Remember the good old days where we had cyoa and /u/ stories nearly every week? Well they're gone so here's one of the best stories from that age http://anonkun.com/stories/The-Evoker-(-u--Fantasy-CYOA)/f4780fce-e00d-44e4-a97f-9ebbeca466c9

I wish I'd paid more attention to them now.

But they were absolute tripe. That "Mouse" namefag wrote like a prepubescent idiot.

It was kinda shit but I had fun browsing the threads. If I remember correctly there was one about an all female band, I think that one went on hiatus and never returned, shame because I liked that one.
>>
>>2017225
Yeah that one was pretty fun in a lighthearted smut way. I followed DLR when it started but quickly grew sour on it, and it seemed to go pretty damn downhill a while after I stopped reading too.

Wasn't there a 2hu drawquest back then too? I seem to remember a short one...

Kinda miss the CYOAs here but at least they didn't flood the board to the point of backlash I guess. I still have some /u/-related quests on Akun to follow anyway.

>I still have some /u/-related quests on Akun to follow anyway.
How is that place nowadays? I was toying with the idea of writing a yuri CYOA in an alternative 1920/30' Prohibition era setting, primarily based on the sixth episode of Sora No Woto about a bunch of girls rising up in the criminal underworld. Never got around to it, though I still have my notes and I haven't been to that place in a long while.

Honestly it's pretty OK. It feels like the same set of people are in each set of quests without too much over lap.

The monster girl encyclopedia quests all have the same voting base. The smut has their large reader base, while the more story oriented stuff has smaller more consistent bases. I don't bother doing my writing anywhere else because counting votes here is shit and full of doublevoting people.(not that I don't know I haven't a few in my story.)

The community there is pretty supportive most of the time, though I've seen some outright Dick's on a few stories.

As for your story idea, fucking do it. Sounds fun, and as a bonus I like that time period even if it's almost as romanticized as cowboys.

>>

Live right now and probably one of the best stories in akun.

GE has some of the best character development I've seen on akun. It has a compelling story and you really end up rooting for saint likenda, even when she should really just go on a murder spree.
It's better than some shit I've read that's been published in actual dead tree format.

I don't LIKE the way akun Works, but the alternatives are few. I also dislike the clause that akun dev has that says anything you write on akun is his if you post it there. Not that it would hold up if anyone actually got their shit published, which I bet ST or FACE could do if they found the right people.
>>
>>2018207
Since the other guy didn't actually answer the question: it's 100% /u/. The story is basically 100% about fantasy-world Magical Girls interacting with each-other so there's not a ton of space for major male characters at all, certainly none that would threaten relationships.

Be warned that the first chapter has some...rough voting though. Basically anons treating it like a smut/romance-quest and getting slapped on the wrist for it by other characters repeatedly. Improves by chapter 2.

Don't know what either of you are talking about. If you have a name to go with it, or at least a basic summary of some of the events that occurred in it maybe someone knows how you can find it, or has it to share.

So how active is Anonkun? I've actually recently come up with an idea for a possible yuri CYOA and thought I might pitch it to /u/.

Basically, it's the premise of many het harem manga/games. A random down-of-their luck person learns that they're the heir to some big family, start living in a huge mansion and are surrounded my tons of women who want to have their child.

The catch: Every single male heir has been killed, leaving the only remaining descendant a broke college girl who her father (the head of the family) had with a mistress and had quietly swept under the rug.

The mansion is there, as are the horde of ladies who have taken up residence (many of whom weren't expecting a woman to show up but some of whom are quick to adapt), but there are bigger issues to worry about. The conspirators have realized there are still loose ends to tie up, and our heroine soon receives a message from a mysterious benefactor that an assassin might even be lurking amidst the would-be harem.

The unwitting heroine must carefully chose her allies from the suitors, some of whom have surprising backgrounds, unravel the mystery behind her family, and possibly find love, all while evading attempts on her life.

So, what do /u/ think?
>>
>>2021052
It sounds like an okay premise, but the fact that most (all?) of the potential pairings are a bunch of gold-diggers who expected to marry a guy means I can't really get behind it.
>>
>>2021052
Like the ather anon, I don't wanna read something where all the routes are women who were ready to bear a child with a male. I don't care that they're all gold diggers though, as long as each have an interesting motive/reason beyond simply wanting to swim in dollars.

The second thing is the setting. I initially thought this would be historical due to the heavy patriarchy (killing all male heirs, unexpected heiress), but then she turns out to be a college girl, which means this is in modern time. This clasing is jarring, since even in sexist countries like Japan/Korea/China/etc, a close heiress is still much preferred than a distant male heir (bastard daughter > any nephew or brother). Is this set in the Middle East or Africa?
>>
>>2021052
Anonkun activity overall is quite good. But it varies a LOT from story to story. We're talking 60 - 80 people all shitting up chat vs 3 people of which maybe one person will actually say anything. Neither is frankly preferable but obviously you want enough readers to actually keep things active at the very least, I tend to enjoy the 20 - 30 player quests the most.

Important things to get a lot of readers beyond the obvious one in quality of writing and premise, is simply how much writan you do. Also writing in sessions seems to draw more people than sporadic single updates, regardless of the overall number of words you put out per week or what have you. So frequent long writing sessions > occasional writing sessions > frequent single updates > updates maybe once or twice a week (this will probably mean noplayers). Obviously most writers don't have the stamina for the first one but there are plenty of popular quests that update more rarely too.
>>
>>2021126
>Also writing in sessions seems to draw more people than sporadic single updates
Well, that's a bummer considering I have an actual job and not one of those you can do whatever the hell you want for almost the entirety of the 8 hours type. How long does an average session last?
>>
>>2021135
Some people do 2-5 3 hour sessions, some do 15 hour sessions. It depends. The question is how fast you write really, cause people care less how long you're running and more your output while running. If you can get out 4 - 5 updates of decent size (at least 3 - 4 paragraphs) that's okay, whether it takes you 2 hours or 12.

You can still get readers without sessions but I'm not gonna sugar-coat it; very few quests that don't do sessions seem to get much activity at all. They can get a lot of READERS but the format of an update here and there generally doesn't prompt discussion much at all and you risk sitting with 30 votes and 5 posts in chat since the last update.
>>
>>2021052
Not active enough. Tbh, most questers have moved to SpaceBattles by now.
>>
>>2021281
That's mean anon, don't bully the innocent question-askers.
>>
>>2021107
>as long as each have an interesting motive/reason beyond simply wanting to swim in dollars.
Yeah, some would there because they don't have any other choice, others are there because they have a hidden agenda.

>>2021107
>The second thing is the setting. I initially thought this would be historical due to the heavy patriarchy
Geez, I got the exact same reaction for a different idea in the idea thread. I was thinking of setting it in Japan, and it's not even like you're the heir to a throne, just some well-off family business. The premise would be lampshading and parodying works like those of Kuon Michiyoshi, Tosh, Tachibana Omina, etc.
>>
>>2021052
Would there be some milfs/cougars/their equivalent in the horde of ladies?
>>
>>2017141
Who the fuck leaves their vibrators out in the open like that?
>>
>>2021397
>it's not even like you're the heir to the throne
Ironically enough, if you're writing about throne inheritance instead of a business, then your setting would be perfect. This is because Japan still doesn't allow women to become its supreme monarch, while female heirs for huge business are not rare.

You still don't seem to understand why your setting is jarring. Let me repeat it again: it causes suspension of disbelief. The MC is the DAUGHTER of the head of the family. Despite being a bastard and a girl, this MC stands above any of her male cousins and uncles in the inheritance line. The only ones she'd lose to are her half-brothers.

How to fix, pick your poison:
- Change the inheritance from business to the Japanese throne
- Change the setting from modern Japan to modern Middle East or Africa
- Change the assassinated people from "all male heirs" to "all the sons of the family head."
- Change this into a historical setting.
- Change the MC's status as the bastard daughter of the family head to a distant bastard niece/granddaughter instead. Now she's officially lower than any of her brothers/cousins/uncles.
>>
>>2021688
I wrote up a short profile for the protagonist. Her personality/past history is going to be mostly a blank slate to be filled in by the audience, but hopefully this will clear up some things. What I had meant from the beginning was #3.

I'll start working on profiles for the bachelorettes, of which there will be probably be between 10-15, as well as the drafting the layout of the setting.

---

Protagonist: Fujishima Nari
The only daughter of Fujishima Daisuke, former head of the Fujishima zaibutsu and the last remaining heir after her three older brothers were killed under mysterious circumstances. Her mother was one of Fujishima Daisuke’s mistresses – a South Korean woman whose name Nari does not even know. As soon as she was old enough, Nari was shipped off to a boarding school for girls, and has been living on her own with only the bare minimum of support from her father, whose face she only knows from his appearances on television. She is called back home shortly after the death of her father and brothers to find a horde of bachelorettes who were supposed to be participating in a reality show to find a wife for Takeshi (her late playboy oldest brother) as well as a warning that she may have just been put into the crosshairs of a plot to destroy the Fujishima family.
Her name means “lily” in Korean and is the only memento she has from her mother
>>
>>2021717
The setting is better now. Though it doesn't really make sense why the MC was separated from her mother, and at the same time barely being supported by her father.

It makes more sense if her mother is dead/missing, thus her dad had to grudgingly provide for her, or let her grow up poor in an orphanage.
>>
>>2021147
Thanks for clearing that up. I thought that something like a 24hour period in between updates would have been preferable, that way the entire readership has time to catch up and vote, and not be excluded just because their timezones don't add up.

Are there any other viable platforms for a /u/ quest/CYOA?
>>
>>2021796
>Are there any other viable platforms for a /u/ quest/CYOA?

In the past there were just threads on /u/, but it was up to the creator to count votes and there was no way to prevent one person to easily post multiple votes.

I actually have a question of my own for the thread. How much freedom does the audience for these generally expect?

I followed the Alice story for a while back then and for one thing, they abused the custom decision option by using the internet. There was also a famous instance where the author misinterpreted one such decision and took the story into a direction no one wanted. Generally, I'm open to custom options so long as there's a way for the author to veto them if they're too OOC, impossible, or just trolling.
>>
>>2021810
>In the past there were just threads on /u/
Is that still allowed? I was under the impression that currently ALL quests must go to /tg/ regardless of the subject matter.
>>
>>2021813
Yeah, well as long as it doesn't flood the board. There was an attempted one I think a month or so back called Knight Quest. It unfortunately lost traction almost immediately.
>>
>>2021796
There are different perspectives on that, many players do indeed prefer a day or so between updates so everyone has a chance to vote. Quests with update schedules like that are still well-liked and all. But even Evoker/Ember's Edge which are the most popular stories with that kinda update schedule I know of don't honestly get much discussion going on. Ember does get an okay amount of activity overall, but nothing compared to the big session-based quests - and I'd say its biggest issue so far is the lack of creativity and discussion of votes in general. Kinda feels like the players are happy to sit on rails and let things play out, and it kinda makes the chat feel a bit sterile and like it's not invested in what's happening, even though I'm sure people are. But maybe it's as much to do with storyteller's way of writing and setting up votes and you'd have better luck.

>>2021813
Who knows. /u/ questing basically died down/migrated to Akun of its own volition, though there were some complaints I don't think mods cracked down on it. Then after that, the quest crackdown on /a/ and /v/ and /d/ and such started. Mods might allow it but trying would certainly mean risking having your thread suddenly autosaged or locked in the middle of the whole thing.
>>
>>2021902
>Mods might allow it but trying would certainly mean risking having your thread suddenly autosaged or locked in the middle of the whole thing.
Might try something short term first to test the waters. I'm not a native English speaker, so my prose might not be up to par and garner enough interest to be worthwhile anyway. It's better to crash and burn on your test project than your magnum opus.
>>
>>2021915
That's true, of course. Good luck with it.
>>
>>2019555
All /u/ guys need to Read this and simultaneously feel bad this wasn't born on /u/
>>
>>2021991
Thanks. I'm taking the fact that this thread hasn't been nuked as a good omen that the mods might just overlook 1 or 2 quests/CYOAs.

Which reminds me, I'd like a little input from /u/ in regards to the test run. I have two very vague general ideas and I wonder if there is a preference towards either one of them before I start fleshing things out and invest my time in them.

The first one is a SoL/adventure quest CATastrophe style (a /tg/ concocted setting, think Aria meets YKK only with cat/dog/fox/etc-girls, see pic for reference). A group of small adventurers getting into all kinds of wacky hijinks while discovering the origins of their people and meeting that special someone in their travels.

The second one would be an old school science fiction one, reminiscent of how people envisioned the future in the 70/80s. The protagonist, a young technician on a space station, gets caught up in a conspiracy that soon has her running for her life. Not sure who to trust, her interactions with the rest of the staff will plagued by distrust.
>>
>>2025344
For a test run, the former sounds more appropriate to me. Easier to keep short-ish, probably more general appeal on /u/, seems less demanding writing-wise. Main drawback is, it's easier to get motivation and escape writer's block if you have the general direction of your story mapped out (even in quest form) and that seems like it'd be tougher to do with a more SoL-focused quest.
