, or hidden on the fringes of it at most.

Actually, now that I think about it it wouldn't even make sense for these kinds of marriages to even exist in Gensokyo considering it was sealed off in the 1880s and was pretty remote even before then.

It depends on the type of youkai, I suppose. The more communal sort like the oni, the tengu and the kappa probably have a long tradition of marriage, while others like the fairies would be completely oblivious.

For the former I expect it's not homosexual marriages that are controversial, but those with other youkai. There was that one nice YuuParu doujin the other day about that.

That's another subject I've thought about a fair bit. A lot of the youkai characters probably wouldn't have much reason to give a shit about the idea of getting together with another woman, considering most of a person's notions about that sort of thing are formed by the people around them.

I'd like to see a story where one character pulls the "B-but we're both girls" card and the other brushes it off like "so what we're both youkai anyway why should we care what other people think."

Fairies don't change physically or mentally, the canon is pretty clear about that. Vampires just stay the same physically. Flandre's immaturity is because she was confined alone to a basement for centuries.

Of course you're free to ignore that, but I think the eternal innocence of fairies is an interesting bit of canon that would be a shame to drop just because you want to ship them.

What's interesting about a character who doesn't have the maturity to comprehend half the world around them, and never will? Shipping is only part of it. If you just like fairies for being cute and Cirno for being hilarious in Japanese Flash parodies, then it's fine, but otherwise if you want them to be an engaging part of the world, writing off characters as basically mentally stunted is a lame way to relegate them to second-class status. You haven't unless you speak Japanese and have a time machine. There's an assload of Touhou that never even gets reprinted past individual events, let alone scanned.

Once you've exhausted the common sources you either play the waiting game or make your own (whether it's writefagging/drawfagging or working on translations).

Well Reimu rated on pure power, while Marisa rated based on magic and style of danmaku, so it's not surprising they gave Meiling (a stage 3 boss and a martial artist) a low grade.

Sakuya rated mostly on (potential) usefulness to Remilia, or respect (or in the case of Patchy, she rates her low because she believes Patchy shouldn't have had to fight, and it's her own failure). Giving Meiling an 8 makes sense based on her last line; "her usual perseverance should have been enough". She clearly thinks highly of Meiling's abilities and seems to be speaking as a disappointed superior. Kind of like how she's disappointed in herself for not stopping Reimu/Marisa from getting to Patchy/Remi.

I guess its mostly the "I thought she'd be more useful than the fairies" line that rubs me the wrong way, considering the SDM's fairies are generally painted as being largely useless.

Like I said, Meiling doesn't really have a good track record for canon appearances, to the point I half hope she doesn't show up anymore because I don't see it getting any better.

I mean yeah, but a lot of touhou's humor comes from the characters being dicks and bantering with each other. ZUN's favorite is Reimu, who is tearse and generally unfriendly.

The real problem is that Meiling is strong for who she is and could easily keep most humans, youkai, and intruders out, but the actual people that would tresspass into the SDM (Reimu, Marisa), are just that much stronger. So it just makes for her being a humorous character, especially with the whole "she skips out on work" thing.

Her article in BAiJR is okay, it shows that she has a decent amount of responsibility in the Mansion, but serves the point more that Remilia just likes to tease all her subordinates. It's hard to say if she gets a more raw deal than say, Reisen and Youmu. Although they're stronger, show up more, and get to be playable, they get bullied even harder by Tewi/Eirin and Yuyuko.
